The limit cycle oscillations (LCOs) exhibited by long-span suspension bridges in post-flutter condition are investigated. A parametric dynamic model of prestressed long-span suspension bridges is coupled with a nonlinear quasi-steady aerodynamic formulation to obtain the governing aeroelastic partial differential equations adopted herewith. By employing the Faedo–Galerkin method, the aeroelastic nonlinear equations are reduced to their state-space ordinary differential form. Convergence analysis for the reduction process is first carried out and time-domain simulations are performed to investigate LCOs while continuation tools are employed to path follow the post-critical LCOs. A supercritical Hopf bifurcation behavior, confirmed by a stable LCO, is found past the critical flutter condition. The analysis shows that the LCO amplitude increases with the wind speed up to a secondary critical speed where it terminates with a fold bifurcation. The stability of the LCOs within the range bracketed by the Hopf and fold bifurcations is evaluated by performing parametric analyses regarding the main design parameters that can be affected by uncertainties, primarily the structural damping and the initial wind angle of attack.

A linearized parametric continuum model of a long-span suspension bridge is coupled with a nonlinear quasi-steady aerodynamic model giving the aeroelastic partial differential equations of motion reduced to the state-space ordinary differential form by adopting the Galerkin method. Numerical time-domain simulations are performed to investigate the limit cycle oscillations occurring in the range of post-flutter wind speeds. Continuation tools are thus employed to path follow the limit cycles past the flutter speed where the Hopf bifurcation occurs. The stable post-flutter behavior, which can significantly affect the bridge by fatigue, terminate at a fold bifurcation. This result represents an important assessment of the conducted aeroelastic investigations. The stability range of the limit cycle oscillations is evaluated by carrying out sensitivity analyses with respect to the main design parameters, such as the structural damping and the initial wind angle of attack.

In this paper, a novel central buckle composed of buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) is developed for long-span suspension bridges, and its preliminary design procedure is presented. Seismic performance of suspension bridges equipped with BRB central buckles is investigated and compared with those with conventional central buckles (e.g. rigid or flexible central buckles). Furthermore, the effect of BRB yield force, as well as the effectiveness of BRB central buckles combined with viscous dampers, is evaluated using parametric analyses. The results indicate that the BRB central buckle is more effective than other central buckles in reducing both the longitudinal girder displacements and force demands on towers during an earthquake. Furthermore, the combination of BRB central buckles and viscous dampers is a superior option for mitigating the seismic response of long-span suspension bridges.

The cable tower is the bearing component of long-span suspension bridges, and its structure is very high and bear large force, which determines the stability and is the key of safety control. As for the height of the main tower of a long-span suspension bridge up to 195.3 m, the finite element software ANSYS is used to establish a three-dimensional finite element model (FEM), and the effects of geometric nonlinearity and material nonlinearity on the stability of the main tower are analyzed. The calculation results show that geometrical nonlinearity and material defects have significant influence on the main tower stability, and the nonlinear stability should be considered under wind load in the design calculation.

The flexibility and low damping of the long span suspended cables in suspension bridges makes them prone to vibrations due to wind and moving loads which affect the dynamic responses of the suspended cables and the bridge deck. This paper investigates the control of vibrations of a suspension bridge due to a vertical load moving on the bridge deck with a constant speed. A vertical cable between the bridge deck and the suspended cables is used to install a hydraulic actuator able to generate an active control force on the bridge deck. Two control schemes are proposed to generate the control force needed to reduce the vertical vibrations in the suspended cables and in the bridge deck. The proposed controllers, whose design is based on Lyapunov theory, guarantee the asymptotic stability of the system. The MATLAB software is used to simulate the performance of the controlled system. The simulation results indicate that the proposed controllers work well. In addition, the performance of the system with the proposed controllers is compared to the performance of the system controlled with a velocity feedback controller.

Abstract Inspired by gecko’s adhesive feet, a wheeled wall climbing robot is designed in this paper with the synchronized gears and belt system acting as the wheels by considering both motion efficiency and adhesive capability. Adhesion of wheels is obtained by the bio-inspired adhesive material wrapping on the outer surface of wheels. A ducted fan mounted on the back of the robot supplies thrust force for the adhesive material to generate normal and shear adhesion force whilemoving on vertical surfaces. Experimental verification of robot climbing on vertical flat surface was carried out. The stability and the effect of structure design parameters were analyzed.

AbstractA compact ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna is presented in this paper with a partial ground plane on epoxy woven glass material. The study is discussed to comprehend the effects of various design parameters with explicit parametric analyses. The overall antenna dimension is 0.22×0.26×0.016 λ. A prototype is made on epoxide woven glass fabric dielectric material of 1.6 mm thickness. The measured results point out that the reported antenna belongs to a wide bandwidth comprehending from 3 GHz to more than 11 GHz with VSWR<2. It has a peak gain of 5.52 dBi, where 3.98 dBi is the average gain. Nearly omnidirectional radiation patterns are observed within the operating frequency bands. A good term exists between simulation and measurement results, which lead the reported antenna to be an appropriate candidate for UWB applications.
