Effect of Reactor Thickness on Gas-Solid Flow and Heat Transfer of Thin Rectangular Fluidized Bed Reactors for CO2 Capture

Abstract Thermal design of dual circulating fluidized bed reactors for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture was carried out. To handle large heat duties for regeneration, a thin rectangular reactor was proposed. For feasible thermal design, the effect of varying reactor thickness on the gas-solid flow and heat transfer of the thin rectangular fluidized bed was investigated. Reactor thickness of 10, 30, and 60 mm was tested. Numerical simulations were conducted to analyze the pressure difference, solid particle hold-up distribution, particle velocity, granular temperature, and heat transfer in detail. According to our results, when the reactor is between 10 mm and 30 mm thick, a large solid hold-up occurs adjacent to the narrow wall. This causes a large pressure difference due to the wall effect. Furthermore, the particle velocities were analyzed to evaluate that there is the two-dimensional (2D) particle mixing behaviors. On the other hand, in the case of reactors with a thickness of 60 mm, tuning flows occur adjacent to the narrow wall. This reduced the pressure difference and the three-dimensional (3D) particle mixing behaviors. This difference in particle behavior affected heat transfer. In the case of reactor thicknesses between 10 mm and 30 mm, the heat transfer increased with the reactor thickness. In particular, the heat transfer at the narrow wall of the reactor with a thickness of 10 mm was extremely low due to the low particle mixing. On the other hand, there was more heat transfer with a thickness at the 60 mm wall, despite the low solid hold-up.

In this work three important aromatic transformations, namely: toluene disproportionation, toluene methylation and m-xylene isomerization, were investigated in a riser simulator which closely mimics the operation of commercial fluidized bed reactors. The transformations were studied over a ZSM-5 based catalyst with medium acidity of 0.23 mmol/g and a series of Y zeolites of acidities between 0.55 and 0.03 mmol/g. For pure toluene feed, it was observed that conversion over the ZSM-5 based catalyst and the weakly acidic Y zeolite (USY-1) was very low. However, with the highly acidic Y zeolite (H-Y), significant toluene conversion was observed with paring reaction more prominent than disproportionation. On the other hand, when toluene was alkylated with methanol, higher toluene conversions were achieved over both the ZSM-5 based and the weakly acidic USY-1 catalysts as compared to when pure toluene feed was used. In addition, p-xylene/o-xylene (P/O) ratios higher than the equilibrium values were obtained in the reaction product over both catalysts. Finally, for m-xylene isomerization it was found that m-xylene conversion increased initially as the acidity of the catalyst increased up to 0.1 mmol/g beyond which any further increase in acidity resulted in a slight decrease in the m-xylene conversion.

In general, rheological properties of gelled fuels change dramatically when temperature changes. In this work, we investigate flow and heat transfer of water-gel in a straight pipe and a tapered injector for non-isothermal conditions, which mimic the situations when gelled fuels are used in propulsion systems. The gel-fluid is modeled as a non-Newtonian fluid, where the viscosity depends on the shear rate and the temperature; a correlation fitted with experimental data is used. For the fully developed flow in a straight pipe with heating, the mean apparent viscosity at the cross section when the temperature is high is only 44% of the case with low temperature; this indicates that it is feasible to control the viscosity of gel fuel by proper thermal design of pipes. For the flow in the typical tapered injector, larger temperature gradients along the radial direction results in a more obvious plug flow; that is, when the fuel is heated the viscosity near the wall is significantly reduced, but the effect is not obvious in the area far away from the wall. Therefore, for the case of the tapered injector, as the temperature of the heating wall increases, the mean apparent viscosity at the outlet decreases first and increases then due to the high viscosity plug formed near the channel center, which encourages further proper design of the injector in future. Furthermore, the layer of low viscosity near the walls plays a role similar to lubrication, thus the supply pressure of the transport system is significantly reduced; the pressure drop for high temperature is only 62% of that of low temperature. It should be noticed that for a propellent system the heating source is almost free; therefore, by introducing a proper thermal design of the transport system, the viscosity of the gelled fuel can be greatly reduced, thus reducing the power input to the supply pressure at a lower cost.

This paper presents a numerical simulation of composite cooling on a first stage vane of a gas turbine, in which gas by fixed composition mixture is adopted. To investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics, two internal chambers which contain multiple arrays of impingement holes are arranged in the vane, several arrays of pin-fins are arranged in the trailing edge region, and a few arrays of film cooling holes are arranged on the vane surfaces to form the cooling film. The coolant enters through the shroud inlet, and then divided into two parts. One part is transferred into the chamber in the leading edge region, and then after impinging on the target surfaces, it proceeds further to go through the film cooling holes distributed on the vane surface, while the other part enters into the second chamber immediately and then exits to the mainstream in two ways to effectively cool the other sections of the vane. In this study, five different coolant flow rates and six different inlet pressure ratios were investigated. All the cases were performed with the same domain grids and same boundary conditions. It can be concluded that for the internal surfaces, the heat transfer coefficient changes gradually with the coolant flow rate and the inlet total pressure ratio, while for the external surfaces, the average cooling effectiveness increases with the increase of coolant mass flow rates while decreases with the increase of the inlet stagnation pressure ratios within the study range.

In the present work, a compact modeling method based on a volume-averaging technique is presented. Its application to an analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer in straight fin heat sinks is then analyzed. In this study, the straight fin heat sink is modeled as a porous medium through which fluid flows. The volume-averaged momentum and energy equations for developing flow in these heat sinks are obtained using the local volume-averaging method. The permeability and the interstitial heat transfer coefficient required to solve these equations are determined analytically from forced convective flow between infinite parallel plates. To validate the compact model proposed in this paper, three aluminum straight fin heat sinks having a base size of 101.43mm×101.43mm are tested with an inlet velocity ranging from 0.5 m/s to 2 m/s. In the experimental investigation, the heat sink is heated uniformly at the bottom. The resulting pressure drop across the heat sink and the temperature distribution at its bottom are then measured and are compared with those obtained through the porous medium approach. Upon comparison, the porous medium approach is shown to accurately predict the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of straight fin heat sinks. In addition, evidence indicates that the entrance effect should be considered in the thermal design of heat sinks when Re Dh/L>∼O10.

The focus of this research is to predict the flow and heat transfer in a rotating two-pass duct geometry with staggered ribs using Large-Eddy Simulations (LES). The geometry consists of a U-Bend with 17 ribs in each pass. The ribs are staggered with an e/Dh = 0.1 and P/e = 10. LES is performed at a Reynolds number of 100,000, a rotation number of 0.2 and buoyancy parameters (Bo) of 0.5 and 1.0. The effects of Coriolis forces and centrifugal buoyancy are isolated and studied individually. In all cases it is found that increasing Bo from 0.5 to 1.0 at Ro = 0.2 has little impact on heat transfer. It is found that in the first pass, the heat transfer is quite receptive to Coriolis forces which augment and attenuate heat transfer at the trailing and leading walls, respectively. Centrifugal buoyancy, on the other hand has a bigger effect in augmenting heat transfer at the trailing wall than in attenuating heat transfer at the leading wall. On contrary, it aids heat transfer in the second half of the first pass at the leading wall by energizing the flow near the wall. The heat transfer in the second pass is dominated by the highly turbulent flow exiting the bend. Coriolis forces have no impact on the augmentation of heat transfer on the leading wall till the second half of the passage whereas it attenuates heat transfer at the trailing wall as soon as the flow exits the bend. Contrary to phenomenological arguments, inclusion of centrifugal buoyancy augments heat transfer over Coriolis forces alone on both the leading and trailing walls of the second pass.

In this paper we have studied the streamfunction-vorticity formulation can be advantageously used to analyse steady as well as unsteady incompressible flow and heat transfer problems, since it allows the elimination of pressure from the governing equations and automatically satisfies the continuity constraint. On the other hand, the specification of boundary conditions for the streamfunction-vorticity is not easy and a poor evaluation of these conditions may lead to serious difficulties in obtaining a converged solution. The main issue addressed in this paper is the specification in the boundary conditions in the context of finite element of discretization, but approach utilized can be easily extended to finite volume computations.

LES calculations are conducted for flow in a channel with dimples and protrusions on opposite walls with both surfaces heated at three Reynolds numbers, ReH = 220, 940, and 9300 ranging from laminar, weakly turbulent to fully turbulent, respectively. Turbulence generated by the separated shear layer in the dimple and along the downstream rim of the dimple is primarily responsible for heat transfer augmentation on the dimple surface. On the other hand, augmentation on the protrusion surface is mostly driven by flow impingement and flow acceleration between protrusions, while the turbulence generated in the wake has a secondary effect. Heat transfer augmentation ratios of 0.99 at ReH = 220, 2.9 at ReH = 940, and 2.5 at ReH = 9300 are obtained. Both skin friction and form losses contribute to pressure drop in the channel, with form losses increasing from 45% to 80% with an increase in the Reynolds number. Friction coefficient augmentation ratios of 1.67, 4.82 and 6.37 are obtained at ReH = 220, 940, and 9300, respectively. Based on the geometry studied, it is found that dimples and protrusions may not be viable heat transfer augmentation surfaces when the flow is steady and laminar.
