Abstract A new concept on the heredity and evolution of designs was proposed and an optimum design method based on the concept was developed newly by one of the authors. Several kinds of needs for designs may exist and users of some products are not satisfied with the functions of the products but also with their sensuous beauties or impressions of shapes and materials. To consider such sensous quality of the products was called “Kansei designs” in Japan and have become of interest and important lately (Nagamachi, 1989). In this study we introduce the same concept on heredity and evolution of designs as in the previous reports shown in Fig.1 (Yamakawa, 1994) and present a general design method to consider the Kansei design into ordinary, design process by making use of both SD (Semantic Differential) and the Genetic Algorithms. In order to support designer’s impressions, we also consider to take for other features Kansei estimation, which is similar to the original feature and easier to take “Kansei”, into account and developed an interface system which can show the transition of feature during GA process. Front view designs of a car are taken as simple numerical examples and the effectiveness of the proposed method is examined.

Abstract Multidisciplinary optimum designs have been of strong interest lately in many fields. A unified multidisciplinary optimum design method by utilizing the genetic algorithms is presented in this study. The design process is modeled there by a distributed hierarchical system to simulate ordinary design processes. Each level is optimized by genetic algorithms somewhat independently but some information is transmitted to the upper or the lower level. Engineering analysis can also be involved in a certain level. The proposed method is then applied to simple examples of preliminary designs of cars and numerical results show the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract This paper describes the construction of an information flow that combines parametric modelling and genetic algorithms to optimise both the total weight of a structured steel roof and the shape of its surface to maximise the generation potential of photovoltaic energy. Through the systematisation of a design process using genetic algorithms integrated with generative design as an architectural design method, architects can work with problem parameterisation, going one step further than the mere formal proposition of solutions. As a result, we present a process in which there is a dialogical relationship between the architect and project in a continuous flow of information in the initial steps of the design process, guided by predefined optimisation objectives. Therefore, it is relevant to note that the designer accepts a reduced creative control over the final shape in favor of control over the core principles that constitute the optimisation algorithms. An approach that involved the designer in a process of post computational processing evaluations is also highlighted, giving him better support to discuss and analyze the design options.

Abstract A structure, whose characteristics are less modified by any changes of external forces, boundary conditions and productive errors, has advantages for its practical use. This character is called robustness. In the consecutive study (Yamakawa and Miyashita, 1991), the authors studied the structural design with robustness and proposed a new structural concept called “Robust Structure.” Robust structural design is more useful when the structures are designed in the upper flow of the design process than in the lower flow. Robust structures can be designed by minimizing the sensitivities of the reference function relative to the variable parameters. However, the sensitivities provide only the local information even when their values are evaluated. Therefore, it is not clarified whether robust structure designed by the sensitivities has wide robustness or not. To conquer this problem, this paper shows robust structural design method using the fuzzy sets. In this method, the variable parameters are shown with fuzzy sets and then obtain the wide robustness. It is also pointed out that robust structural design using sensitivities can design wide robust structure in certain cases. Because robust structural design using fuzzy sets needs a lot of numerical iterations, it is important to figure out the effective design method of wide robust structures. In this paper, an idea is proposed how to design wide robust structures. The numerical examples designed by two different methods using sensitivities and fuzzy sets are shown. Further more, the proposed idea is discussed with these examples.

This project is to validate the preliminary result of rapid prototyping (RP)-based transtibial socket that was reinforced by wrapping a layer of unsaturated polyester resin. By employing contemporary technologies including a scanner, computer-aided engineering systems, a rapid prototyping machine, together with the expertise of a prosthetist, RP-based prosthetic sockets with a comfortable fit to volunteer amputees can be fabricated. However, the expensive cost and complex procedure of using current commercial scanners and CAD systems will be barriers experienced by clinical professionals. As the existing service bureau infrastructure and cheaper RP technology are easily accessed, fabrication and technology cost barriers will be reduced. The remaining problems include the availability of easily-used CAD systems for designing prosthetic sockets, simple scanner and stump duplicating tool. This study therefore focuses on the integration of simplified systems including a vacuum forming tool, compact scanner and an interface system for designing prosthetic sockets. Although the type of PTB (patella tendon bearing) transtibial socket is widely adopted in plaster-based manual process, TSB (total surface bearing) sockets are more acceptable by amputees. Since the concept of TSB socket should obtain the stump mold of an amputee under appropriate pressure by using a specific stump forming tool, editing complex surfaces can be avoided when using a TSB-based stump model to design a socket. The quality of socket fit is expected to improve by a simplified design process in which an interface system based on grid-editing algorithms is utilized. In addition, cheaper RP technology, such as 3-D printing or droplet binding process, can be alternative means to fabricate RP-based prosthetic sockets. By combining TSB stump mold, simplified design process and a cheaper RP machine, this study proposes a simplified integrating system to manufacture RP stump mold. Using this RP stump mold together with the traditional lamination method of infiltrating resin into cotton layers, the RP-based transtibial sockets will then be fabricated easily. The expected result will demonstrate the feasibility of employing cheaper emerging technologies to assist an unskilled prosthetist who will be able to produce good quality of prosthetic socket.

This article focuses on the use of genetic algorithms in developing an efficient optimum design method for tilting pad bearings. The approach optimizes based on minimum film thickness, power loss, maximum film temperature, and a global objective. Results for a five tilting-pad preloaded bearing are presented to provide a comparison with more traditional optimum design methods such as the gradient-based global criterion method, and also to provide insight into the potential of genetic algorithms in the design of rotor bearings. Genetic algorithms are efficient search techniques based on the idea of natural selection and genetics. These robust methods have gained recognition as general problem solving techniques in many applications.

Waste generated from industries and from various places around us not only contains rubber or plastics but contains lot many harmful pollutants whichare hazardous if disposed continuously in open and leftto degrade in our environment. Our project aims to study properties of different materials which may help in utilising the waste as well as improve the quality of roads and make them efficient, stable, durable and long lasting. Some of the materials that we have studied and considered to be tested in the partial replacement of bitumen are PMB and CRMB.

The article discusses methods for optimizing the design of the Neutron Converter research plant design with parameters that are most suitable for a particular consumer. 38 similar plant structures with different materials and sources were calculated, on the basis of which the most optimal options were found. As part of the interaction between OKBM Afrikantov JSC and the Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University named after R. E. Alekseev, the Neutron Converter research plant was designed and assembled. The universal neutron converter is a device for converting a stream of fast neutrons emitted by isotopic sources into a "standardized" value of flux density with known parameters in the volume of the central part of the product, which is the working part of the universal neutron converter. To supply neutron converters to other customer organizations (universities, research organizations and collective centers), it is necessary to take into account the experience of operating an existing facility, as well as rationalize the design process of each specific instance in accordance with the requirements of the customer.
