In recent years, aesthetic design is given increasing importance in the development of products industry with the growing maturity of product functions. The designer is required to reflect consumer needs in the aesthetic design while giving consideration to use and function. Effective techniques enabling design creation based on consumer preference and needs are indispensable. This study thus aims to construct a design support system which can identify various consumer needs and provide ideas to the designer at an early stage in the design process. In the identification of the consumer preferences, it is necessary to also expose vague consumer preferences. The design support system thus also aims to reduce burden on the consumers during consumer survey and expose consumer preference by using the genetic algorithm (a type of Interactive Evolutionary Computing) for the extraction of consumer preference. The authors also propose the use of rough sets and decision rules for analyzing the acquired consumer preference data specifically and effectively, and formulate consumer preference rules. Furthermore, the constructed system is able to generate multiple design solutions automatically by reflecting the consumer preference rules in design solutions created by the designer, and display the generated solutions to the designer.

Abstract It is very important for designers, engineers, and even researchers to quickly and responsively get design data whenever and anywhere as needed. Internet is an enabling technology to make this be becoming a reality. In last few years, many improvements have been made in the information sharing through the WWW (World Wide Web). But in the CAD/CAM area it is still at an early stage. The aim of this paper is to explore various aspects of how to implement a Web-based engineering design support system which would allow the simulation of mechanical assemblies with parametric facilities, through the example of design of rolling bearings. The paper concludes with a discussion on the potential and applications of the approach and the system proposed.

Abstract To increase the transmission efficiency of incoming and outgoing light on the side of a transparent resin light guide, such as an acrylic plate, we created a machined surface that does not become cloudy and transmits visible light well by cutting it with a single crystal diamond tool. When light is guided to this mirror-finished acrylic plate using an LED light source, its uneven brightness or illuminance distribution may be noticeable, depending on the application. To suppress the uneven distribution, attempts have made the luminance distribution uniform by a decorative cut on the acrylic plates for a fine pattern shape. Our research is developing a light environment design support system using an acrylic light-guiding plate with a decorative cut surface. This system consists of a rapid decoration pattern design technique with optical simulation, a decorative cutting technique to satisfy the demanded optical characteristics, and a technique to maintain machining quality. We implemented decorative cutting tests for various stripe patterns by adjusting the cutting conditions for the acrylic plates. Estimation of the decorative shapes was based on the shape of the tool cutting edge and its trajectory. We controlled the decoration shape and dimensions. The tendency of luminance distributions estimated by optical simulation were corresponded with the actual distributions.
