System Level Dynamic Modeling Framework Being Developed at Clemson University’s Wind Turbine Drivetrain Testing Facility

This paper describes the system level, dynamic modeling and simulation strategy being developed at the Wind Turbine Drivetrain Testing Facility (WTDTF) at Clemson University’s Restoration Institute in North Charleston, SC, USA. An extensible framework that allows various workflows has been constructed and used to conduct preliminary analysis of one of the facility’s test benches. The framework dictates that component and subsystem models be developed according to a list of identified needs and modeled in software best suited for the particular task. Models are then integrated according to the desired execution target. This approach allows for compartmentalized model development which is well suited for collaborative work. The framework has been applied to one of the test benches and has allowed researches to begin characterizing its behavior in the time and frequency domain.

The single-column mode (SCM) of the ICON (ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic) modeling framework is presented. The primary purpose of the ICON SCM is to use it as a tool for research, model evaluation and development. Thanks to the simplified geometry of the ICON SCM, various aspects of the ICON model, in particular the model physics, can be studied in a well-controlled environment. Additionally, the ICON SCM has a reduced computational cost and a low data storage demand. The ICON SCM can be utilized for idealized cases—several well-established cases are already included—or for semi-realistic cases based on analyses or model forecasts. As the case setup is defined by a single NetCDF file, new cases can be prepared easily by the modification of this file. We demonstrate the usage of the ICON SCM for different idealized cases such as shallow convection, stratocumulus clouds, and radiative transfer. Additionally, the ICON SCM is tested for a semi-realistic case together with an equivalent three-dimensional setup and the large eddy simulation mode of ICON. Such consistent comparisons across the hierarchy of ICON configurations are very helpful for model development. The ICON SCM will be implemented into the operational ICON model and will serve as an additional tool for advancing the development of the ICON model.

While turbine engine Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) accumulated significant experience in the application of probabilistic methods (PM) and uncertainty quantification (UQ) methods to specific technical disciplines and engine components, experience with system-level PM applications has been limited. To demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of an integrated PM-based system, a numerical case study has been developed around the Honeywell turbine engine application. The case study uses experimental observations of engine performance such as horsepower and fuel flow from a population of engines. Due to manufacturing variability, there are unit-to-unit and supplier-to-supplier variations in compressor blade geometry. Blade inspection data are available for the characterization of these geometric variations, and CFD analysis can be linked to the engine performance model, so that the effect of blade geometry variation on system-level performance characteristics can be quantified. Other elements of the case study included the use of engine performance and blade geometry data to perform Bayesian updating of the model inputs, such as efficiency adders and turbine tip clearances. A probabilistic engine performance model was developed, system-level sensitivity analysis performed, and the predicted distribution of engine performance metrics was calibrated against the observed distributions. This paper describes the model development approach and key simulation results. The benefits of using PM and UQ methods in the system-level framework are discussed. This case study was developed under Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) funding which is gratefully acknowledged.

Abstract This paper aims to analyze the feasibility of establishing a dynamic drivetrain model from condition monitoring measurements. In this study SCADA data and further sensor data is analyzed from a 1.5MW wind turbine, provided by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. A multibody model of the drivetrain is made and simulation based sensors are placed on bearings to look at the possibility to obtain geometrical and modal properties from simulation based vibration sensors. Results show that the axial proxy sensor did not provide any usable system information due to its application purpose. SCADA data did not meet the Nyquist frequency and cannot be used to determine geometrical or modal properties. Strain gauges on the shaft can provide the shaft rotational frequency, while torque and angular displacement sensors can provide the torsional eigenfrequency of the system. Simulation based vibration sensors are able to capture gear mesh frequencies, harmonics, sideband frequencies and shaft rotational frequencies.

Offshore wind turbines are becoming increasingly popular due to their higher wind energy harnessing capabilities and lower visual pollution. Researchers around the globe have been reporting significant scientific advancements in offshore wind turbines technology, addressing key issues, such as aerodynamic characteristics of turbine blades, dynamic response of the turbine, structural integrity of the turbine foundation, design of the mooring cables, ground scouring and cost modelling for commercial viability. These investigations range from component-level design and analysis to system-level response and optimization using a multitude of analytical, empirical and numerical techniques. With such wide-ranging studies available in the public domain, there is a need to carry out an extensive yet critical literature review on the recent advancements in offshore wind turbine technology. Offshore wind turbine blades’ aerodynamics and the structural integrity of offshore wind turbines are of particular importance, which can lead towards system’s optimal design and operation, leading to reduced maintenance costs. Thus, in this study, our focus is to highlight key knowledge gaps in the scientific investigations on offshore wind turbines’ aerodynamic and structural response. It is envisaged that this study will pave the way for future concentrated efforts in better understanding the complex behavior of these machines.

Brake-induced vibration often involves strong coupling with the aircraft structure, thereby necessitating a system level understanding. However, testing a full system is both costly and impossible until late in the development cycle. To overcome these issues, it becomes necessary to utilize simulation tools to assess the system behavior at an earlier stage. This paper demonstrates a methodology which implements such simulations to guide appropriate brake component tests that are more tractable for the brake supplier. As a result of this combined simulation and testing, a reduction in actual testing can be achieved. However, the ultimate success of the methodology depends on how well the components and the various parameters are estimated. Consequently, means to improve these estimations are also addressed in this paper.
