Self-Submersible SPM Cage Simulation in Regular Waves With Oblique Currents

Meeting the gap between food demand and availability is of grave concern, and open ocean or offshore mariculture is identified as a promising solution for reducing this gap. In a series of studies performed by the authors, an offshore cage design concept (i.e., a self-submersible single point mooring (SPM) cage concept) was developed and analyzed in regular waves with a following current. The results of previous studies are promising, but further analysis is needed to determine whether the cage system can perform effectively in oblique waves and currents. Hence, the current study extended numerical simulations to include waves and currents running in oblique directions and also analyzed the cage system in a following and adverse current. The results of the simulations indicate that in oblique waves and currents, and even in adverse currents (relative to the direction of wave propagation), the self-submersible SPM cage system shows good submergence characteristics such that it can be effectively used in an offshore environment.

This paper presents two different numerical methodologies to generate regular gravity waves in a wave tank. We performed numerical simulations of wave generation through the FLUENT® package, using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) multiphase model to reproduce the wave propagation in the tank. Thus it was possible to analyze two methods for generating regular waves that could be used in future work, especially in the study of devices of energy conversion from ocean waves into electrical energy.

This paper presents a different approach to the work developed by Cruz and Sarmento (2005), where the same problem was studied in the frequency domain. It concerns the same sphere, connected to the seabed by a tension line (single point moored), that oscillates with respect to the vertical direction in the plane of wave propagation. The pulsating nature of the sphere is the basic physical phenomenon that allows the use of this model as a simulation of a floating wave energy converter. The hydrodynamic coefficients and diffraction forces presented in Linton (1991) and Lopes and Sarmento (2002) for a submerged sphere are used. The equation of motion in the angular direction is solved in the time domain without any assumption about its output, allowing comparisons with the previously obtained results.

Abstract National Maritime Research Institute, NMRI, had been studying the analytical method on safety assessments of floating power generation facilities for ten years more. As a part of these studies, an Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) was also studied in our institute. The OTEC normally has a very long and thick Cold-Water Pipe (CWP) with an unanchored end to pump up a large amount of cold-water continuously. From the viewpoints of the safety assessments of the OTEC operation, it is noteworthy to confirm the effect of the existing long pipe against a floating unit/body and an effect of internal flowing water. It is necessary, moreover, to consider the Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV) effect for floater motions and structural analysis of the pipe itself and a connecting point of the floating structure. In this paper, the results of model tests and numerical simulations of a spar type floating OTEC with a single CWP in waves and currents are presented. The CWP model was made of material fitting the scaling law for a planned full scale OTEC. The specific and unique phenomena of the floating OTEC were confirmed from the model test results. Based on the results of the tank tests and the numerical simulations, we confirmed the necessary items and arrangements for safety evaluations. In detail, the internal flow increased the bending moment at the connection point.

A vessel-shaped fish farm concept for open sea applications has been proposed recently. The whole system consists of a vessel-shaped floater, fish cages positioned longitudinally along the floater, and a single-point mooring system. The whole system weathervanes; this feature increases the spread area for the fish waste. However, the downstream cages may experience reduced water exchange when the vessel is parallel to the currents. This situation may jeopardize the fish health. A dynamic positioning (DP) system may be necessary to improve the flow conditions. This paper investigates the misalignment angle between the heading of the vessel-shaped fish farm and the currents under combined wave and current conditions. The misalignment angle is critical for the estimation of the DP system consumption. A numerical model of the fish farm system with flexible nets is developed. Current reduction factors are included to account for the flow velocity reductions between the net panels. The heading of the system is obtained by finding the equilibrium condition of the whole system under each combined wave and current condition. An integrated method using metamodels is proposed and applied for the prediction of the misalignment angle for a reference site. The probability distribution of the misalignment angle between the vessel heading and the currents is calculated using the Kriging metamodel for the reference site. Based on the prediction, the requirement for the DP system to improve the flow condition in the fish cages is discussed.

Traditionally, single point diamond turning (SPDT) can not process ferreous metals because of acute tool wear. Ultrasonic vibration-assisted cutting(UVC) provides a promising solution for the problem. In this paper, for the aim of directly obtaining mirror surface on die steels, UVC method was used combining with SPDT process. Experiments were carried out on an ultra precision turning machine, cutting parameters and vibration parameters were well-chosen, and two kind of feed rates, two kinds of prevailing die steels were experimented. Mirror surfaces were successfully achieved on face turning, with the best roughness of Ra16.6nm. And the surface roughness, surface texture and tool wear in machining process were discussed.
