The allowable plastic load in pressure vessel Design by Analysis is determined by applying a graphical construction to a characteristic load-deformation plot of the collapse behavior of the vessel. This paper presents an alternative approach to the problem. The plastic response is characterized by considering the curvature of a plot of plastic work dissipated in the vessel against the applied load. It is proposed that salient points of curvature correspond to critical stages in the evolution of the gross plastic deformation mechanism. Application of the proposed criterion is illustrated by considering the elastic-plastic response of a simple cantilever beam in bending and a complex 3-D Finite Element Analysis of a nozzle intersection.

In the proposed plastic work curvature (PWC) criterion of plastic collapse, the plastic load is defined as the load corresponding to zero or minimal plastic work curvature after yielding and the formation of plastic mechanisms have occurred. Application of the proposed criterion is illustrated by considering the elastic-plastic response of a simple cantilever beam in bending and a complex three-dimensional finite element analysis of a nozzle intersection. The results show that the proposed approach gives higher values of plastic load than alternative criteria when the material exhibits strain hardening. It is proposed that this is because the PWC criterion more fully represents the constraining effect of material strain hardening on the spread of plastic deformation.

In previous papers, practical limits on the maximum applied load for standard ASME B16.5 and B16.47 carbon steel, weld neck pipe flanges were examined. A new code equation for the tangential (hoop) stress at the small end of the hub for a weld neck flange was developed to facilitate calculation of the limits using elastic analysis. The results were verified against elastic-plastic Finite Element Analysis (FEA). In this paper, the work is extended to include other flange configurations, including loose ring flanges, slip-on flanges and flat plate flanges. This paper is a continuation of the papers presented during PVP 2006 and PVP 2007 (Brown [1, 2]) and it extends the scope of the proposed methodology for determining flange stress limits in determining the maximum allowable bolt load for any given flange size and configuration.

With the advancement of technology, aiming for achieving a greater lightness and smaller size of 3C products, parts processing technology not only needs to explore the basic scientific theory of materials but also needs to discuss the process of deep drawing numerical and the plastic deformation. This study is based on the square shape of the deep drawing numerical simulation, and aluminum alloy plastic flow stress was input into the finite element method for simulation of plastic deformation in the aluminum alloy friction, mold clamping force, and frequency, as well as amplitude in the influence of forming mechanism and the drawing ratio of aluminum alloy. Finite element analysis software has the function of grid automatic rebuild, which can rebuild the broken grid in the analysis into a complete grid shape, which can avoid the divergence caused by numerical calculation in the analysis process. The greater the obtained error value, the best plastic parameters can be found.
