Abstract The present research investigates the effect of employing large displacement in finite element modelling on the generated shakedown (SD) boundaries of thin-walled 90-degree scheduled pipe bends. A recently developed methodology termed: Shakedown Limit - Plastic Work Dissipation (SDLimit-PWD) method generates the SD boundaries via employing the large displacement in the FE simulations. Additionally, a well-established direct non-cyclic technique termed: Shakedown Direct Noncyclic Technique (SD_DNT) generates the SD boundaries via employing the small displacement formulation in the FE simulations. Comparing the SD boundaries generated via both methods illustrated marked increase in the generated SD domains due to employing large displacement.

AbstractThis work addresses the determination of yield surfaces for geometrically exact elastoplastic rods. Use is made of a formulation where the rod is subjected to an uniform strain field along its arc length, thereby reducing the elastoplastic problem of the full rod to just its cross-section. By integrating the plastic work and the stresses over the rod’s cross-section, one then obtains discrete points of the yield surface in terms of stress resultants. Eventually, Lamé curves in their most general form are fitted to the discrete points by an appropriate optimisation method. The resulting continuous yield surfaces are examined for their scalability with respect to cross-section dimensions and also compared with existing analytical forms of yield surfaces.

PurposeA new approach is proposed toward accurately matching any given realistic hardening and softening data from uniaxial tensile test up to failure and moreover, toward bypassing usual tedious implicit trial-and-error iterative procedures in identifying numerous unknown parameters.Design/methodology/approachFinite strain response features of metals with realistic hardening-to-softening transition effects up to eventual failure are studied for the first time based on the self-consistent elastoplastic J2-flow model with the logarithmic stress rate. As contrasted with usual approximate and incomplete treatments merely considering certain particular types of hardening effects such as power type hardening, here a novel and explicit approach is proposed to obtain a complete form of the plastic-work-dependent yield strength over the whole hardening and softening range.FindingsA new multi-axial evolution equation for both hardening and softening effects is established in an explicit form. Complete results for the purpose of model validation and prediction are presented for the finite strain responses of monotonic uniaxial stretching up to failure.Originality/valueNew finite strain elastoplastic equations are established with a new history-dependent variable equivalently in place of the usual plastic work. With these equations, a unified and accurate simulation of both gardening and softening effects up to failure is achieved for the first time in an explicit sense without involving usual tedious implicit trial-and-error iterative procedures.

Cocoa powder is an important ingredient in the confectionery industry and, mannitol is an alternative sugar alcohol. In this work, mannitol powder was mixed with cocoa powder and compacted into tablet form via the uniaxial die compaction process. The frictional, compaction, tablet mechanical and disintegration properties were studied due to their importance in characterizing the behaviour of the tablets during processing and its final product characteristics at varying mannitol contents. The composition of mannitol in the mannitol-cocoa tablet varied at 95% w/w, 50% w/w and 5% w/w, while pure 100% w/w mannitol and cocoa tablets were set as controls. The compaction pressures used in making the tablets varied at 37.67 MPa, 75.34 MPa, 113.01 MPa, 150.68 MPa and 188.35 MPa. The compaction behaviour of the powder during the compaction process was evaluated using the plastic work and the maximum ejection stress values. The tablet strength was determined using the tensile strength method and tablet disintegration study was also conducted. The results showed that the increase in the compaction pressures increased the plastic work, maximum ejection pressure, tablet strength and also its disintegration time. The tablet formed having 95% w/w mannitol composition exhibited the highest plastic work value of 10.32±0.01 J, highest maximum ejection pressure value of 4.4±0.06 MPa, highest tensile strength value of 1.06±0.04 MPa and shortest disintegration time of 171±51 s amongst the three different mannitol compositions studied. Meanwhile, the effects of mannitol composition in the tablet on these observed responses were also dependent upon the compaction pressures used during tablet formation. In conclusion, the addition of mannitol improved the tablet strength and shorten the disintegration time in the experimental range employed in this study.

The role of cucurbit crops in the life of man has been studied and presented. The process of interaction between the rolling-in device of a combine-harvester and a fruit, as well as the process of hitting water-melons into different surfaces, have been considered. The diagram of the distribution of velocities when the rolling-in device interacts with a fruit, as well as the area of expansion of plastic deformation as a result of the impact of a fruit, have been presented. The equation of work, which arises when a fruit hits into the rolling-in device, has been considered, the work being decomposed into plastic work of deformation and elastic work of deformation. The work of plastic deformation, which arises when fruits come into collision with a surface, is considered in more detail, the work being decomposed into plastic work of deformation in the volume, which is limited by a spherical segment and a cone. The absolute and allowable velocities after the impact have been theoretically determined and substantiated. The parameters of allowable velocities for the varieties "Crimson sweet" and "Kholodok" have been theoretically found and the confirmation of the theoretical analysis was carried out in experimental research, which was conducted on a laboratory installation for determining the critical speed of impact on fruits of cucurbit crops. The comparison of the theoretical and experimental values of the terminal velocities confirms the credibility of the research.
