In this letter we illustrate three methods of using nonlinear devices as sensors. We show that the sensory features of these devices is a result of sensitive dependence on parameters which we show is equivalent to sensitive dependence on initial conditions. As a result, we conjecture that sensitive dependence on initial conditions is nature’s sensory device in cases where remarkable feats of sensory perception are seen.

We achieve the effective modulation of coupled-resonator-induced transparency (CRIT) in a photonic crystal system which consists of photonic crystal waveguide (PCW), defect cavities, and a multilayer graphene-insulator stack (MGIS). Simulation results show that the wavelength of transparency window can be effectively tuned through varying the chemical potential of graphene in MGIS. The peak value of the CRIT effect is closely related to the structural parameters of our proposed system. Tunable Multipeak CRIT is also realized in the four-resonator-coupled photonic crystal system by modulating the chemical potentials of MGISs in different cavity units. This system paves a novel way toward multichannel-selective filters, optical sensors, and nonlinear devices.

(Ba,Sr)TiO3 (BST) thin films have been investigated because of significant interest in device applications of their nonlinear dielectric properties such as in frequency tunable devices. We have investigated frequency conversion devices using BST films as new nonlinear devices, such as frequency mixers and multipliers. In this paper, we report the evaluation of nonlinear properties of various capacitors, and the experimental equation of the properties and the equivalent circuit model for frequency converters were established. A frequency multiplier using the BST film capacitor was fabricated, and obvious third harmonic signals could be observed. A conversion efficiency of -20 dB was obtained with a low input power of 0.25 W. Analysis of the converter with an equivalent circuit was also carried out, and the calculated output voltage agreed well with the measured result. The model is expected to be used for the analysis and improvement of conversion devices.

We propose an in-band measurement method of optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) output from an all-optical regeneration system with a nonlinear power transfer function (PTF) according to the fact that there are different average gains of signal and noise. For the all-optical quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) regenerator as an example, the output OSNR is derived from the input OSNR and the total gain of the degraded QPSK signal. Our simulation shows that the OSNR results obtained by this method are in agreement with those calculated from the error vector magnitude (EVM) formula. The method presented here has good applicability for different data rates but is also useful for analyzing the OSNR degradation of other nonlinear devices in optical communication links.
