Background:There has been a recent push in the sport psychology literature for sport participants to be approached based on their cultural backgrounds. However, there are few examples where a cultural approach is considered, such as a culturally reflexive version of participatory action research (PAR). In the current study, the role of family is considered in relation to the sport engagement of Canadian Aboriginal youth. Methods:Mainstream researchers teamed with coresearchers from the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve for 5 years. Community meetings and talking circles were employed as culturally sensitive data collection techniques to uncover how to encourage youth participation in Wikwemikong’s sport programs. The overarching methodology for the project is PAR.Results:Themes and subthemes were determined by community consensus with terms indigenous (ie, culturally relevant) among the local Aboriginal culture. Family was considered important for youth involvement in Aboriginal community sport programs. Parents were expected to support their children by managing schedules and priorities, providing transportation, financial support, encouragement, and being committed to the child’s activity. Aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings, grandparents, and the family as a whole were seen as sharing the responsibility to retain youth in sport through collateral support (ie, when gaps in parental support arose). Conclusions:Suggestions are proposed regarding how families in Aboriginal communities can collaborate to facilitate sport and physical activity among their youth. Further suggestions are proposed for researchers engaging in culturally reflexive research with participants and coresearchers from oppressed cultures.

Poverty is a condition of economic inability to meet the average standard of living of the community. This condition is exacerbated when women become the head of the family where they are not only responsible for domestic roles, but also fulfill all the needs of their family members. One of the efforts of the Bekasi City government to reduce poverty is by running an integrated program of Increasing the Role of Women Towards a Healthy and Prosperous Family (P2WKSS). P2WKSS is a program to improve the quality of life of women in the aspects of education, health and purchasing power, especially for poor families in villages. Using the Participatory Action Research method and the seven-stage community empowerment analysis model, this paper focuses on how to encourage P2WKSS as an answer to improving the welfare of women heads of poor families. This activity strengthens the contribution of P2WKSS activities in providing additional household economic income which directly improves the welfare of poor families.

Powerful images of musicians' parents have been immortalized in accounts of the lives of many iconic figures in Western music. Parents have been depicted as exerting enormous influence on their children's musical development, as in the cases of Mozart, Clara Schumann, and, more recently, Yehudi Menuhin and Jacqueline du Pré, to name but a few. At the other end of the spectrum are exceptional accounts of musicians who attained high levels of expertise and musical intelligence without parental support, as in the case of Louis Armstrong. This article considers these ‘intermediaries’ and suggests ways in which parents may most constructively support their children's musical development.

Traditionally secondary studies on achievement on Programme for International Students Assessment (PISA) tests point to the significant impact of socioeconomic status and cultural backgrounds of families as well as the role of parental involvement, which in some cases has had a negative impact on achievement. For this article, a model of structural regression was tested, with structural modelling software. This model included the following factors: domestic and educational assets, parental support for students, parents’ perceptions about science, and science competencies among 214 high performing Mexican students on PISA tests in 2015. This resulted in a structural regression model with a goodness of fit, where science competencies were a positive significant variable, impacted by domestic and educational assets and parental involvement. An additional restricted model with four variables manifested as mediators, revealed that science competencies were predicted positively and significantly by domestic and educational assets, and by the manifest parental emotional support variable. Variables related to ownership of educational and cultural assets and resources, as well as parental support, particularly emotional parental support, have positive and significant impact on science competencies.

This article is a reflection on the author’s personal experience undertaking a corporate secondment to the remote Aboriginal community of Aurukun in 2001–02, working on the Family Income Management Scheme. She analyses the history, context and possible motivations of such programs, and considers how likely they are to halt the severe social dysfunction currently manifest. Her discussion focuses on the role of individual ‘blow-ins’ in light of her own experience and explores some of the ways in which change might be achieved—within employees such as herself, at least.
