“It’s Recovery United for Me”: Promises and Pitfalls of Football as Part of Mental Health Recovery

This paper builds on the concept of mental health recovery to critically examine three football projects in the United Kingdom and their effects on the recovery process. Drawing on qualitative research on the lived experiences of mental health clients and service providers across the three projects, we explore the role of football in relation to three components of recovery: engagement, stigma, and social isolation. The findings indicate how the projects facilitated increased client engagement, peer supports, and the transformation of self-stigma. The perception of football as an alternative setting away from the clinical environment was an important factor in this regard. Yet, the results also reveal major limitations, including the narrow, individualistic conceptualization of both recovery and stigma within the projects, the reliance on a biomedical model of mental illness, and the potentially adverse consequences of using football in mental health interventions.

The Recovery College (RC) model represents a worldwide innovation in health systems. First appeared in England and now established in five continents, the RC model proposes a mental health educational approach in the community, emphasizingco-production, co-learning, and equity between theoretical/clinic knowledge and experiential knowledge (1-3). All participants(individuals with or without mental health challenges, their relatives, mental health professionals, health and education service providers, citizens) have access to mental health, recovery, and well-being training(4). Both participants and trainers collectively learn and reflect on their mental health attitudes, behaviors, and practices. This article reports on the co-construction process followed by Quebec's RC team, the first to have developed a RC logic model. The logic model conception followed six steps/strategies: 1) Participant observations, 2) Analysis of administrative documents, 3) Informal interviews and meetings with stakeholders (trainers, health service managers, and partner organizations) to better understand the implicit assumptions of the intervention, 4) Review of the literature related to the recovery college model, 5) Co-construction of causal links between resources, activities, and outcomes, 6) Validation and synthesis of the logic model. Finally, the logic model was disseminated, highlighting the relationships between the strategic resources needed for the key activities of the intervention to produce the expected outcomes.

Professional popular musicians are at increased risk of psychological distress, substance use problems, and suicide, yet little evidence is available on effective psychotherapeutic practices to address these issues. This scoping review aims to understand how professional popular musicians perceive, engage with, and respond to mental health interventions. Four databases were searched, garnering a total of 310 articles. Of these, six met inclusion criteria. Four thematic categories were explored: (1) amenability of professional popular musicians to particular therapeutic approaches; (2) attribution of treatment outcomes to tailored approaches; (3) professional popular musicians’ perceived barriers to treatment; and (4) recommendations for treatment approaches. The scoping review supports the importance of considering the characteristics of professional popular musicians as a distinct group with unique well-being needs, challenges, and strengths. There is a clear preference for tailored, affordable, and accessible approaches that consider the uniquities of musicianship and the need to explore the role of nonclinical support, such as friends, family, and industry peers.

Aims and methodMental Health Recovery Star is a multifaceted 10-item outcomes measure and key-working tool that has been widely adopted by service providers in the UK. We aimed to explore its factorial validity, internal consistency and responsiveness. Recovery Star readings were conducted twice with 203 working-age adults with moderate to severe mental health problems attending a range of mental health services, and a third time with 113 of these individuals.ResultsMental Health Recovery Star had high internal consistency and appeared to measure an underlying recovery-oriented construct. Results supported a valid two-factor structure which explained 48% of variance in Recovery Star ratings data. Two Recovery Star items (‘relationships’ and ‘addictive behaviour’) did not load onto either factor. There was good statistically significant item responsiveness, and no obvious item redundancy. Data for a small number of variables were not normally distributed and the implications of this are discussed.Clinical implicationsRecovery Star has been received enthusiastically by both mental health service providers and service users. This study provides further evidence for its adoption in recovery-focused mental health services and indicates that items relating to addictive behaviour, responsibilities and work could be further developed in future.

Organisations including the United Kingdom Armed Forces should seek to implement mental health interventions to increase the psychological well-being of their workforce. This editorial briefly presents ten key principles that military forces should consider before implementing such interventions. These include job-focused training; evaluating interventions; the use of internal versus external training providers; the role of leaders; unit cohesion, single versus multiple session psychological interventions; not overgeneralising the applicability of interventions; the need for repeated skills practice; raising awareness and the fallibility of screening.

This article is a theoretical analysis aimed at articulating the harm caused by media (mis)representation, and at showing existing ways in which this harm can be contested. The approaches analysed are largely from the United Kingdom. However, the issues they raise are not unique and the models explored are potentially transferable. The examples cover a range of media, including British right-wing press, television and Facebook; and characteristics protected by equality legislation in the UK such as sex, sexual orientation, race, religion and mental health stigma. Crucially, all the initiatives presented demonstrate the group-based nature of media (mis)representations, which cannot be understood and, therefore, cannot be addressed through individualistic approaches. Therefore, the article concludes that the role of groups as the targets of media (mis)representation and as potential claimants should be fully acknowledged and enabled.

Research and practice show that effective management of service recovery processes boosts customer satisfaction. Under this assumption, the purpose of this paper is to analyze a set of factors which may determine satisfaction with recovery processes and loyalty. We also analyze the role of age as potential moderating. Segmenting customers' samples by age may potentially contribute to more effective service recovery process management. Older customers seem to be more loyal when dealing with service providers than younger customers, while younger customers are more demanding in terms of companies' efforts. Implications for both literature and practice are included at the front-end of the paper. Remiantis šia prielaida, straipsnio tikslas yra išanalizuoti veiksnius, turinčius įtakos klientų pasitenkinimo lygiui ir lojalumui. Taip pat analizuojamas ir vartotojų amžiaus rodiklis, jo potencialo kaita. Atsižvelgiant į tai, klientai buvo sugrupuoti pagal amžių ir buvo analizuojama, kaip vieni ar kiti procesai juos veikia. Atliktas tyrimas parodė, kad vyresnio amžiaus klientai yra labiau ištikimi nei jaunesni, o jaunesni klientai yra reiklesni įmonių teikiamoms paslaugoms.

Purpose: Families experience their own journey in adjusting to the role of carer. The purpose of this review was to understand from the perspective of families and carers which practices, and health system responses meet their needs in supporting people who experience mental health challenges. Methods: A systematic evidence mapping review was conducted, through searching five electronic databases to identify peer-reviewed studies, written in English and published between the years 2010 and 2020, that prioritized the perspectives of families. Results: Fifty-five studies met the inclusion criteria and were mapped according to the country of author, year, methodology, who delivered, and intervention mode and format. Discussion: The review demonstrated a diversity of interventions with growing numbers of studies considering the view and experiences of carers. There is evidence of increasingly active participation of carers in designing, leading, or facilitating interventions, recognizing the importance of coproduction in tailoring family and carer support.
