Fatigue cracks in the piston heads of the connecting rods of opposed compressors can occasionally develop in service. A study of the loading of the connecting rods of the compressors operating in chemical production was carried out to assess the probability of their failure-free operation. Since the experimental study of stresses acting in large structural elements is rather difficult, the study of the stress state was carried out using computational methods with subsequent comparison of the results with the experimental data. When loading the connecting rod, there is an area affected by the distributed load and another area with a gap between the cylindrical surfaces where the contact pressure is absent. The forces acting on the boundary of the contact areas and the gap of the finger with the connecting rod bore are determined: the radial force N, tangential force Q and bending moment M. N and Q are considered functions of the contact angle α. Using numerical experiments, we determined the stresses in the zone from the angle α corresponding to the end of the contact zone to the angle of transition of the head in the shank of connecting rod in conditions of varied operational loads and gaps in the connecting rod — finger coupling. The values and character of changes in the loads affecting the crank mechanism of the compressor during operation are determined experimentally. The distribution of stresses in the sections of the connecting rod and the most loaded cross-sections are specified. the results of the numerical experiment are compared with the experimental data. Comparison of the results of numerical and field experiments has shown that the numerical experiment provides the similar assessment of the stress distribution, moreover, the numerical experiment allows us to estimate the simultaneous effect of both loads and gaps on the stress growth which is almost impossible to be determined by experimental studies.

This report describes a numerical and experimental study of a posture control device based on a movable float for portable underwater robots. We numerically analyzed the static stability using a stability curve and allowable spatial range of a center-of-gravity shift caused by a payload shift or manipulator configuration. Further, we proposed a feedback controller based on direct pitch and roll signals to change and maintain robot posture. We tested the feedback control using a numerical simulator and conducted experiments in a water tank using two portable underwater robots to demonstrate the effectiveness of the movable float device and proposed controller. The results of the field experiments showed that the device and proposed controller can be employed for effective underwater operations of portable underwater robots.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to improve the technical and economic performance of the enhanced two-machine seeder based on the wheel-type tractor of traction class 1.4. Experimental research is based on the general provisions of the standard methodology for operational and technological evaluation of the operation of machine-tractor units in the field. Processing of results from experimental study was carried out by means of developed programs on a PC. Results obtained from field experiments testing the aggregate consisting of two-machine seeder of traction class 1.4, two SZ-3.6 seeders and a semi-mounted coupler indicate its high operational and technological efficiency in comparison to both single-machine and similar two-machine units as part of a conventional trailer hitch. Although it shows an increase in specific time losses at headland of up to 5%, due to the wider working width, utilization of a new two-machine unit on the basis of a semi-mounted coupling in comparison with a single-machine unit allows increasing the productivity of the work by 1.96 and reduction of fuel consumption by 20%. In order to ensure that two-machine unit will perform turning on headland in the optimal mode, it is necessary to equip it with a special automatic device that would change the speed of movement in compliance with the angular speed of tractor‘s steering wheels according to the developed algorithm.

Experimental crosses between Salix discolor, S. petiolaris, S. bebbiana, and S. lucida resulted in the synthetic hybrids S. discolor × petiolaris and S. bebbiana × petiolaris and their reciprocals. The cross S. bebbiana × discolor and all crosses involving S. lucida were unsuccessful. Field experiments on the mode of pollination of Salix revealed the presence of wind-borne pollen of S. discolor, S. petiolaris, and S. bebbiana, and seed was set by these species in the absence of insect vectors. They are suspected to be both entomophilous and anemophilous. Salix lucida did not set seeds under these conditions and it is hypothesized that it is fundamentally entomophilous. Evidence is presented that suggests that natural hybridization between S. discolor and S. petiolaris may be restricted by differences in flowering time and by pollen competition.
