CO2 Laser-induced and BCl3-sensitized decomposition of hexafluoroacetone. Comparison with high temperature thermochemistry

The cw CO2laser-induced decomposition of hexafluoroacetone sensitized with boron trichloride (total pressure 5.3-8.0 kPa) yields along with perfluorinated hydrocarbons trifluoroacetyl fluoride, carbon monoxide and carbonyl fluoride. The same carbonyl compounds are also formed by conventional thermal decomposition of hexafluoroacetone on tungsten filament at temperatures 950-2 100°C but their distribution during reaction progress is different. Features of both reactions are discussed.

Reaction of SF6 with CO was initiated with a cw CO2 laser and shown to represent a system of two competitive consecutive reactions, namely the reaction between SF6 and CO affording COF2 and SF4, and the reaction between SF4 and CO leading to SOF2 and CF4. The former, major, reaction is favored with lower consumption of SF6 and lower SF6/CO ratio in the initial SF6-CO mixture.

The continuous-wave (cw) CO2 laser induced decomposition of propylene oxide yields propanal, propanone and methyl vinyl ether as primary isomerization products. The absence of allylol and great amounts of ethene among products of ensuing fragmentation of primary products make the reaction different from conventional thermal decomposition of propylene oxide. CW CO2 laser induced decomposition of methyl vinyl ether affords propanal as isomerization product and shows thermal interconvertibility of propylene oxide and methyl vinyl ether.

The title reaction of hexafluorocyclobutene, 1,2-dichloro-3,3,4,4-tetrafluorocyclobutene and decafluorocyclohexene studied at total pressure 13.3 and 16 kPa yield oxalyl halides COX.COX (X = F, Cl) and C2F4 that undergo consecutive reactions to COF2, CO and X2. The oxidation of decafluorocyclohexene is preceded by retro-Diels-Alder decomposition affording hexafluorocyclobutene and C2F4. Two alternative mechanisms for the oxidation of the cyclobutenes are presented, one involving a novel cleavage of intermediary bicyclic dioxetanes. The decomposition of oxalyl fluoride into COF2 and CO is favored over its oxidation.

ABSTRACTA unique and efficient plasma jet reactor has been developed and used to study the high temperature production of carbon monoxide from a reaction between powdered carbon and a pure carbon dioxide plasma. The plasma jet reactor was designed to allow the injection of powdered carbon above the arc discharge region rather than into the plasma flame below the arc discharge region. High yields of carbon monoxide, produced at relatively high efficiencies, were a direct result of this technique. The plasma jet was also designed to enable rapid changing and testing of various anode insertsAverage yields of carbon monoxide in the product gases were as high as 80–87% in selected experimental trials. Carbon monoxide was produced at rates exceeding 15,000 1/hr (at STP) with a power expenditure of 52 Kw.

The thermal decomposition of Co2(CO)6(PhC2Ph) has been investigated in detail. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to determine the most suitable temperature range for the study. At 180�, Co2(CO)6(PhC2Ph) decomposes to form cobalt, carbon monoxide, tetraphenylcyclopentadienone, hexaphenylbenzene, and other organic compounds. Variation in the temperature, the time, and the solvent used for the degradation reaction causes significant changes in the yields of the organic products. An investigation of the effects of adding stoichiometric amounts of free alkyne, tetra-phenylcyclopentadienone, and hexaphenylbenzene has been initiated in an attempt to understand the degradation mechanism.
