Abstract Thermal spray is a versatile process that produces high-quality coatings possessing diverse properties such as superhydrophobicity, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, dielectric properties etc. Conventionally, powder feedstock is used in thermal spray, and this process is commercialised in numerous industrial processes. However, liquid feedstock based thermal spray is still in its development phases, due to limited information available on process parameters. Various parameters such as plasma/fuel gas, plasma current, feedrate, feeding angle, type of feedstock (suspension or solution precursor), feedstock concentration, feedstock viscosity, solvent, etc. significantly influence the thermal and kinetic energy exchange between plasma/flame and feedstock material. Suspension plasma spray (SPS) and suspension high velocity oxy-fuel spray (SHVOF), once optimised, can give rise to coatings with multiscale features. An in-depth understanding of the complex interaction between feedstock solution/suspension chemical-physical properties and plasma/flame jet characteristics is essential to understand its specific impact on coating properties and their application. This paper presents comparisons between two different TiO2 coatings, deposited by SPS and S-HVOF, and obtained by varying some of the fundamental spray deposition parameters. The surface morphology and cross-sections of the as-deposited coatings were compared through SEM/EDX. Further, surface wetting properties were analysed through measuring the static and dynamic contact angles.

At present, development of plasma assisted ignition and combustion is a very promising research area due to its wide applications in the field of aeronautical engines and power sector. Plasma discharge can improve the combustion because it produces large number of chemically active particles which affects the chemical reaction. Simulation is an effective tool to analyze the interaction between the plasma and the flame through the implementation of plasma-assisted combustion. This study focused on three main objectives. Initially a microscopic plasma model with detailed kinetic plasma mechanisms was developed, then the validation of these mechanisms in air/methane mixture has been performed. Finally, the effects of nano pulsed plasma discharge on combustion have been investigated. In order to accomplish the above task, two numerical tools Chemical Kinetic Solver (CHEMKIN) and Plasma Kinetic Solver (ZDPlasKin) are used. It was found that the kinetic model of plasma provides good overall agreement with experimental data and identify key processes for species (e.g. O atom) generation and decay. The results showed that with the increase of reduced electric field, active particles and intermediate species/radicals (in particular ozone) are increased. ZDPlasKin results were incorporated in CHEMKIN to investigate and compare the flame speed, thermal and chemical effect by using a GRI-Mech scheme modified with the addition of ozone reactions. It has been found that with the adding of plasma flame speed was increased up to 26% at stoichiometric ratio. The chemical heat release also showed increment at low temperatures that confirmed the combustion enhancement. Furthermore, ignition delay timings were significantly reduced with the plasma excitation.

This study is focused on a novel high-thermal-conductive C/C composite used in heat-redistribution thermal protection systems. The 3D mesophase pitch-based carbon fiber (CFMP) preform was prepared using CFMP in the X (Y) direction and polyacrylonitrile carbon fiber (CFPAN) in the Z direction. After the preform was densified by chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) and polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP), the 3D high-thermal-conductive C/C (CMP/C) composite was obtained. The prepared CMP/C composite has higher thermal conduction in the X and Y directions. After an ablation test, the CFPAN becomes needle-shaped, while the CFMP shows a wedge shape. The fiber/matrix and matrix/matrix interfaces are preferentially oxidized and damaged during ablation. After being coated by SiC coating, the thermal conductivity plays a significant role in decreasing the hot-side temperature and protecting the SiC coating from erosion by flame. The SiC-coated CMP/C composite has better ablation resistance than the SiC-coated CPAN/C composite. The mass ablation rate of the sample is 0.19 mg·(cm−2·s−1), and the linear ablation rate is 0.52 μm·s−1.
