2,3,5,6-Tetrasubstituted-4-aryl-1-(6-ethoxybenzothiazol-2-yl)-1,4-dihydropyridines were synthesized by the reaction of 2-amino-6-ethoxybenzothiazole, an aromatic aldehyde and an active methylene compound in methanol by conventional or microwave irradiation method (solvent-free or with solid support). All compounds were tested for antibacterial and antifungal activities and the results were compared with standard drugs. Their acaricidal and antifeedant activities were also tested.

The reaction of 1-butylimidazole (1a) with aryl/alkoxy halides (2a–h) using a microwave solvent-free approach delivered imidazolium-based ILs (3a–h) in good yield. Some of them showed promising antibacterial and antifungal activities.

The chemical composition of the essential oil from flowers of Eringium triquetrum Vahl. collected in Sicily was evaluated by GC and GC-MS. The main components were pulegone (50.6%), piperitenone (30.5%) and menthone (7.0%). Comparison of this oil with other studied oils of Eringium species is discussed. The oil showed good antibacterial and antifungal activities against some microorganisms that infest historical art works.
