A 12-year-old Arabian gelding presented to the University of Adelaide for investigation of a firm subcutaneous mass, just proximal to the digital flexor tendon sheath of the right forelimb, that had appeared two weeks prior. The skin overlying the mass was intact. Fine needle aspiration identified eosinophilic and mastocytic infiltrates. One week later, the gelding re-presented for persistent colic signs. Blood examination showed eosinophilia, and on palpation per rectum the mesenteric root was very firm and enlarged and a number of small intestinal loops had subjectively thickened walls. Colic signs were unabated by the administration of pain relief. The owner declined surgery and the gelding was euthanased. Postmortem examination confirmed a diagnosis of cutaneous mastocytoma and revealed eosinophilic infiltration of the small intestine.

A 15-y-old castrated male Maine Coon cat was evaluated for an ulcerated soft tissue mass on the right hindlimb that had been observed for 4 mo and had grown rapidly. A 3 × 3 cm soft, raised, amorphous, and ulcerated subcutaneous mass was observed on the lateral right metatarsus. In-house cytology via fine-needle aspiration was nondiagnostic. Incisional biopsy of the mass and further staging was declined, and amputation was elected. The amputated limb was submitted for histopathology, which revealed severe chronic nodular granulomatous dermatitis and multifocal granulomatous popliteal lymphadenitis with large numbers of intralesional fungal hyphae. Fungal PCR and sequencing on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue identified Chalastospora gossypii. No adjunctive therapy was elected at the time. The patient has done well clinically 1 y post-operatively. C. gossypii is a rare microfungus found worldwide and is considered a minor pathogen of several plants. To our knowledge, infection by this fungus has not been reported previously in veterinary species. Features in our case are comparable to other mycotic infections. Nodular granulomatous mycotic dermatitis and cellulitis, although uncommon, should be a differential for soft tissue masses in veterinary species; C. gossypii is a novel isolate.

A 9-year-old Irish sports horse gelding was anaesthetised out-of-hours for management of digital flexor tendon sheath sepsis after a left hind foot penetration. In the postanaesthetic period, the patient manifested a right forelimb non-weight bearing lameness. Diagnostic imaging and serum biochemistry were unremarkable. The animal progressively deteriorated and became recumbent. After consultation with the owner, euthanasia was performed on welfare grounds. A postmortem examination was performed to establish the cause of the right forelimb lameness. After excluding all other probable causes of postanaesthetic lameness, it was concluded that the patient manifested a postanaesthetic compartmental syndrome due to haemorrhage associated with the ulnar nerve developed intraoperatively. This case report discusses factors associated with increased anaesthetic-related mortality in elective surgical procedures performed out-of-hours, other causes of postanaesthetic forelimb lameness and diagnosis of, and treatment options for, brachial compartment syndrome.

β-Adrenoceptors are G protein-coupled receptors whose functions are closely associated with caveolae in the heart and cultured cell lines. In the gut, they are responsible, at least in part, for the mediation of the sympathetic stimulation that might lead to intestinal paralysis postoperatively. We examined the effect of caveolin-1 knockout on the β-adrenoceptor response in mouse small intestine. The relaxation response to (−)-isoprenaline in carbachol-contracted small intestinal tissue segments was reduced in caveolin-1 knockout mice (cav1−/−) compared with their genetic controls (cav1+/+). Immunohistochemical staining showed that β-adrenoceptor expression was similar in both strains in gut smooth muscle. Selective β-adrenoceptor blockers shifted the concentration response curve (CRC) of (−)-isoprenaline to the right in cav1+/+ intestine, but not in cav1−/−, with greatest shift in case of the β3-blocker, SR59230A. The CRC of the selective β3-agonist BRL 37344 was also shifted to the right in cav1−/− compared with cav1+/+. The cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) inhibitor H-89 shifted the CRC of (−)-isoprenaline to the right in cav1+/+ but not in cav1−/−. H-89 reduced the relaxation due to forskolin and dibutyryl cAMP in cav1+/+ but not in cav1−/−, suggesting a reduction in PKA activity in cav1−/−. In cav1+/+, PKA was colocalized with caveolin-1 in the cell membrane, but PKA immunoreactivity persisted in cav1−/−. Examination of PKA expression in the lipid raft-rich membrane fraction of the jejunum revealed reduced PKA expression in cav1−/− compared with cav1+/+. The results of the present study show that the function of β-adrenoceptors is reduced in cav1−/− small intestine likely owing to reduced PKA activity.

The case presents entrapped inguinal hernia and its incorrect repositioning with resulted strangulation of small intestine. The purpose of the work. Prevention of such cases in surgery and observance of strict rules of classical canons in the surgical environment, which remain relevant today. Patient M., 45 years old, was urgently hospitalized with complaints of intense, intractable, painful protrusion in the hernia in the right groin. From the anamnesis – suff ers from right inguinal hernia for 3 years. The day before, during exercise, an intractable, painful protrusion appeared at the site of the hernia, which began to increase. When examining the abdomen in the projection of the outer ring of the right inguinal canal there is a hernial protrusion, which does not disappear and does not change in size when changing body position. The protrusion is tense, dense, painful, the symptom of «coughing» in the area of protrusion is not transmitted, and coughing increases the pain. No free air and Kloiber’s bowls were found in the abdomen. According to laboratory and instrumental examination and objective signs, the diapatient was diagnosed with strangulated right inguinal hernia. During the examination of the patient, the hernial protrusion was exercised, so the patient was dynamically monitored. The next day the patient left the surgical department due to family circumstances. After 3 days, the patient again went to the surgical department with complaints of thirst and abdominal pain, vomiting with small intestine content and no discharge of gases and no bowel movements for 5 days. On examination, the patient’s condition is moderate. Taking into account the anamnesis, clinical evolution of the disease, laboratory and instrumental examination data and objective signs, it was concluded that the patient has acute surgical pathology. Diagnosed with: Acute small intestinal obstruction. The clinical case shows a misalignment of a strangulated inguinal hernia. After self-repositioning of the hernia, patients should be hospitalized to the surgical department for an elective surgery.

Tenosynovial chondromatosis is a rare benign disorder characterized by formation of cartilaginous bodies within the synovia of the tendon sheaths. Most commonly present in the hands and feet. Clinical presentation and plain radiography can be inconclusive, which can lead to misclassification, most often confused as a chondroma of soft parts. In this case, we report the clinical, radiologic, and histology of a 59-year-old man who presented with a 1-year history of mass on the right fifth digit with limitation of motion secondary to this condition. Surgical excision revealed multiple cartilaginous nodules of varying size arising from the flexor tendon sheath. The diagnosis was confirmed postoperatively by surgical histopathology. The postoperative course of the patient was uncomplicated and has achieved an excellent functional recovery.

Low temperature x-ray microanalysis (LTXM) of solid biological materials has been documented for Lemna minor L. root tips. This discussion will be limited to a demonstration of LTXM for measuring relative elemental distributions of P,S,Cl and K species within whole cells of tobacco leaves.Mature Wisconsin-38 tobacco was grown in the greenhouse at the University of California, Berkeley and picked daily from the mid-stalk position (leaf #9). The tissue was excised from the right of the mid rib and rapidly frozen in liquid nitrogen slush. It was then placed into an Amray biochamber and maintained at 103K. Fracture faces of the tissue were prepared and carbon-coated in the biochamber. The prepared sample was transferred from the biochamber to the Amray 1000A SEM equipped with a cold stage to maintain low temperatures at 103K. Analyses were performed using a tungsten source with accelerating voltages of 17.5 to 20 KV and beam currents from 1-2nA.

Governments the world over are increasingly challenging universities to produce human resources with the right skills sets and knowledge required to drive their economies in this twenty-first century. It therefore becomes important for universities to produce graduates that bring tangible and meaningful contributions to the economies. Graduate tracer studies are hailed to be one of the ways in which universities can respond and reposition themselves to the actual needs of the industry. It is against this background that this study was conducted to establish the relevance of the Department of Information and Communication Technology at Mzuzu University to the Malawian economy by systematically investigating occupations of its former students after graduating from the University. The study adopted a quantitative design by distributing an online-based questionnaire with predominantly closed-ended questions. The study focused on three key objectives: to identify key employing sectors of ICT graduates, to gauge the relevance of the ICT programme to its former students’ jobs and businesses, and to establish the level of satisfaction of the ICT curriculum from the perspectives of former ICT graduates. The key findings from the study are that the ICT programme is relevant to the industry. However, some respondents were of the view that the curriculum should be strengthened by revising it through an addition of courses such as Mobile Application Development, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Data Mining, and LINUX Administration to keep abreast with the ever-changing ICT trends and job requirements. The study strongly recommends the need for regular reviews of the curriculum so that it is continually responding to and matches the needs of the industry.

The proposed material examines the creative task of students majoring in Social Pedagogy at the University „Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov“ in Burgas, and studying the discipline Art Pedagogy – Part 1 – Music. In the course of the lecture course students get acquainted with the elements of musical expression, as a means of figurative representations and impact of music, with different techniques concerning individual musical activities, with the endless and diverse opportunities that music provides in the use of art pedagogy for social work teachers.Verbal interpretation of music is a necessary component when working with children with special educational needs, at risk and in the norm. Looking at Tchaikovsky’s short and extremely figurative piano piece „The Sick Doll“ from his charming „Children’s Album“, in the form of a short story, tale or essay, students express their personal vision, feeling and transformation of the musical image. The aim of the task is to transcribe the sound image into a verbal one. This requires speed, flexibility and logic in thinking, through imagination and creativity in its manifestation. Children love to listen, especially when they are involved. In search of the right way to solve problems and situations, future social educators could successfully benefit from the conversion of sound into words, according to the needs and deficits of the individual or group.
