Fossil seed cuticles from the Upper Cretaceous Whitemud beds of Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada

Abundant fossil cuticles are associated with megaspores in the Upper Cretaceous Whitemud beds of the southern Alberta plains and in the Whitemud Formation of the Cypress Hills. Form genera Spermatites Miner and Costatheca (Dijkstra) Hall are emended, and the new genus Carpotheca is described. The three genera are differentiated by shape and orientation of cuticular cells. Ten new species of seed cuticles are described. The affinity of Spermatites with the extant genus Juncus L. is reaffirmed, and it is suggested that Costatheca may be related to extant species of Butomus L. In the Whitemud, Costatheca is more abundant in the Alberta plains, whereas Spermatites and Carpotheca are better represented in the Cypress Hills. The fossil microfloral assemblage indicates that these beds were deposited in a continental, fluviatile to lacustrine environment, having a subtropical climate, in agreement with previous sedimentological, isotopic, and palynological investigations.

Leaves of three species belonging to the family Araucariaceae are described from two Eocene localities in Tasmania. Araucarioides gen. nov. is proposed to contain the fossil species. The erection of a new genus is necessary for two reasons. Two new species, A. linearis and A. sinuosa, are intermediate between Agathis and Araucaria and do not have the Florin rings which are the characteristic of extant species of Araucariaceae. The third new species, A. annulata, while clearly belonging to the Araucariaceae, is not well enough preserved to be assigned to an extant genus. These species confirm the presence of the subtropical/tropical Araucariaceae in Tasmania in the Eocene. The evolutionary position of the fossil species is uncertain at present.

The chelonian fauna of the Portezuelo Formation (Turonian-Coniacian), outcropping at Sierra del Portezuelo (Neuquén province, Argentina), is reported. Two new taxa of pleurodiran turtles are described. One of them is Prochelidella portezuelae new species, a short-necked chelid closely related to extinct species of the Lohan Cura (Albian), Candeleros (Cenomanian), and Bajo Barreal (Turonian) formations from northwestern and central Patagonia, and to the extant species of the genus Acanthochelys. The other is Portezueloemys patagonica new genus and species, a member of the epifamily Podocnemidoidea, and is considered the sister group of the family Podocnemididae. This discovery confirms the coexistence in northwestern Patagonia of a north gondwanan component (Pelomedusoides) and a south gondwanan element (Chelidae) during the Turonian-Coniacian.

Three new genera and six new species of shallow-marine gastropods are named from Upper Cretaceous strata found mainly in California. The trochidsCidarina cretaceanew species andCidarina betanew species, the ficidBulbificopsis garzanew genus and new species, and the cancellariidMataxa aridanew species are from the Maastrichtian part of the Moreno Formation of north-central California. This is the earliest record ofCidarina, whose previous chronologic range was middle Eocene to Recent.Bulbificopsisis the first record of a Cretaceous ficid from the Pacific slope of North America, andMataxawas previously known only from Upper Cretaceous strata in the southeastern United States and northeastern Brazil. The buccinidEripachya jalamanew species and the fasciolariidCalkota daileyinew genus and new species are from the lower upper Campanian Jalama Formation in southern California.Calkotais also recognized herein as occurring in upper Maastrichtian strata of North Dakota and South Dakota. The new melongenid genus,Pentzia, established forFulgur hilgardiWhite, 1889, is from Campanian strata throughout California; middle Campanian strata on Sucia Island, Washington; and upper Campanian to lower Maastrichtian strata in northern Baja California, Mexico.

A new system of nomenclature is proposed with the purpose of presenting a scheme which will be applicable to spores, pollens, and other microfossils from all geological ages. A review of previous nomenclatural systems is presented to indicate the historical development of microfossil nomenclature. The applicability of the new system is illustrated by naming 21 new species and four new genera of Upper Cretaceous microfossils from the Comox formation of Vancouver Island and the Oldman formation of southern Alberta. The microfossil conspecti are briefly compared with the assemblage previously reported from the Brazeau formation of western Alberta. Advantages of the new nomenclatural scheme are discussed in the light of future discoveries of plant microfossils, and their application to palaeobotanical and geological problems.

One new genus and three new species of Lygistorrhinidae in early Eocene Cambay amber from India are described, which significantly increases our knowledge about this group in the Eocene.Lygistorrhina indican. sp. is the oldest fossil known from this extant genus.Indorrhina sahniin. gen. et sp. shows morphological similarities to each of the two extant generaLygistorrhinaandAsiorrhina.Palaeognoriste orientaleis the third species known from a group that has only been recorded from Eocene Baltic amber before. The latter finding reveals faunal links between Cambay amber and the probably slightly younger Baltic amber, adding further evidence that faunal exchange between Europe/Asia and India took place before the formation of Cambay amber.

The present article represents the first part of a review of fossil heterostigmatic mites collected from late Eocene Rovno amber. Here, mites of the families Tarsocheylidae, Dolichocybidae, and Acarophenacidae are described, with Tarsocheylidae and Dolichocybidae recorded for the first time from amber. A new genus and four new species are described, namely, Hoplocheylus similis sp. nov. (Tarsocheylidae), Dolichocybe elongata sp. nov. (Dolichocybidae), Proadactylidium fossibilis gen. and sp. nov. and Paradactylidium sineunguis sp. nov. (Acarophenacidae). The extant species Acarophenax lacunatus Cross and Krantz, 1964 and A. assanovi Livshitz and Mitrofanov, 1974 are transferred to the new genus Proadactylidium. A revised key to the genera of Acarophenacidae is presented. The homologies of prodorsal setae in Acarophenacidae are reconsidered and reviewed.

The genus Conocrinus d’Orbigny, 1850 (Crinoidea, Bourgueticrinina) was established on the basis of two aboral cups that had previously been described as Bourgueticrinus thorenti d’Archiac, 1846. One of these (now considered lost) came from the “Rocher du Goulet” at the base of the Biarritz section (Bartonian, Côte des Basques, southwest France). D’Archiac figured only the second cup; this belongs to the d’Orbigny Collection and is still housed in the palaeontological collection of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle (Paris) as the lectotype of the species, C. thorenti. It appears that it was collected from Priabonian levels exposed near Castellane (Alpes de Haute Provence, southeast France). New observations on this cup, as well as a detailed study of the characters of aboral cups, columnals and proximal brachials in a few extant and fossil species classically attributed to Conocrinus or to closely related genera such as Democrinus, Rhizocrinus and Tormocrinus, have yielded arguments for a revision of the taxonomy and interrelationships of extant and fossil taxa in the family Bourgueticrinidae. Conocrinus (= Tormocrinus), as here interpreted, includes six Eocene species: C. thorenti, C. archiaci, C. cahuzaci n. sp., C. duperrieri, C. cf. suessi and C. veronensis. Numerous extinct species previously attributed to Conocrinus or Democrinus are here transferred to two new genera which first occur in the lower Paleocene: Paraconocrinus n. gen. (type species: P. pyriformis) and Pseudoconocrinus n. gen. (type species: P. doncieuxi). Aboral cups from the “Rocher du Goulet” (Biarritz) are here assigned to Paraconocrinus pellati n. gen., n. sp., while the Danian species Democrinus maximus is transferred to Pseudoconocrinus n. gen. A new genus, Cherbonniericrinus, is created to accommodate a single extant species, Ch. cherbonnieri, previously attributed to Conocrinus, while the extant genus Rhizocrinus, closely related to Democrinus, is resurrected. Conocrinus and closely related genera are derived from a bourgueticrinine lineage the first record of which is from the lower Campanian, with the new genus Carstenicrinus. These are all attributed to the family Rhizocrinidae which is here considered distinct from the family Bourgueticrinidae. Rhizocrinids rapidly diversified immediately after the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K/Pg) event. Cretaceous taxa previously placed within the family Bourgueticrinidae now appear to be polyphyletic. Some of them do not belong to Bourgueticrinina, such as those of the Dunnicrinus lineage. Interrelationships of Rhizocrinidae and other post-Palaeozoic families having a xenomorphic stalk are discussed.
