The moss flora of the Gaspé Peninsula (Quebec, Canada): list of species and preliminary analysis

Extensive field studies and evaluation of previously published reports reveal a moss flora of at least 310 species for the Gaspé Peninsula. Forty species are reported for the first time from the peninsula, and Brachythecium glaciale is new to Quebec. While the Gaspé flora cannot be considered a distinctive one within the Gulf of St. Lawrence region, the large number of rare species is significant. Their presence in the Gaspé can be attributed to the diverse geology and topography of the peninsula. The bulk of the moss flora is clearly of boreal affinity, but many species have temperate, montane, or arctic – alpine distributions. Of special interest is the large proportion of species with various types of disjunct distributions, either within eastern North America or to other parts of the world, especially western North America. Some patterns strongly support the idea of survival in refugia in the Gulf of St. Lawrence region during the last glaciation.

We report for the first time the terrestrial slug Prophysaon andersonii (J.G. Cooper, 1872) from Quebec, Canada. Two specimens were collected in Parc national du Bic. The identification was determined by the external morphology and partial-COI gene sequence data. The genus Prophysaon is endemic to western North America, and the new record indisputably represents an introduction. No species of Prophysaon has, until now, been noticed in North America from outside its native range.

Urtica dioica L. in its wider sense is reported from nearly all temperate zones of the world, from throughout Eurasia, from North America and South America, from S Africa and New Zealand. In Europe, over 70 infrasubspecific names referable to the widespread and often weedy U. dioica subsp. dioica have been used in one form or another; over 40 of them are formally described. Many of these names are invalid and/or superfluous. However, several identifiable morphotypes can be found, which are stable in cultivation and usually occur in several different regions of Europe and/or are characterized by some type of habitat preference. These morphotypes in their most characteristic expression are quite well differentiated, but are connected by a continuous series of intermediates in nature. As a working hypothesis we here propose the tentative recognition of the following five morphotypes: U. dioica subsp. dioica var. dioica, -var. hispida, -var. sarmatica, -var. holosericea, and -var. glabrata. A characterization of each morphotype and corresponding synonyms are presented here based on extensive field studies, literature and herbarium studies and cultivation of material. Lecto-and neotypes are designated where necessary for some of the more important names.

Abstract. A reliable and up-to-date ship emission inventory is essential for atmospheric scientists quantifying the impact of shipping and for policy makers implementing regulations and incentives for emission reduction. The emission modelling in this study takes into account ship type and size dependent input data for 15 ship types and 7 size categories. Global port arrival and departure data for more than 32 000 merchant ships are used to establish operational profiles for the ship segments. The modelled total fuel consumption amounts to 217 Mt in 2004 of which 11 Mt is consumed in in-port operations. This is in agreement with international sales statistics. The modelled fuel consumption is applied to develop global emission inventories for CO2, NO2, SO2, CO, CH4, VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds), N2O, BC (Black Carbon) and OC (Organic Carbon). The global emissions from ships at sea and in ports are distributed geographically, applying extended geographical data sets covering about 2 million global ship observations and global port data for 32 000 ships. In addition to inventories for the world fleet, inventories are produced separately for the three dominating ship types, using ship type specific emission modelling and traffic distributions. A global Chemical Transport Model (CTM) was used to calculate the environmental impacts of the emissions. We find that ship emissions is a dominant contributor over much of the world oceans to surface concentrations of NO2 and SO2. The contribution is also large over some coastal zones. For surface ozone the contribution is high over the oceans but clearly also of importance over western North America (contribution 15–25%) and western Europe (5–15%). The contribution to tropospheric column ozone is up to 5–6%. The overall impact of ship emissions on global methane lifetime is large due to the high NOx emissions. With regard to acidification we find that ships contribute 11% to nitrate wet deposition and 4.5% to sulphur wet deposition globally. In certain coastal regions the contributions may be in the range 15–50%. In general we find that ship emissions have a large impact on acidic deposition and surface ozone in western North America, Scandinavia, western Europe, western North Africa and Malaysia/Indonesia. For most of these regions container traffic, the largest emitter by ship type, has the largest impact. This is the case especially for the Pacific and the related container trade routes between Asia and North America. However, the contributions from bulk ships and tank vessels are also significant in the above mentioned impact regions. Though the total ship impact at low latitudes is lower, the tank vessels have a quite large contribution at low latitudes and near the Gulf of Mexico and Middle East. The bulk ships are characterized by large impact in Oceania compared to other ship types. In Scandinavia and north-western Europe, one of the major ship impact regions, the three largest ship types have rather small relative contributions. The impact in this region is probably dominated by smaller ships operating closer to the coast. For emissions in ports impacts on NO2 and SO2 seem to be of significance. For most ports the contribution to the two components is in the range 0.5–5%, for a few ports it exceeds 10%. The approach presented provides an improvement in characterizing fleet operational patterns, and thereby ship emissions and impacts. Furthermore, the study shows where emission reductions can be applied to most effectively minimize the impacts by different ship types.

Coprinus phaeosporus Karst., Hypholoma subericaceum (Fr.) Kühner, Mycena tubarioides (Maire) Kühner, and Stropharia pseudocyanea (Desm.) comb. nov. are documented from North America for the first time. Agaricus albocyaneus Desm. ex Fr. is shown to be an error for A. pseudocyaneus Desm. Agrocybe paludosa (Lange) Kühner & Romagnesi, Coprinus martinii Favre ex Orton and C. subimpatiens Lange & Smith are reported from Canada. Range extensions or new host records are noted for Coprinus stercoreus Fr., C. urticicola (Berk. & Br.) Buller, Marasmius limosus Quél., Melanotus caricicola (Orton) Guz., Mycena juncicola (Fr.) Gillet, Pholiota graminis (Quél.) Singer, and Resinomycena saccharifera (Berk. & Br.) comb. nov. Resinomycena kalalochensis subsp. saccharifera in Europe and subsp. kalalochensis (Smith) comb. nov. in western North America are vicariant taxa.

Slender Moonwort (Botrychium lineare), described in 1994, is a very rare fern in eastern North America. It was known in Quebec, Canada, from only two sites in the Gaspé Peninsula but has not been relocated since its discovery at these sites in 1902 and 1942. An ongoing study of B. lineare and its recent discovery in northern Minnesota prompted a re-examination of a 1972 collection made in western Quebec, in Gatineau Park, previously identified under various names, including B. campestre. A recent visit (2008) to the Gatineau Park site disclosed continued presence of similar plants. Based on morphological characters, spore size, genotype (allozyme electrophoresis), and appropriate habitat features, we conclude that the newly discovered plants and those of the 1972 collection are B. lineare. B. lineare appears on the Quebec government list of plant species likely to be designated threatened or vulnerable.

The Ptiliidae of the Maritime Provinces of Canada is surveyed. Twenty-nine new provincial records from the Maritime Provinces of Canada are reported including the first records of the family from Prince Edward Island. Fourteen species are recorded for the first time for the Maritime Provinces as a whole. Acrotrichis josephi (Matthews) is recorded for the first time in eastern North America and Acrotrichis haldemani (LeConte) is recorded for the first time in Canada. The genus Pteryx is reported for the first time in Canada. At least 29 species of Ptiliidae are now known to occur in the region. The fauna is briefly discussed in terms of its overall composition, introduced species, and species associated with particular habitats. Saproxylic species found in mature forests are discussed and attention is drawn to their possible relationship to undisturbed forest conditions and the scarcity of old-growth habitats in the region.

Invertebrates specialized for life in groundwater (stygobionts) are diverse and widely distributed in Europe but poorly known in North America. A survey of the invertebrate fauna at 14 sites in eastern North America shows that unglaciated ancient terrain in eastern North America contains a rich fauna of stygobionts. Several groups of stygobionts (the polychaete Troglochaetus sp., an undescribed genus of aphanoneuran annelid, a possibly undescribed family of oligochaetes, bathynellacean crustaceans, and microcerberid isopods) are reported for the first time from eastern North America. Stygobionts are infrequent north of the glacial border, suggesting that they have not yet been able to disperse into glaciated terrain. The extraordinarily slow dispersal rates implied by these distributions have important ecological ramifications. The few stygobionts found north of the glacial border may have survived glaciation in subglacial refugia.
