Debris avalanche impoundments of Squamish River, Mount Cayley area, southwestern British Columbia

Squamish River has been impounded temporarily by debris avalanches from Mount Cayley on numerous occasions. Evidence of these impoundments comes from backwater deposits and also from a cluster of in situ stumps protruding from a bar along Squamish River. Backwater deposits consist of both lacustrine and fluvial deposits that have formed within the low-energy depositional environment created by a river impoundment. Three main backwater deposits occur in the study area. The fan toe deposit is ~14 m thick and represents a single impoundment of Squamish River that likely formed behind a large ~4800 BP debris avalanche. In situ ~3200 BP stumps along Squamish River probably were killed by a river impoundment due to a debris avalanche. The upper terrace backwater deposit is ~6 m thick and forms an aggradational terrace along Squamish River which probably accumulated behind an ~1100 BP debris avalanche. The lower terrace deposit also forms an aggradational terrace along Squamish River but represents four or possibly five separate impoundments. These occurred between ~1100 BP and 1955 AD, and it seems likely that one of the deposits relates to an ~500 BP debris avalanche. Seven or eight Holocene impoundments of Squamish River have been identified in the study area.

ABSTRACTIon-beam sputtering (IBS) has been studied as a means for scalable, mask-less nanopatterning of surfaces. Patterning at the nanoscale has been achieved for numerous types of materials including: semiconductors, metals and insulators. Although much work has been focused on tailoring nanopatterning by systematic ion-beam parameter manipulation, limited work has addressed elucidating on the underlying mechanisms for self-organization of multi-component surfaces. In particular there has been little attention to correlate the surface chemistry variation during ion irradiation with the evolution of surface morphology and nanoscale self-organization. Moreover the role of surface impurities on patterning is not well known and characterization during the time-scale of modification remains challenging. This work summarizes an in-situ approach to characterize the evolution of surface chemistry during irradiation and its correlation to surface nanopatterning for a variety of multi-components surfaces. The work highlights the importance and role of surface impurities in nanopatterning of a surface during low-energy ion irradiation. In particular, it shows the importance of irradiation-driven mechanisms in GaSb(100) nanopatterning by low-energy ions and how the study of these systems can be impacted by oxide formation.

AbstractWe demonstrate a vacuum lithography process which uses a finely focused Ga ion beam to write the pattern which is then transferred to the InP pattern by low energy dry etching. Surface steps on the order of 1000-2000A in height, and lateral resolution limited only by size of the ion beam, can be efficiently prepared using moderate Ga ion fluences. The surfaces prepared by this process are damage free and suitable for epitaxial overgrowth. GaInAs/InP heterostructures grown on in-situ patterned substrates show excellent morphology and high luminescence efficiency.

The Guanshan Biota is an unusual early Cambrian Konservat-Lagerstätte from China and is distinguished from all other exceptionally preserved Cambrian biotas by the dominance of brachiopods and a relatively shallow depositional environment. However, the faunal composition, overturn and sedimentology associated with the Guanshan Biota are poorly understood. This study, based on collections through the best-exposed succession of the basal Wulongqing Formation at the Shijiangjun section, Wuding County, eastern Yunnan, China recovered six major animal groups with soft tissue preservation; brachiopods vastly outnumbered all other groups. Brachiopods quickly replace arthropods as the dominant fauna following a transgression at the base of the Wulongqing Formation. A transition from a botsfordiid-, eoobolid- and acrotretid- to an acrotheloid-dominated brachiopod assemblage occurs up-section. Four episodically repeated lithofacies reveal a relatively low-energy, offshore to lower shoreface sedimentary environment at the Shijiangjun section, which is very different from the Wulongqing Formation in the Malong and Kunming areas. Multiple event flows and rapid obrution are responsible for faunal overturn and fluctuation through the section. A detailed lithofacies and palaeontological investigation of this section provides a better understanding of the processes and drivers of faunal overturn during the later phase of the Cambrian Explosion.Supplementary material: Composition and comparison of the Malong Fauna and the Guanshan Biota is are available at: https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.c.5080799

Purpose The mainstay of treatment for ductal carcinoma in situ (dcis) involves surgery in the form of mastectomy or lumpectomy. Inconsistency in the use of endocrine therapy (et) for dcis is evident worldwide. We sought to assess the variation in et prescribing for patients with dcis across a population-based radiotherapy (rt) program and to identify variables that predict its use.Methods Data from a breast cancer database were obtained for women diagnosed with dcis in British Columbia from 2009 to 2014. Associations between et use and patient characteristics were assessed by chi-square test and multilevel multivariate logistic regression. The Kaplan–Meier method, with propensity score matching and Cox regression analysis, was used to assess the effects of et on overall survival (os) and relapse-free survival (rfs).Results For the 2336 dcis patients included in the study, et use was 13% in dcis patients overall, and 17% in patients with estrogen receptor–positive (er+) tumours treated with breast-conserving surgery and rt. Significant variation in et use by treatment centre was observed (range: 8%–23%; p < 0.001), and prescription of et by individual oncologists varied in the range 0%–40%. After controlling for confounding factors, age less than 50 years [odds ratio (or): 1.72; p = 0.01], treatment centre, er+ status (or: 5.33; p < 0.001), and rt use (or: 1.77; p < 0.001) were significant predictors of et use. No difference in os or rfs with the use of et was observed.Conclusions In this population-based analysis, 13% of patients with dcis in British Columbia received et, with variation by treatment centre (8%–23%) and individual oncologist (0%–40%). Age less than 50 years, er+ status, and rt use were most associated with et use.

In situ rare-earth element (REE) compositions have been measured in early vertebrate microremains from the Lower Devonian basin of Andrée Land (Svalbard), with the aim of obtaining information about their early depositional environment and potential reworking. Vertebrate microremains with different histology were used for the analyses, sourced from two different localities of marginal marine to freshwater sediments from geographically distant parts of the Grey Hœk Formation (Skamdalen and Tavlefjellet members). We selected thelodont and undescribed ?chondrichthyan scales, which allowed us to define potential taxonomic, histological, and taphonomic variables of the REE uptake. Results showed REE concentrations to be relatively uniform within the scales of each taxon, but apparent discrepancies were visible between the studied localities and separate taxa. The compilation of REE abundance patterns as well as REE ratios have revealed that thelodont and ?chondrichthyan originating from the same locality must have had different burial and early diagenetic histories. The shapes of the REE profiles, together with the presence and absence of the Eu and Ce anomalies, equally suggested different depositional and diagenetic environments for these two sympatric taxa resulting from either stratigraphical or long-distance reworking. The REE concentrations appear to have visible differences between separate dental tissues, particularly between enameloid and dentine of thelodonts, emphasizing the importance of in situ measurements in microfossil biomineral geochemistry.
