The stability constants of binary complexes of 1-canavanine (Can) and 1-arginine (Arg) with Ni2+ and Zn2+ have been calculated at 25 °C and at ionic strength μ = 0.1 (NaNO3). This technique is completed with spectrophotometry and circular dichroïsm measurements in the ultraviolet and visible ranges. Thus we determined the molar absorbances and the molar circular dichroïsm of ligands and complexes with Ni2+ and Zn2+. Concerning the nickel(II), these measurements display three complexes, NiL, NiL2, and NiL3. 1-Canavanine, which generally has a tridentate ligand behaviour, becomes a bidentate ligand in the Ni(Can)3 complex. With regard to zinc(II), this study only displays the ZnL and ZnL2 species. Key words: 1-arginine, 1-canavanine, circular dichroïsm, nickel binary coordination, zinc binary coordination.

The protonation constants of 1 -canavanine (Can) and its structural analogue 1-arginine (Arg) have been calculated at 25 °C and at ionic strength μ = 0.1 (NaNO3). Under the same conditions, the stability constants of the binary and ternary complexes with Cu(II) have been determined by potentiometry, spectrophotometry, and by circular dichroïsm in the visible region. A comparative study of these two amino acids allows us to differentiate the order of protonation of the three functional groups (carboxylic, amino, and guanidyl), mainly by the different modes of complexation with copper(II), which is found in an octahedral coordination: arginine behaves like a bidentate ligand (glycine type) whereas canavanine behaves like a tridentate ligand. Keywords: 1-arginine, 1-canavanine, circular dichroïsm, copper ternary coordination, potentiometry.

Stepwise stability constants have been determined for the 1:1 and 1:2 Eu3+:mandelate− and Eu3+:tartronate2− complexes in water. Measurements were made at low ionic strength and the temperature was 25 °C. The solvent-extraction–radiotracer method was used. For the mandelate system at an ionic strength of 0.104, K1 = 5.0 × 102, K2 = 1.58 × 102, and K1:K2 = 3.1. The K1:K2 ratios suggest monodentate ligandcy. The stepwise stability constants for the two stages of tartronate ion association are: K1 = 7.1 ( ± 15%) × 104 and K1K2 = 4.2 ( ± 5%) × 108. The magnitudes of the stability constants suggest that tartronate is a tridentate ligand. The stability constant ratios are discussed with reference to the ratios for piperidinedicarboxylate and iminodiacetate complexes.

Binary and ternary complexes of the type M-Y and M-X-Y [M = Mn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II); X = salicylidene-4-methoxyaniline and Y=5-bromosalicylidene-4-nitroaniline] have been examined pH-metrically at 27±0.5 °C and at constant ionic strength, μ= 0.1 M (KCl) in 75 : 25(v/v) 1,4-dioxne-water medium. The stability constants for binary (M-Y) and ternary (M-X-Y) systems were calculated. The relative stability (Δ log KT) values of the ternary complexes with corresponding binary complexes for all the metal(II) ions in the present study found to be negative indicating that ternary 1:1:1 (M-X-Y) complexes are less stable than binary 1:1 (M-Y) complexes. In the ternary system studied, the order of stability constants of mixed ligand complexes with respect to the metal ions was found to be Cu(II) > NI(II) > Mn(II) > Zn(II); which is same as in the corresponding binary (M-Y) systems.

The conformation of elastin-like peptides Boc-Ala-Pro-Gly-Val-APEGM, Boc-Ala-Pro-Gly-Val-Gly-Val-APEGM, Boc-Ala-Pro-Gly-Val-Ala-Pro-Gly-Val-Gly-Val-APEGM, Boc-Ala-Pro-Gly-Val-Gly-Val-Ala-Pro-Gly-Val-Gly-Val-APEGM were examined in solution using circular dichroism at 30 °C, 50 °C, and 70 °C and in solid state by IR at room temperature. The studies show that the β-turn is a significant conformational feature for peptides under investigation in solution at 30 °C and 50 °C, but at 70 °C the tetra, hexa, and decapeptides show the CD feature characteristic of the β-structure while the dodecapeptide spectra show the presence of β-turn which indicates the stability of the β-turn at this chain length. The IR spectra show that in the solid state at room temperature all investigated peptides assume essentially a β-turn except the tetrapeptide which present evidence of antiparallel β-structure. The β-turn contribution in the IR spectra increases with the increase of the chain length of the peptide.

Three Schiff-base hydrazones (ONN ? donors) were prepared by condensation of 2-amino-4-hydrazino-6-methylpyrimidine with 2-hydroxyacetophenone 2-methoxybenzaldehyde and diacetyl to yield 2-OHAHP, 2-OMeBHPand DHP respectively. The structures of these ligands were elucidated by elemental analysis, UV, IR, 1H-NMR and mass spectra. The metal?ligand stability constants of Mn2+, Fe3+,Co2+,Ni2+,Cu2+, Zn2+,Cd2+,UO22+ and Th4+ chelates were determined potentiometrically in two different media (75%(v/v) dioxane?water and ethanol?water) at 283, 293, 303 and 313 K at an ionic strength of 0.05 M (KNO3). The thermodynamic parameters of the 1:1 and 1:2 complexes were evaluated and are discussed. The dissociation constants of 2-OHAHP, 2-OMeBHP and DHPligands and the stability constants of Co2+, Ni2 and Cu2+ with 2-OHAHP were determined spectrophotometrically in 75 % (v/v) dioxane?water.

The far ultraviolet circular dichroism spectra of sheep β-lipotropic hormone (β-LPH) were recorded under different conditions of pH, temperature, salt concentration, and solvent composition. Results confirm the stability of the hormone in strong basic or acidic solutions; moreover, temperatures up to 50 °C do not seem to affect noticeably the conformation of β-LPH. However, increasing the NaCl concentration or addition of dioxane in the solution brings about a conformational transition of the chain, interpreted as an increase in the helical content. The method of Yang (Chen, Y. H., Yang, J. T. &Martinez, H. M. (1972) Biochemistry 11, 4120–4131) was used to compute the proportion of helical, β, and unordered forms of the hormone chain. The proportions are compared with those obtained from Fasman's predictive method (Chou, P. Y. &Fasman, G. D. (1974) Biochemistry 13, 211–221 and Chou, P. Y. &Fasman, G. D. (1974) Biochemistry 13, 222–245) based on the known amino acid sequence of β-LPH.

The interaction of Sc(III), Y(III), and La(III) ions with 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) has been investigated, using the potentiometric method at 25   and  M KNO3. Collected potentiometric data were processed by the “BEST” software program to establish the complexation model for each system. SPE software program was used to evaluate the concentration distributions of the species formed in solution. The stability constants for the binary complexes increased as the ionic radii of the metal cations decreased.

Binary complexes of tartaric acid with lanthanide(III) ions were investigated. The studies have been performed in aqueous solution using the potentiometric method with computer analysis of the data for detection of the complexes set, determination of the stability constants of these compounds. The mode of the coordination of complexes found was determined using spectroscopy, which shows: Infrared, circular dichroism, ultraviolet, visible as well as luminescence spectroscopy. The overall stability constants of the complexes as well as the equilibrium constants of the reaction were determined. Analysis of the equilibrium constants of the reactions and spectroscopic data allowed the effectiveness of the carboxyl groups in the process of complex formation.

The stability constants of binary and ternary complexes [MA], [Ma2], and [MAL] (where M = Zn(II) or Cd(II); A = glycylglycine, glycyl L-alanine, glycyl L-leucine; L = α-alanine phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan, or L-histidine) in aqueous medium have been determined potentometrically at 25 °C and an ionic strength of 0.2 M NaClO4 (0.2 mol dm−3) using a computer system. It is observed that Δ log K of MAL complexes has low negative or positive values. Probable reasons have been discussed.
