The affinity of the polyether ionophore salinomycin to bind IA/IB metal ions was accessed using the Gibbs free energy of the competition reaction between SalNa (taken as a reference) and its rival ions: [M+-solution] + [SalNa] → [SalM] + [Na+-solution] (M = Li, K, Rb, Cs, Cu, Ag, Au). The DFT/PCM computations revealed that the ionic radius, charge density and accepting ability of the competing metal cations, as well as the dielectric properties of the solvent, have an influence upon the selectivity of salinomycin. The optimized structures of the monovalent metal complexes demonstrate the flexibility of the ionophore, allowing the coordination of one or two water ligands in SalM-W1 and SalM-W2, respectively. The metal cations are responsible for the inner coordination sphere geometry, with coordination numbers spread between 2 (Au+), 4 (Li+ and Cu+), 5/6 (Na+, K+, Ag+), 6/7 (Rb+) and 7/8 (Cs+). The metals’ affinity to salinomycin in low-polarity media follows the order of Li+ > Cu+ > Na+ > K+ > Au+ > Ag+ > Rb+ > Cs+, whereas some derangement takes place in high-dielectric environment: Li+ ≥ Na+ > K+ > Cu+ > Au+ > Ag+ > Rb+ > Cs+.

In recent time, various kinds of young brown (low-rank) coals are utilized increasingly not only as fuels, but also as valuable materials in advanced environmental applications. It should be noted in this context that significant deposits of the young brown coals can be found both in the Czech Republic as well as in Slovakia. For their effective applications e.g. in wastewater treatment or in soil remediation, the properties of the coals should be studied in more details and numerous physico-chemical characteristics should be measured. As a part of a common Czech-Slovak project, a series of various kinds of coals was collected, including North-Bohemian oxihumolites, lignite from South Moravia and several lignites from Slovakia (Baňa Zahorie). Basic properties were measured, such as acid-base titration curves, contents of main functional groups and sorption capability towards heavy metal cations (Cu2+, Zn2+, Co2+) and some organic pollutants. The contents of humic substances – main active constituents of the young coals – were also determined. Selected environmental applications of the brown coals will be mentioned further, e.g. for the removal of metal cations from waters or in phytoremediation of contaminated soils.

Transition metal cations are required for the function of many proteins but can mediate toxicity when present in excess. Identifying transporters that facilitate metal ion export, the conditions under which they are expressed, and the role they play in bacterial physiology is an evolving area of interest for environmental and pathogenic organisms.

In real soils the interaction of humic substances with clay minerals often occurs with the participation of metal cations. The adsorption of fulvic acids (FA) solution and their solutions in the presence of heavy metal ions (Pb or Zn) on two clay minerals (kaolinite and bentonite) was investigated by measurement of the optical density changes in the of equilibrium solutions. The FA adsorption by bentonite at the concentrations 0.05–1 g/L proceeds according to the polymolecular mechanism and has a stepwise character. The adsorption of FA on kaolinite can be described by the mechanism of monomolecular adsorption. In three-component systems, including FA, trace element ions and a clay mineral, complex processes occur, including the formation of complexes and salts and their adsorption. The sorption of colored complexes of FA with Pb on the surface of kaolinite and bentonite increases with increasing metal concentrations (0.5–2 mmol/L). The interaction of the FA-Zn2+ compounds with bentonite is a more complicated process—adsorption takes place at the lowest concentration used only. Thus, binding of FA by clay minerals in the presence of metal cations is a complex phenomenon due to the chemical heterogeneity of FA, different properties of metals, characteristics of mineral surfaces and the variability of environmental conditions.

The first metal-organic framework (MOF) built from a combination of metal cations, neutral azole ligands and sulphate anions, [Cu2(DHBDI)3(SO4)2]n (1, DHBDI = 1H,5H-benzo[1,2-d:4,5-d’]diimidazole), was synthesized. MOF 1 exhibits good chemical...

A new co-polymer based on fragments of 2-(2-pyridyl)monoazatriphenylene and 2,5-bis (2-ethylhexyl)-3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione was prepared by using the Sonogashira reaction. The photophysical properties of the polymer were studied. The presence of a strong bathochromic shift of the absorption and emission maxima in comparison with the previously described monomer units is shown. The polymer exhibits an intense “turn-off” response toward Cu2+ cations.

This review presents the examples of fluorescent sensors for metal cations based on a 1,8-naphthalimide optical platform and covers the main advances in this field for the last decade. The mechanisms of the generation of an optical signal are discussed in detail. Special attention is given to the authors' own works.
