Structural analogies for hybrid discrete-continuum systems of deformable bodies coupled with non-linear layers

This paper presents a procedure for evaluating the collision response of fixed offshore structures exposed to high energy collisions with Offshore Service Vessels (OSV) or other floating units. A combination of traditional non-linear frame analyses for screening purposes and more detailed non-linear FE analyses using an explicit code is proposed. In the detailed integrated FE analyses, both the fixed offshore structure and the impacting vessel are explicitly modeled as deformable bodies. The progressive changes in contact and the resistance of both deforming objects are fully accounted for, enabling for more accurate results compared to methods where the resistances of the two objects are assessed separately. Results from case studies are shown. The calculated resistances for the striking objects are compared to the load-indentation curves presented in DNV-RP-C204 [1] and NORSOK N-004 [2].

AbstractWe consider non-linear plane gravitational waves as propagating space-time defects, and construct the Burgers vector of the waves. In the context of classical continuum systems, the Burgers vector is a measure of the deformation of the medium, and at a microscopic (atomic) scale, it is a naturally quantized object. One purpose of the present article is ultimately to probe an alternative way on how to quantize plane gravitational waves.

This paper presents the weak formulation of a quasi-static evolution model for two deformable bodies with uni-directional adhesive unilateral contact on which external loads act. Small deformations and linearized elastoplasticity with hardening are assumed. The adhesion component is rate-dependent or rate-independent according to the choice of the viscosity coefficient of the glue; elastoplasticity is considered rate-independent. The weak formulation is expressed as a doubly non-linear problem with unbounded multivalued operators, as a function of internal and boundary displacements, plastic and symmetric strain tensors, and the bonding field and its gradient. This paper differs from other formulations by coupling the equations defined inside and on the boundary of the solids in functional form. In addition to this novelty, we verify the existence of solutions by a path other than that displayed in similar articles. The existence of solutions is demonstrated after considering a succession of doubly non-linear problems with an unbounded operator, and verifying that the solution of one of the problems is also a solution to the objective problem. The proof is supported by previous results from non-linear Partial differential equations theory with monotone operators.

(Ed. note: The custom in these Symposia has been to have a summary-introductory presentation which lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours, during which discussion from the floor is minor and usually directed at technical clarification. The remainder of the session is then devoted to discussion of the whole subject, oriented around the summary-introduction. The preceding session, I-A, at Nice, followed this pattern. Christy suggested that we might experiment in his presentation with a much more informal approach, allowing considerable discussion of the points raised in the summary-introduction during its presentation, with perhaps the entire morning spent in this way, reserving the afternoon session for discussion only. At Varenna, in the Fourth Symposium, several of the summaryintroductory papers presented from the astronomical viewpoint had been so full of concepts unfamiliar to a number of the aerodynamicists-physicists present, that a major part of the following discussion session had been devoted to simply clarifying concepts and then repeating a considerable amount of what had been summarized. So, always looking for alternatives which help to increase the understanding between the different disciplines by introducing clarification of concept as expeditiously as possible, we tried Christy's suggestion. Thus you will find the pattern of the following different from that in session I-A. I am much indebted to Christy for extensive collaboration in editing the resulting combined presentation and discussion. As always, however, I have taken upon myself the responsibility for the final editing, and so all shortcomings are on my head.)
