Abstract Contemporary Hong Kong is riven by serious political and social polarization. Hong Kong's problem does not lie in ideological differences among citizens; rather, the major issue is that people of different political stripes view each other as enemies. In this study, we conducted two experiments to compare the impacts of deliberation and discussion on political depolarization. In study 1, we invited participants of opposing views toward the Article 23 legislation and conducted a 90-min discussion session. The participants were divided into two groups: deliberation and causal discussion. The deliberation group received an information booklet on the issue and had to strictly follow rules of deliberation whereas the causal discussion group had no such stimuli. In study 2, we used video recordings from study 1 and presented the videos to two groups of participants. One group of participants watched the deliberation video and the other group watched the causal discussion video. The main finding of the study is both deliberation and causal discussion had mixed effects on reducing political polarization. After discussion, issue attitude and issue polarization remained largely the same, but people's attitude toward others with opposing views became more favorable and affective polarization was reduced. No systematic differences were found between deliberation and discussion. And watching discussion and deliberation will deliver similar effects but to a lesser extent.

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic has stripped many medical students worldwide of their right to quality education. In response, we developed hybrid courses involving aspects of both online and in-person teaching for radiation oncology medical student clerkship. Methods We entitled students to customize their own rotation schedule using Google Forms and developed a flipped learning online class, which consisted of at least one video clip on basic knowledge of radiation oncology per day (yonsei-radonc.com). Students were instructed to watch online videos before the next day’s discussion session. Required components of the medical education program (e.g., target drawing, site visits to treatment facilities) were also prepared and conducted in accordance with the appropriate level of social distancing measures. Finally, we conducted questionnaire surveys after the completion of the week-long course and clerkship. Results From March to June 2020, 110 fourth-year medical students undertook a clinical module in our 1-week radiation oncology program course. Each day, students completed the flipped learning prior to meeting with the educator and then participated in the online discussion session and conference. All activities were well performed as scheduled. Students’ motivation was high, as was their overall satisfaction with the course. The students were satisfied with the online contents, flipped learning strategy, and instructors. Conclusions We successfully integrated open and virtual educational platforms to improve access to and satisfaction with student clerkship. In the future “new normal,” minimized face-to-face learning interactions, such as flipped learning, should be actively utilized for medical and other students’ education.

The Taklim assembly is a forum for the community in order to gain knowledge about Islam, which is more open and usually carried out routinely. Therefore, the delivery of da'wah must also be adjusted to the local conditions of the community, the aim of which is to be easily understood and accepted by the community itself. This research will describe the role of the taklim assembly in increasing the religiosity of the community, how enthusiastic the community is in the taklim assembly, and what books are used as references in delivering their da'wah. This research is categorized in the type of qualitative-descriptive research with the methods of observation, interviews, and documentation, which in the future is expected to obtain more comprehensive data. The results of this study indicate that: 1) the taklim assembly, especially in the Suci-Panti Village, plays an important role for the community itself as in terms of religiosity which is basically reflected in the practice of aqidah, sharia, and morals (faith, Islam, and ihsan). In the taklim assembly which is held every Monday night Tuesday, it gets a very good response from the community, even the community is very enthusiastic when the study takes place, besides that in the assembly a discussion session is held. 2). The books that are used as references in the assembly consist of; aqidatul awam, mabadi'ul fiqhiyah, and lubabul hadith, which are discussed in depth.

The number of corruption cases that occur in Indonesia is not sufficiently countered by repressive means. Preventive measures must also be synergized. The most appropriate effort is to instill anti-corruption values in the younger generation, including high school students. The existence of the Student Council at SMA Negeri 2 Kota Tanjungpinang has an important role in grounding and implementing these values in the school environment. This service was carried out by using the methods of lecturing, discussion, and brainstorming. The results show that the activity has succeeded in achieving its stated goals. This was evidenced by the enthusiasm and high response from the participants. In addition, OSIS SMA Negeri 2 Kota Tanjungpinang has been agreed to become an anti-corruption based OSIS. As astep first, the programs initiated in the discussion session were determined as part of the OSIS work program for SMA Negeri 2 Kota Tanjungpinang.

Using conversation analysis as the research approach, this study explores how L2 learners utilize their task-related identities during task interactions and how those identities are used as resources for task management. Eight students in an ESL academic reading class formed two groups while they did their reading circle task for six rounds. In each round, the students took turns to be in charge of a specific role in the discussion session (i.e., discussion leader, notetaker, vocabulary definer, and contextualizer). Data was collected from all rounds and analyzed for emerging patterns. Results showed that (a) the participants used each other’s assigned identities skillfully to orient the group to the institutional goal, and (b) the participants used their own existing obligations to problematize the task interactions. By providing insights on those dynamic task-related identities, this study broadens our understanding of interactions happening at the task implementation stage and suggests pedagogical implications.
