AbstractA mathematics textbook can be described as an officially authorized and pedagogically designed mathematics book written to provide mathematical knowledge to students. This description suggests the authority of the textbook - because it has been authorized by an administrative source and because it deals with authorized knowledge. This paper provides an overview of research on mathematics textbooks. The emphasis is on questions concerning the extent to which and how textbooks are used in mathematics education in Croatia and in the world.Research results show that mathematics textbooks are widely used in mathematics education worldwide. This finding points to the need for research on the content and structure of textbooks. Such studies are combined with the associated results on how textbooks are used in the classroom and which methods teachers apply in using textbooks in mathematics education. The results of the empirical studies show that teachers use textbooks for lesson preparation and pupils use mathematics textbooks for exercises to a great extent. These results imply that such an important role of textbooks in mathematics education deserves additional attention, with the goal of understanding and improving mathematics education.

Research journals likeJRMEplay key roles through the publication of peerreviewed research, and it is through such publications that the field has the potential to grow. The metaphor of a growing tree is a useful one to explore in the context of mathematics education research. Growth in the natural world is generally multidimensional. A tree's growth is measured not only in terms of its height but also in terms of the girth of its trunk, the spread of its branches, and the development of a substantial root system, all of which are essential for the tree's continued growth and survival. Soil nutrients need to be replenished, and without sufficient moisture, growth is arrested, and the tree becomes stunted. Many of the most interesting natural landscapes include a range of tree species as well as supporting undergrowth.

This research was the qualitative research that aimed to improve students understanding of junior high mathematics study. In accordance with the object to be studied, then this research is done in 3 times open class consisting of the plan, do, and see for each cycle, with the subject of research was the students of mathematics education department of FKIP UNIPA whom contracting subjects junior mathematics studies. To improve students understanding of the material, implementation of peer tutor methods was continuously modified based on the findings of each cycle. Based on the results of the implementation of Lesson Study as much as 3 cycles obtained the concluded that the learning outcomes of learners used peer tutor approach that modified each cycle has a significant increase. This was evident from students who answered the test correctly given at the end of each meeting. In the first cycle, from 27 students only 4 who can answer the test correctly that is equal to 14.81%, the second cycle, from 27 learners only 10 which was able to answer the test correctly that was equal to 37,04%, whereas in cycle III, from 26 students 21 students able to answer correctly that was equal to 80,77%

The years after WWII up to the late 1960s were crucial in the evolution of ICMI (International Commission on Mathematical Instruction) for both the settlement of some institutional aspects (mainly concerning the relationship with mathematicians) and the establishment of new trends of the activities. By referring to unpublished documents, this paper focuses on the role of two key figures in those years: Heinrich Behnke and Hans Freudenthal. As ICMI Secretary and later as President, Behnke tried to reshape the newborn ICMI after WWII and clarify the relationship with mathematicians. His action was completed by Freudenthal, who, as ICMI President, broke with the past and promoted initiatives that fostered the development of mathematics education as an academic field and the independence of ICMI from the community of mathematicians. Keywords: history, ICMI, mathematicians, mathematics education
