The gauging of isometries in general sigma-models which include fermionic terms which represent the interaction of strings with background Yang-Mills fields is considered. Gauging is possible only if certain obstructions are absent. The quantum gauge anomaly is discussed, and then the (1, 0) supersymmetric generalization of the gauge action given.

The (4,4) supersymmetric dual gauge action of the two-dimensional (4,4) super-Yang–Mills theory is constructed and the corresponding gauge anomaly is expressed. The Abelian and non-Abelian T duality of the two-dimensional (4,4) supersymmetric sigma model are discussed.

We study two-dimensional sigma models where the chiral deformation diminished the original [Formula: see text] supersymmetry to the chiral one, [Formula: see text]. Such heterotic models were discovered previously on the world sheet of non-Abelian stringy solitons supported by certain four-dimensional [Formula: see text] theories. We study geometric aspects and holomorphic properties of these models, and derive a number of exact expressions for the [Formula: see text] functions in terms of the anomalous dimensions analogous to the NSVZ [Formula: see text] function in four-dimensional Yang-Mills. Instanton calculus provides a straightforward method for the derivation.

A geometrical derivation of the Faddeev-Popov measure is presented. This derivation is valid in any gauge for a general class of gauge theories, including Yang-Mills theory, gravitation and non-linear sigma models, and can easily be generalized to include supersymmetric theories. We stress the role of a non-trivial, finite contribution to the effective action from the invariant measure on the orbit over each point in the physical configuration space.

The generalized N=2 tensor multiplets are defined and the corresponding interacting models are constructed in N=2 superspace in four dimensions. The couplings with the N=2 Yang-Mills fields are given too. The two-dimensional nonlinear N=4 supersymmetric sigma models obtained via dimensional reduction are known to be finite. The construction gives rise to a variety of explicitly constructed quaternionic-Kähler metrics. Some two-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric sigma models with nonvanishing torsion turn out to be equivalent to the ordinary N=4 hyper-Kähler nonlinear sigma models without torsion.
