A geometrical derivation of the Faddeev-Popov measure is presented. This derivation is valid in any gauge for a general class of gauge theories, including Yang-Mills theory, gravitation and non-linear sigma models, and can easily be generalized to include supersymmetric theories. We stress the role of a non-trivial, finite contribution to the effective action from the invariant measure on the orbit over each point in the physical configuration space.

The quantum description of non-linear systems finds a deep obstruction in the Canonical Quantization framework and Non-Linear Sigma Models constitute the best representatives. In this paper, we face the quantization of such systems on the grounds of a Group Approach to Quantization, and extend the algorithm to the specific case of massive Non-Abelian gauge theories. The basic geometric structures behind are the so-called "jet-gauge groups".

The supersymmetric extensions of anti-symmetric tensor gauge theories and their associated tensor gauge symmetry transformations are constructed. The classical equivalence between such supersymmetric tensor gauge theories and supersymmetric non-linear sigma models is established. The global symmetry of the supersymmetric tensor gauge theory is gauged and the locally invariant action is obtained. The supercurrent on the Kähler manifold is found in terms of the supersymmetric tensor gauge field.

Abstract We explore 6d (1, 0) superconformal field theories with SU(3) and SU(2) gauge symmetries which cascade after Higgsing to the E-string theory on a single M5 near an E8 wall. Specifically, we study the 2d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (0, 4) gauge theories which describe self-dual strings of these 6d theories. The self-dual strings can be also viewed as instanton string solitons of 6d Yang-Mills theories. We find the 2d anomaly-free gauge theories for self-dual strings, amending the naive ADHM gauge theories which are anomalous, and calculate their elliptic genera. While these 2d theories respect the flavor symmetry of each 6d SCFT only partially, their elliptic genera manifest the symmetry fully as these functions as BPS index are invariant in strongly coupled IR limit. Our consistent 2d (0, 4) gauge theories also provide new insights on the non-linear sigma models for the instanton strings, providing novel UV completions of the small instanton singularities. Finally, we construct new 2d quiver gauge theories for the self-dual strings in 6d E-string theory for multiple M5-branes probing the E8 wall, and find their fully refined elliptic genera.

A joint introduction of composite and background fields into non-Abelian quantum gauge theories is suggested based on the symmetries of the generating functional of Green’s functions, with the systematic analysis focused on quantum Yang–Mills theories, including the properties of the generating functional of vertex Green’s functions (effective action). For the effective action in such theories, gauge dependence is found in terms of a nilpotent operator with composite and background fields, and on-shell independence from gauge fixing is established. The basic concept of a joint introduction of composite and background fields into non-Abelian gauge theories is extended to the Volovich–Katanaev model of two-dimensional gravity with dynamical torsion, as well as to the Gribov–Zwanziger theory.

We elaborate on our previous work on (N=2)-supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. In particular, we show how to explicitly determine the low energy quantum effective action for G=SU(3) from the underlying hyperelliptic Riemann surface, and calculate the leading instanton corrections. This is done by solving Picard-Fuchs equations and asymptotically evaluating period integrals. We find that the dynamics of the SU(3) theory is governed by an Appell system of type F4, and compute the exact quantum gauge coupling explicitly in terms of Appell functions.

Non-perturbative Green functions for gauge invariant variables are considered. The Green functions are found to be modified as compared with the usual ones in a definite gauge because of a physical configuration space (PCS) reduction. In the Yang-Mills theory with fermions, this phenomenon follows from the Singer theorem about the absence of a global gauge condition for the fields tending to zero at spatial infinity.

The geometrical structure of the noncompact, nonhomogeneous Kähler sigma models arising from supersymmetric gauge theories is described. Topics discussed include the choice of target manifold for the sigma model, the supersymmetric vacuum alignment problem and the nature of chiral symmetry breaking, the role of isometry anomalies, the construction of the Kähler potential and metric, and the embedding of the conventional compact coset space sigma model in the supersymmetric Kähler model.
