A novel dmit 2- complex: [ C 7 H 7( C 2 H 5)3 N ][ Ni ( dmit )2], abbreviated as BTEANDT, was synthesized and its third-order nonlinear optical properties were investigated by Z-scan technique at the wavelength of 1064 nm with laser duration of 20 ps. A self-focusing effect and a saturable absorption were observed. The nonlinear refraction coefficient n2 and the nonlinear absorption coefficient β have been found to be 7.311 × 10-18 m 2/W and -6.064 cm/GW when I0=3.025 GW/cm2. The intensity dependence curve of β was also studied and the result reveals that β is proportional to I0. We explained the result with the theory of absorption cross-section.

Three 1,3-dithiole-2-thioxo-4,5-dithiolato compounds, ethyltriphenylphosphonium bis(2-thioxo-1.3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato)aurate(III) (TPEPADT), benzyltriethylamine bis(2-thioxo-1.3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato)aurate(III) (BTEAADT) and benzyltriethylamine bis(2-thioxo-1.3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato)nickel(III) (BTEANDT), were synthesized and the BTEAADT-doped PMMA thin film (BD film) and TPEPADT-doped PMMA thin film (TD film) with mass fraction of 1% were prepared by spin-coating method. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of thin films and three compounds in acetonitrile solutions were investigated by using the laser [Formula: see text]-scan technique with 20 ps pulses at 1064 nm. The [Formula: see text]-scan spectra revealed that TPEPADT and BTEAADT exhibited self-defocusing effect and negligible nonlinear absorption, but BTEANDT exhibited self-focusing effect and stronger saturable absorption. The reason for this difference was analyzed. The magnitudes of third-order nonlinear refractive indices and third-order nonlinear susceptibility were [Formula: see text], 10[Formula: see text] esu for the solution samples and [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] esu for thin films. All these results suggest that these materials are promising candidates for application in the nonlinear optical area at infrared band.

A novel tree-like nano-cadmium sulfide (CdS) with the fractal feature is synthesized by solid-state reaction at room temperature from complex precursor with aminotrimethylenephosphonic acid (ATMP) as ligand. The obtained sample is the crystalline cubic beta cadmium sulfide. The tree is composed of nanorods with an average diameter of ca. 95 nm and a length of up to 100–650 nm. The nanorods grow in the asymmetrical "Y" shape. The amount of ATMP plays an important role in the formation of fractal structure. Nonlinear optical (NLO) measurements by the Z-scan technique exhibit that the tree-like fractal nano- CdS has the third-order nonlinear optical properties of both NLO absorption and NLO refraction with self-focusing effect and the optical limiting performance.

AbstractCompounds WCu2OS3(PPh3)4 (I) and MoCu2OS3(PPh3)3 (II) were synthesized by reactions of (NH4)2MO2S2 (M = W, Mo), Cu2S and PPh3 in solid state for nonlinear optical studies. A wide transparent window (λ = 400 - 1000 nm) was observed for both clusters, which makes them attractive for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. NLO properties of the clusters were studied with a 7-ns pulsed laser at 532 nm. Cluster I exhibits mainly optical self-focusing (n2 = 8 × 10-18 m2 W-1, as measured with an 1.2 × 10-4 M acetonitrile solution) with negligibly small nonlinear absorption. Cluster II exhibits both optical self-focusing (n2 = 5 × 10-17 m2 W-1, as measured with a 7.4 × 10-5 M acetonitrile solution) and nonlinear absorption (α2 = 2.6 × 10-10 m W-1). The third-order NLO susceptibilities (χ(3)) of the two clusters at the above-mentioned concentrations are 2 × 10-11 esu for I and 1.2 × 10-10 esu for II respectively. These nonlinear optical properties of the clusters were compared with those of cubic cage shaped and nest shaped clusters to reveal a qualitative structure/NLO property correlation.

Films with alternating layers containing anionic tetracarboxylic copper phthalocyanine [ CuPc(COONa)4 ] and cationic polydiallydimethylammonium chloride (PDDA) were fabricated by electrostatic self-assembled layer-by-layer (LBL) technique. The delicate structure of the film was characterized by a series of techniques. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of the film were measured by the Z-scan technique with laser duration of 4 ns and 21 ps at the wavelength of 532 nm. The film exhibited excellent nonlinear absorption and self-focusing effect. The second-order molecular hyperpolarizability γ value of the film was much larger than that of CuPc(COONa)4 aqueous solution under the irradiation of whether ns or ps pulses. A series of damage experiments of the film for the intense laser pulses were conducted to prove the reliability of the experimental results under the conditions.

The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of P3HT in orthodichlorobenzene were investigated at 532[Formula: see text]nm by Z-scan technique in the nanosecond domain. The nonlinear refraction of P3HT solution is up to an order of 10[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]esu and changes the sign from positive to negative with an increase in the input intensity. The reverse saturable absorption of the P3HT solution was observed in the intensity range of the measurements and their nonlinear absorption coefficient reaches an order of 102[Formula: see text]cm/GW. The strong optical nonlinearity perhaps allows them to be widely applied in the photoelectric field.

In this study, 8-(4-methoxyphenyl)-6-oxo-3-p-tolyl-6H-pyrido[1,2-b][1,2,4]triazine-7,9-dicarbonitrile (A) was prepared and then the nonlinear optical properties of this compound, including nonlinear refractive index (n2) and nonlinear absorption coefficient (β) were measured using Z-scan technique by continuous wave laser diode at wavelengths of 405 and 532 nm. At wavelength of 532 nm, by increasing the incident intensity a switch over from saturable absorption (SA) to reverse saturable absorption (RSA) was observed. The results showed that the nonlinear optical properties of this compound depend on the wavelength. It was also observed that with decreasing incident intensity, the thermal nonlinear refractive coefficient increased accordingly, while its thermo-optic coefficient decreased. In addition, the third-order susceptibility of this compound in wavelength of 532 nm was obtained higher than 405 nm.

The strong nonlinear optical behavior of low-dimensional materials, such as quantum dots and core-shell quantum dots, has been a topic of intense research in recent years. As quantum dots have tunable emission via changes in their sizes, they are potentially useful in photo-electronics, photovoltaic nonlinear optics, light-emitting diode fabrication, and laser protections. Variation among core and shell shape and size, along with the chemical composition of quantum dots, define their enhanced nonlinear optical properties. Some specific nonlinear optical properties, such as nonlinear refraction, optical limiting, saturable absorption, reverse saturable absorption of CdTe and CdSe quantum dots (QDs), as well as core-shell QDs and their applications, were assessed in this paper.
