This paper proposes a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM)-based markerless mobile-end tracking registration algorithm to address the problem of virtual image drift caused by fast camera motion in mobile-augmented reality (AR). The proposed algorithm combines the AGAST-FREAK-SLAM algorithm with inertial measurement unit (IMU) data to construct a scene map and localize the camera’s pose. The extracted feature points are matched with feature points in a map library for real-time camera localization and precise registration of virtual objects. Experimental results show that the proposed method can track feature points in real time, accurately construct scene maps, and locate cameras; moreover, it improves upon the tracking and registration robustness of earlier algorithms.

This paper proposes an interaction method to conveniently manipulate a virtual object by combining touch interaction and head movements for a head-mounted display (HMD), which provides mobile augmented reality (AR). A user can conveniently manipulate a virtual object with touch interaction recognized from the inertial measurement unit (IMU) attached to the index finger’s nail and head movements tracked by the IMU embedded in the HMD. We design two interactions that combine touch and head movements, to manipulate a virtual object on a mobile HMD. Each designed interaction method manipulates virtual objects by controlling ray casting and adjusting widgets. To evaluate the usability of the designed interaction methods, a user evaluation is performed in comparison with the hand interaction using Hololens. As a result, the designed interaction method receives positive feedback that virtual objects can be manipulated easily in a mobile AR environment.

A software architecture codifies the design choices of software developers, which defines a modularorganizational spine for the design of a software artefact. Different architectures may bespecified for different types of artefacts, a real-time interactive artefact, for example, wouldhave markedly different requirements to those of a batch based transactional system. The use ofsoftware architecture becomes increasingly important as the complexity ofartefacts increases. Augmented Reality blends the real world observed through a computerinterface, with a computer generated virtual world. With the advent ofpowerful mobile devices, Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR)applications have become increasingly feasible, however the increased power hasled to increased complexity. Most MAR research has been directed towardstechnologies and not design resulting in a dearth of architecture and design literature for MAR. This research is targeted at addressing this void. The main requirement that a MAR architecture must meet isidentified as being the efficient real-time processing of data streams such asvideo frames and sensor data. A set of highly parallelised architecturalpatterns are documented within the context of MAR that meet thisrequirement. The contribution of this research is a software architecture, codifiedas architectural patterns, for MAR.

Abstract. In this research, we investigate the use of Reinforcement Learning (RL) for an effective and robust solution for exploring unknown and indoor environments and reconstructing their maps. We benefit from a Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithm for real-time robot localization and mapping. Three different reward functions are compared and tested in different environments with growing complexity. The performances of the three different RL-based path planners are assessed not only on the training environments, but also on an a priori unseen environment to test the generalization properties of the policies. The results indicate that RL-based planners trained to maximize the coverage of the map are able to consistently explore and construct the maps of different indoor environments.
