Palamás, Echevete y yo o el lago asfaltado (Palamás, Echevete and I or the asphalted lake), Mexican Diego Cañedo’s second novel (1945), elaborates the time travel to the Mexican past. The sci-fi theme of the novel sustains a social criticism, and imitates H. G. Wells’ The Time Machine plot. In this essay, the sociocritical part of Cañedo’s work is studied, on one hand, because it seems to respond to the social problems of the period 1934-1946; and, on the other hand, because the relations established with Wells’ novel.

This article is devoted to analysing and interpreting nostalgic objects in contemporary culture. Video and Walkman have changed the way we listen to music and watch films. It is worth mentioning that contemporary Polish writers often come back to their childhood and describe objects that were important in their existence, such cassettes of their favorites artists and actors. Nostalgia is a crucial feeling in their writings and a result of the digital age we are living in. Walkman and video resemble an analogue time machine taking one back to a period when the past was written in objects.

Abstract Suppression or mitigation of edge-localized mode (ELM) crashes is necessary for ITER. The strategy to suppress all the ELM crashes by the resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) should be applied as soon as the first low-to-high confinement (L-H) transition occurs. A control algorithm based on real-time machine learning (ML) enables such an approach: it classifies the H-mode transition and the ELMy phase in real-time and automatically applies the preemptive RMP. This paper reports the algorithm design, which is now implemented in the KSTAR plasma-control system, and the corresponding experimental demonstration of typical high-δ KSTAR H-mode plasmas. As a result, all initial ELM crashes are suppressed with an acceptable safety factor at the edge (q95) and with RMP field adjustment. Moreover, the ML-driven ELM-crash-suppression discharges remain stable without further degradation due to the regularization of the plasma pedestal.

Abstract We study the relationship between the quantization of a massless scalar field on the two-dimensional Einstein cylinder and in a spacetime with a time machine. We find that the latter picks out a unique prescription for the state of the zero mode in the Einstein cylinder. We show how this choice arises from the computation of the vacuum Wightman function and the vacuum renormalized stress-energy tensor in the time-machine geometry. Finally, we relate the previously proposed regularization of the zero mode state as a squeezed state with the time-machine warp parameter, thus demonstrating that the quantization in the latter regularizes the quantization in an Einstein cylinder.
