A METHODOLOGY FOR MODELING MULTI-AGENT SYSTEMS USING NESTED PETRI NETS

In the past two decades, multi-agent systems have emerged as a new paradigm for conceptualizing large and complex distributed software systems. Even though there are many conceptual frameworks for using multi-agent systems, there is no well established and widely accepted method for the representation of multi-agent systems. We adapt a well-known formal model, predicate transition nets, to include the notions of dynamic structure, agent communication and coordination to address the representation problems. This paper presents a comprehensive methodology for modeling multi-agents based on the extensions. We demonstrate our modeling approach with an example. Several case studies on different application domains from our previous works are also discussed.

The work is devoted to solve allocation task problem in multi agents systems using multi-objective genetic algorithms and comparing the technique with methods used in game theories. The paper shows the main advantages of genetic algorithms and the way to apply a parallel approach dividing the population in sub-populations saving time in the search and expanding the coverage of the solution in the Pareto optimal space.

Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) architectures are gaining popularity over traditional ones for building open, distributed, and evolving software required by today’s corporate IT applications such as e-business systems, Web services or enterprise knowledge bases. Since the fundamental concepts of multi-agent systems are social and intentional rather than object, functional, or implementation-oriented, the design of MAS architectures can be eased by using social-driven templates. They are detailed agent-oriented design idioms to describe MAS architectures as composed of autonomous agents that interact and coordinate to achieve their intentions, like actors in human organizations. This paper presents social patterns, as well as organizational styles, and focuses on a framework aimed to gain insight into these templates. The framework can be integrated into agent-oriented software engineering methodologies used to build MAS. We consider the Broker social pattern to illustrate the framework. The mapping from system architectural design (through organizational architectural styles), to system detailed design (through social patterns), is overviewed with a data integration case study. The automation of patterns design is also overviewed.

This article addresses an extension of the knowledge modeling approaches, namely to multi-agent systems where communication and coordination are necessary. We propose the notion of competent agent and define the basic capabilities of these agents for the extension to be effective. An agent is competent when it is capable of reasoning about its own competence and that of the other agents with which it cooperates in a given domain. In our framework, an agent has competence models of itself and of its acquaintances from which it can decide, for a specific problem to be solved, the type of cooperative activity it can request and from which agent. In this paper we focus on societies of peer agents, i.e. agents that are able to solve the same type of task but that may have different degrees of competence for specific problem ranges.

Multi-agent systems are used mainly in IT solutions and control groups of robots. From the point of view of classical control architectures, they are a kind of distributed systems in which nodes perform advanced algorithms, usually associated with the technology of artificial intelligence, and they can be considered as agents. The article describes the multi-agents control system of objects of uniaxial movements. An example of such a system to control a repository with movable racks with electric motors is presented. Each rack acts as an agent through the implemented control of the resources of embedded microcontrollers. Such a system provides high quality control, guaranteeing long-lasting, trouble-free operation while maintaining the safety of both service and stored items.

In this paper, the formation problem for multi-agent systems with region constraint is studied while few researchers consider this problem. The goal is to control all multi-agents to enter the constraint area while reaching formation. Each agent is constrained by a common convex set. A formation control law is presented based on local information of the neighborhood. It is proved that the positions of all the agents would converge to the set constraint while reaching formation. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the validity of the theoretical results.

Organization concepts and models are increasingly being adopted for the design and specification of multi-agent systems. Agent organizations can be seen as mechanisms of social order, created to achieve common goals for more or less autonomous agents. In order to develop a theory on the relationship between organizational structures, organizational actions, and actions of agents performing roles in the organization, we need a theoretical framework to describe and reason about organizations. The formal model presented in this chapter is sufficiently generic to enable the comparison of different existing organizational approaches to Multi-Agent Systems (MAS), while having enough descriptive power to describe realistic organizations.

This paper presents a concurrent object-oriented language, called CUBL, that seems be suitable for the development and maintenance of multi-agent systems. This language is based on objects, called c_units, that act in parallel and communicate with each other through synchronous and asynchronous message passing, and allows the distribution of a program, that is, of its objects on a network of UNIX workstations. This language has been enriched with an agent architecture that offers some of more important features for agent-oriented programming and some advantages as regards the other implemented agent architectures. In particular this architecture allows the development of systems where agents communicate with each other through a high level agent communication language and can change their behavior during their life.
