A group G is said to have finite section p-rankrp(G) = r (here p is a prime) if every elementary abelian p-section U/V of G is finite of order at most pr and there is an elementary abelian p-section A/B of G such that |A/B| = pr. If ℙ is the set of all primes and λ : ℙ → ℕ ∪ {0} is a function, we say that a group G has λ-bounded section rank if rp(G) ≤ λ(p) for each p ∈ ℙ. In this paper we show that if G is a locally generalized radical group in which the normal closures of the cyclic subgroups of G have finite λ-bounded section rank, then [G,G] has [Formula: see text]-bounded section rank for some function [Formula: see text]. This is a wide generalization of some results by Neumann, Smith and many others. Moreover we are able to give explicit formulas for the involved bounds.

We established several new criteria for existence of complements and supplements to some normal abelian subgroups in groups. In passing, as one of the many useful applications and corollaries of these results, we obtained a description of some finitely generated soluble groups of finite Hirsch–Zaitsev rank. As another application of our results, we obtained a D.J.S. Robinson's theorem on structure of finitely generated soluble groups of finite section rank. The original proof of this theorem was homological, but all proofs in this paper, including this one, are purely group-theoretical.

In this paper we give a new family of numbers, called ??-Whitney numbers, which gives generalization of many types of Whitney numbers and Stirling numbers. Some basic properties of these numbers such as recurrence relations, explicit formulas and generating functions are given. Finally many interesting special cases are derived.

Abstract We investigate the abelian sandpile group on modified wheels {\hat{W}}_{n} by using a variant of the dollar game as described in [N. L. Biggs, Chip-Firing and the critical group of a graph, J. Algebr. Comb. 9 (1999), 25–45]. The complete structure of the sandpile group on a class of graphs is given in this paper. In particular, it is shown that the sandpile group on {\hat{W}}_{n} is a direct product of two cyclic subgroups generated by some special configurations. More precisely, the sandpile group on {\hat{W}}_{n} is the direct product of two cyclic subgroups of order {a}_{n} and 3{a}_{n} for n even and of order {a}_{n} and 2{a}_{n} for n odd, respectively.

AbstractWe give a new method of proof for a result of D. Pierre-Loti-Viaud and P. Boulongne which can be seen as a generalization of a characterization of Poisson law due to Rényi and Srivastava. We also provide explicit formulas, in terms of Bell polynomials, for the moments of the compound distributions occurring in the extended collective model in non-life insurance.

The exact theory of linearly elastic beams developed by Ladeve`ze and Ladeve`ze and Simmonds is illustrated using the equations of plane stress for a fully anisotropic elastic body of rectangular shape. Explicit formulas are given for the cross-sectional material operators that appear in the special Saint-Venant solutions of Ladeve`ze and Simmonds and in the overall beamlike stress-strain relations between forces and a moment (the generalized stress) and derivatives of certain one-dimensional displacements and a rotation (the generalized displacement). A new definition is proposed for built-in boundary conditions in which the generalized displacement vanishes rather than pointwise displacements or geometric averages.

AbstractIn the paper, employing methods and techniques in analysis and linear algebra, the authors find a simple formula for computing an interesting Hessenberg determinant whose elements are products of binomial coefficients and falling factorials, derive explicit formulas for computing some special Hessenberg and tridiagonal determinants, and alternatively and simply recover some known results.
