ZnO/Ag NANOPARTICLE-DECORATED SINGLE-WALLED CARBON NANOTUBES (SWCNTs) AND THEIR PROPERTIES

Raw single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were oxidized by using sulfuric acid and nitric acid at 3:1 ratio to produce oxygen functional groups attached to SWCNTs surfaces. Then, the oxidized SWCNTs are coated with zinc oxide and silver nanoparticles by chemical precipitation route to synthesize ZnO/Ag-SWCNTs nanocomposite material. The nanocomposite sample was analyzed via zeta potential analyzer, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy to investigate colloidal stability, optical, morphological, and structural properties. The SWCNT properties were found to be changed after the addition of ZnO/Ag nanoparticles. Hence, the new ZnO/Ag-SWCNTs nanocomposite is a good candidate for photocatalyst applications and biological applications.

In the present work we have studied the dispersion of single-walled carbon nanotubes in liquid crystalline asymmetrically substituted phthalocyanines (MPc, where M [Formula: see text] Cu, Co, and 2H) bearing one pyrene and six polyoxy groups as side chains. The influence of single-walled carbon nanotubes on the phase behavior of MPcs was investigated using X-ray diffraction, polarized optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. It was demonstrated that the incorporation of small amounts of single-walled carbon nanotubes ([Formula: see text]1 wt.%) does not alter the MPc mesophases. The structural features and the sensor response of composite thin films of MPc with single-walled carbon nanotubes to ammonia vapor (10–50 ppm) was studied and compared with those of the films of pure MPc derivatives.

This study is considered as a method for producing multifunctional metal composite materials by using Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWNTs). In this research, various metals (Ni, Cu, Ag ) were successfully deposited onto the surface of SWNTs. It has been found that homogenous dispersion and dense nucleation sites are the necessary conditions to form uniform coating on SWNTs. Functionalization has been applied to achieve considerable improvement in the dispersion of purified single-walled carbon nanotubes. A three-step electroless plating approach was used and the coating mechanism is described in the paper. The samples were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The application of coated SWNTs in Titanium will be discussed in this paper.
