The access to public open spaces (POSs) has been catching the attention of urban planners and architects alike to inject dynamism into their design so as to bring life back into the static structures they have or about to create. POSs are not just green spaces existing between buildings, but spaces to host events, grounds for physical exercise, as well as rehabilitation workout places for patients discharged from the hospitals. In China, 44.6% of the country, mostly located in high latitude and altitude areas, accessibility to POSs is often hampered by bad weather. In this paper, we reported on an ethnography process from the point of view of pedestrians walking in the cold to experience the accessibility to POSs using Global Position System (GPS) mobile phones carried in their pockets, as a biosensor, to study the behaviors of pedestrians on the move, so as to identify the access points for possible urban redevelopment, where weatherproof linkways could be put in place to facilitate and encourage people to venture out into the open during winter months. In the course of our research, we undertook a case study in the central districts of Harbin that includes Nangang, Daoli, Daowai and Xiangfang districts, during the winter months (from December 2015 to June 2016), enduring an average monthly temperature of [Formula: see text]C, to ethnography, the pattern of pedestrians walking in the cold. The results confirm our hypothesis that harsh cold environment and the extreme climate conditions have discouraged the access to POSs. At the same time, the data collected have also helped us to pinpoint access points where weatherproof link way could be provided to facilitate and encourage people to travel by foot during winter months.

Conviviality is a popular concept in urban design while referring to the good qualities of public spaces. This concept is the need for current times when social life in physical public spaces is declining away largely to forces like social media and the virtual world. The human tendency to feel satisfied and happy exists in existence with others. The social media has taken away the role that established Greek agora as the first centre of public interaction which initiated the concepts of modern democracy. Where popular public spaces have big roles to perform, the small public spaces in the neighbourhood and markets perform an important role to stage the everyday local nuisance in people's life. Even If public space is satisfactory enough to take away the loneliness and boredom of everyday course of modern living a lot can be achieved. Conviviality is one such factor which helps to elevate the satisfaction of spending time with others. This paper is an attempt to understand conviviality and relate it to public open spaces from the physical planning point of view.

Abstract: Public open spaces are spaces that can be accessed for free and can accommodate a variety of peoples and activities. Therefore, both if in each residential area or at a certain radius there is at least one public open space, no exception in urban villages with a characteristic population density that has become the root of settlement culture in Indonesia. This research then took a case study in one of the villages in the city of Yogyakarta, namely Kampung Gampingan, which despite entering into a slum arrangement according to Mayor Decree Number 216 Year 2016, but still has one existing public open space that still exists utilized by residents around every day, both by children until adults. Related to these findings, this study was conducted as a basic study whose results can be used as a foundation for the arrangement of slums in the future. In its design, public open space must also pay attention to the times and various aspects and needs for the convenience of its users. Although comfort is very difficult to define, at least comfort can be assessed through people's preferences through the responsiveness of each individual. For this reason, through a qualitative-exploratory method using a questionnaire filled out by users of public open spaces in Kampung Gampingan, this study aims to find citizens' preferences for aspects of the comfort of public open spaces based on comfort theory; what matters that must be prioritized or must be avoided in the design for the creation of the convenience of citizens. From this study it was found that in order to achieve the comfort of a public open space, aspects of governance needed include cleanliness, safety, circulation, shape / dimension, noise, lighting, smell, natural/ climate power, and supporting facilities such as the free internet access, parks, CCTV, drink water, trash cans, streetlights, children's games, and furniture.

This research focuses on the treatment of public open spaces (POS) in multifamily housing areas in post-socialist Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. The aim is to evaluate their quality and sustainability and to identify all important impact factors influencing their properties. A case study was conducted on a representative sample of four multi-family housing sites in Nis, Serbia. Determining the interconnection between urban planning parameters and the realized quality of POS is one of the primary objectives that could lead to forming recommendations for future multi-family housing development, including more usable and sustainable POS in the current social and economic context. The models for improvement of POS quality and sustainability are defined as a research result.

The lack of public open space due to the land competition in urban area generates less activity to gather in community, because of this changing of the life style, people who used to gather in public open spaces now moving to gather in modern shopping centers. This led to the development of shopping center design that integrated with public open space as a forum for the community to gather. This research takes a case study in Paris Van Java Mall Bandung (West Java), Mall Kelapa Gading (DKI Jakarta), and Lippo Mall kemang (DKI Jakarta). These three shopping centers is integrated with public open space. The purpose of this research is to find a form of integration of public open spaces to the shopping centers, especially in the aspect of circulation, zoning activities, and visual space. The method use in this research is descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Methods of data collection are using place-centered mapping and person-centered mapping. The results of this research indicate that circulation aspects use camouflaging approach by the linear arranged retails, that visitors can pass through the space between retails whose circulation form with semi open space. The aspect of zoning activity will form zoning receiver, zoning connections, zoning support (retail, sitting area, garden), and multiuse zoning. The aspect of visual space will be dominated by the space and the principle of rhythm, so that the visual of the space would provide unity between public open space and shopping center.

Abstract - Visual impairment is a term given to someone who does not have healthy vision. To fulfill their daily life needs, people with visual impairment tend to depend on the facilities in public open spaces. Accessibility that should support people with visual impairment in using public transportation facilities is often poorly maintained. This kind of condition could lead to fatal consequences to the safety of persons with disabilities. Options linked  to accessing public open spaces for people with visual impairment become limited due to the lack of facilities. The refurbishment has been done at Tanah Abang Station by providing a transit plaza for users that is connected to various public transportation facilities, which enables easy and comfortable navigation. This has become an opportunity, to build better public facilities that are accessible to all users, including for people with visual impairment. Through this effort, the transit plaza should be able to serve as a public space that is beneficial for people with visual impairment, so there are more possibilities to ensure their quality of life. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which the transit plaza can provide accessibility for people with visual impairment. The method used is qualitative and data collection was carried out through literature studies, field surveys as well as interviews and simulations with people with visual impairment. The results conclude that the accessibility value referring to technical requirements indicates that the transit plaza sufficiently complies with accessibility standards regarding public open spaces. This value is compared to the experience of people with visual impairment . This study  found that there are some differences from the aspect of convenience according to the people with visual impairment's point of view. The mobility in the transit plaza is considered easy and safe by people with visual impairment. When they had to determine  direction or orientation, people with visual impairment who were not familiar with transit plaza still had  difficulties to navigate independently. When facing these situations, blind people adapted by relying on abilities other than their sight as an alternative. Transit plaza could provide universal convenience for users by accommodate accessibility that can not only encourage the independence of the people with visual impairment, but also support comfort and safety of  individuals without visual impairment.   Keywords: Visual impairment, accessibility, transit plaza
