The physical structure of Podgorica was predominantly developed with a traditional planning concept, whereby public open spaces of the city are as important as the city’s architectural objects. The focus of this paper is the perception of a traditional street in the context of sustainable urban regeneration. The aim of this study is to submit a proposal, through the Urban Design course at the Faculty of Architecture in Podgorica, for the physical regeneration of twelve traditional streets (eight street directions) that define the central core of Podgorica, known as Mirkova Varoš. These streets are the sites of social processes, interpreters of cultural and identity values of the society, and primary keepers of collective memory. It was detected that the attractiveness of the case study streets is weakening due to inadequate social and professional engagement in the processes of preservation and regeneration over time and also due to new users’ needs. Global requirements reflect the weakened role of public open spaces as places of social interaction, in favour of primarily closed shopping centres that are the new urban artefacts of the 21st century city. The first phase of this study is related to the theoretical interpretation of regeneration and the role of public space in the context of socio-spatial sustainability. The second phase of the study is directed toward estimating the perception of the current state of the street area in Mirova Varoš, as seen by the case study area users and architecture students, using (1) visual, (2) tactile, and (3) auditory criteria. The obtained results serve as a platform for concrete urban design proposals for sustainable street regeneration that will reflect a stronger socio-spatial interaction between (1) user–place, (2) the place–city system, and (3) local processes–global flows.

This paper focuses on urban planning strategies to adapt cities to the increasing rising of temperatures during summer heat waves. The main target is to investigate which configuration and distribution pattern of green spaces could effectively improve natural cooling of urban environments. Although the benefit that green areas give to natural cooling is well known, this kind of studies has hardly been carried out, especially at an urban scale where it is crucial to define quantities and density of green areas to address open spaces design. To reach this goal, a methodology based on the interpretation of the statistical correlation among temperature, urban parameters and green areas configurational indicators was implemented and applied to the case study of the Municipality of Naples, performing all the analysis in a GIS. Results provide guidelines to improve natural cooling in urban areas adopting the most effective configuration and distribution of green areas within a densely-built context.

Abstract: Public open spaces are spaces that can be accessed for free and can accommodate a variety of peoples and activities. Therefore, both if in each residential area or at a certain radius there is at least one public open space, no exception in urban villages with a characteristic population density that has become the root of settlement culture in Indonesia. This research then took a case study in one of the villages in the city of Yogyakarta, namely Kampung Gampingan, which despite entering into a slum arrangement according to Mayor Decree Number 216 Year 2016, but still has one existing public open space that still exists utilized by residents around every day, both by children until adults. Related to these findings, this study was conducted as a basic study whose results can be used as a foundation for the arrangement of slums in the future. In its design, public open space must also pay attention to the times and various aspects and needs for the convenience of its users. Although comfort is very difficult to define, at least comfort can be assessed through people's preferences through the responsiveness of each individual. For this reason, through a qualitative-exploratory method using a questionnaire filled out by users of public open spaces in Kampung Gampingan, this study aims to find citizens' preferences for aspects of the comfort of public open spaces based on comfort theory; what matters that must be prioritized or must be avoided in the design for the creation of the convenience of citizens. From this study it was found that in order to achieve the comfort of a public open space, aspects of governance needed include cleanliness, safety, circulation, shape / dimension, noise, lighting, smell, natural/ climate power, and supporting facilities such as the free internet access, parks, CCTV, drink water, trash cans, streetlights, children's games, and furniture.

This research focuses on the treatment of public open spaces (POS) in multifamily housing areas in post-socialist Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. The aim is to evaluate their quality and sustainability and to identify all important impact factors influencing their properties. A case study was conducted on a representative sample of four multi-family housing sites in Nis, Serbia. Determining the interconnection between urban planning parameters and the realized quality of POS is one of the primary objectives that could lead to forming recommendations for future multi-family housing development, including more usable and sustainable POS in the current social and economic context. The models for improvement of POS quality and sustainability are defined as a research result.

The lack of public open space due to the land competition in urban area generates less activity to gather in community, because of this changing of the life style, people who used to gather in public open spaces now moving to gather in modern shopping centers. This led to the development of shopping center design that integrated with public open space as a forum for the community to gather. This research takes a case study in Paris Van Java Mall Bandung (West Java), Mall Kelapa Gading (DKI Jakarta), and Lippo Mall kemang (DKI Jakarta). These three shopping centers is integrated with public open space. The purpose of this research is to find a form of integration of public open spaces to the shopping centers, especially in the aspect of circulation, zoning activities, and visual space. The method use in this research is descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Methods of data collection are using place-centered mapping and person-centered mapping. The results of this research indicate that circulation aspects use camouflaging approach by the linear arranged retails, that visitors can pass through the space between retails whose circulation form with semi open space. The aspect of zoning activity will form zoning receiver, zoning connections, zoning support (retail, sitting area, garden), and multiuse zoning. The aspect of visual space will be dominated by the space and the principle of rhythm, so that the visual of the space would provide unity between public open space and shopping center.

Abstract The Brazilian Amazon has provoked preservationist discussions for decades, and although there has been a breakthrough in the recognition of the role of traditional populations for the biome maintenance, most strategies adopted in the country privileged the region’s scale, without concern about local scale, particularly features of cities and of their inhabitants. The hypothesis that is pursued in this article is that the space of Western Amazonian frontier should offer innovative potential for urbanization solutions, especially in the treatment of open spaces. It also goes to prove that by not fully having structured its territory it could learn from human history, science framework, and from traditional knowledge. Assuming that urbanization process across this region takes place in a single space-time, this paper first approaches the dichotomy between city and nature built over time to deconstruct it, considering contemporary city’s emerging spatiality and possible evolution scenarios. Marabá was adopted as case study, a city located between states and biomes, in the economic frontier circumstances of Western Amazonian. The research shows that from the existing open spaces raise an encouragement to reconcile urbanism and ecology.

Over the past few decades, the importance of public open spaces has been substantially increased due to rapid urbanization and developments. Likewise, cities and communities in the Arab world are also going through urban transformation; driven by the global context in which cities are being reshaped along with the modernization of urban planning themes. Over the last 15 years, Dubai has emerged as one of the world’s fastest growing cities. It has been associated with the desire to build tall buildings as a statement of modernity, globalization, and economic prosperity, which lead to a rapid growth in population. This expansion has caused many environmental and urban planning challenges. Hasty urbanization, demographic, and economic growth alongside land privatization process has progressively changed the nature and theme of public open spaces within the UAE which in turn creates a gap between social life and community urban planning. The regeneration of public open spaces in cities of the UAE is a major issue as multiple factors must be taken into consideration during the design stages. This paper aims at understanding the role of physical interface of the public open spaces in context of UAE and its transformation over the years. These spaces act as a catalyst which accelerate this transformation of urban scenario and there by citizens life. Open places play an important role for bringing people closer and act as a socio-cultural entity for the sake of improving social life and interactivity. Social well-being arises from a sense of security, belonging, familiarity, support, cohesion, and integration of social groups, based on respect for different cultures, traditions, and backgrounds. Hence this research analyzes the influence of such tangible and intangible elements in the public open spaces, through which the social interaction happens and offers unprecedented experience to the users, visitors and urban community alike.
