In 2006, during a meeting of a working group of scientists in La Jolla, California at The Neurosciences Institute (NSI), Gerald Edelman described a roadmap towards the creation of a Conscious Artifact. As far as I know, this roadmap was not published. However, it did shape my thinking and that of many others in the years since that meeting. This short paper, which is based on my notes taken during the meeting, describes the key steps in this roadmap. I believe it is as groundbreaking today as it was more than 15 years ago.

Participants at the second National Gathering of the Aboriginal Nutrition Network (ANN) were encouraged to submit their favourite traditional recipes. Approximately 40 were received, and a volunteer working group contacted contributors to assist in the creation of a recipe resource with a selection of 12 recipes that included traditional ingredients to promote Indigenous foodways. All contributors were interviewed to share stories about their recipes. Each recipe was then tested, photographed, and developed into a resource handout that was disseminated to a variety of stakeholders. Afterwards, a brief survey was conducted with ANN recipients of the recipes (n = 23) to evaluate the recipe collection. When asked, “Prior to learning about this resource, was a collection of recipes using traditional foods something that you or the communities you work with were interested in?” all respondents answered yes. Nearly all found the recipes easy to follow (91%), and that they were applicable to the interests or needs of the communities they work with (83%). Preserving recipes and building opportunities for dietitians and other health professionals to contribute to traditional food recipe collections facilitates increased knowledge transfer, enhanced cross-cultural understanding, and is generally a useful tool for those working with Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

In this short paper, we discuss a dialectic methodology surrounding theinterpretation of knowledge transfer, and the conditional elements whichcan be seen to support the concept of a unity of knowledge. We discuss adiffering standpoint to knowledge and knowledge value, based on theknowledge transfer practitioner’s perspective, but still in a business context.We ask why, if knowledge is vital for business success and competitiveadvantage, the transfer of knowledge is rarely a simple unproblematic event.Further, that the creation of knowledge before transfer is recognised as asignificant factor in determining a starting point for analogous scrutiny, andoften under a premise of doxastic attitude. This discussion therefore aims tosynthesise current literature and research into an elemental epistemicprincipal of FIGURATION DYNAMICS, and in doing so, may help focuscongruent knowledge transfer theories.

‘Vanishing Viper 2019’ was organised in the wake of continuing evidence for declines in British populations of the northern viper or adder (Vipera berus). The meeting included British participants as well as those from other European countries, whose insights suggest that the drivers of adder declines in mainland Europe are similar to those in Britain. Consequently, we stand to benefit from their knowledge and experience. It was concluded that if adder declines continue at the present pace then Britain may be left with a few large, flourishing populations, but that many of the smaller populations will be lost as appears to have happened in Belgium, France, Germany and The Netherlands. The meeting considered a range of conservation actions including improvements to habitat management, the creation of adder ‘ARKs’, population restoration by genetic or demographic enhancements, community level promotion and outreach, and opportunities for new policy-driven environmental schemes. It is recommended to create a national Adder Working Group to help crystallise and prioritise the main issues and a larger, more informal Adder Network to link and co-ordinate adder researchers and land managers to ensure a free flow of ideas, information and advice. Our chances of success in these ventures will be all the greater if we continue to share experience with our European neighbours.

After the international legal community widely endorsed the application of international law to cyberspace, many open questions remain on the concrete interpretation of existing rights and obligations to the cyber realm. In pursuit of its mandate to promote human rights and conflict prevention, the OSCE can play a major role to support operationalization of international law and application of existing principles to cyberspace. This paper examines some key steps in the aftermath of the creation of norms of behavior, and transparency and confidence-building measures. After a brief analysis of the normcreation process, this piece identifies several pressing cybersecurity challenges on the international landscape, and offers suggestions for consolidating the voluntary non-binding norms States agreed upon. Using lessons learned from other domains, the analysis will focus on mechanisms of building further stability and transparency in cyberspace, in particular by reference to the due diligence principle and States’ human rights obligations.

Literacy, education, and standardization were key steps forward in consolidating the drum kit’s legitimacy in the 1930s. This chapter examines the biographies of many early drummers and how they learnt to play the drum kit. Arguments over how to play the drum kit were inseparable from the changing form of the drum kit itself, as manufacturers like Ludwig, Slingerland, Leedy, and Gretsch competed to sell standardized, pre-bundled drum kits in their catalogues rather than the hodge-podge, self-assembled drum kits of the past. This chapter discusses the creation of an international market for drum kits through a combination of instrument innovation, education, and old-fashioned hucksterism. Drum manufacturers created their own newsletters as a way of convincing drummers to buy their product. The chapter also examines the career of swing era drummer Gene Krupa, comparing him with African-American drummer Chick Webb, an influential but less well known drumming bandleader.

In recent years, prevalent global societal issues related to fake news, fakery, misinformation, and disinformation were brought to the fore, leading to the construction of descriptive labels such as “post-truth” to refer to the supposedly new emerging era. Thereby, the (mis-)use of technologies such as AI and VR has been argued to potentially fuel this new loss of “ground-truth”, for instance, via the ethically relevant deepfakes phenomena and the creation of realistic fake worlds, presumably undermining experiential veracity. Indeed, unethical and malicious actors could harness tools at the intersection of AI and VR (AIVR) to craft what we call immersive falsehood, fake immersive reality landscapes deliberately constructed for malicious ends. This short paper analyzes the ethically relevant nature of the background against which such malicious designs in AIVR could exacerbate the intentional proliferation of deceptions and falsities. We offer a reappraisal expounding that while immersive falsehood could manipulate and severely jeopardize the inherently affective constructions of social reality and considerably complicate falsification processes, humans may neither inhabit a post-truth nor a post-falsification age. Finally, we provide incentives for future AIVR safety work, ideally contributing to a future era of technology-augmented critical thinking.

Abstract Tethering of the spinal cord has been increasingly recognized as a cause of late deterioration in the child with repaired meningomyelocele. Findings at reoperation include dense arachnoiditis, dermal inclusion cysts, fibrolipoma of the filum terminale, and, on occasion, foreign body granulomas. This article reviews four key steps in meningomyelocele repair and the guidelines for detection of surgically remediable lesions associated with this disorder. In addition, it proposes a modification of the standard dural closure that may reduce the incidence of contributory adhesive arachnoiditis by the creation of a capacious cerebrospinal fluid space about the neural plaque. The article argues that although all scholars within aesthetics basically know and recognize it, there is a tendency in many of its traditions to forget or to underestimate the importance of the aesthetic judgment. With Thierry de Duve’s short paper “Why Kant got it Right” as its point of departure, this importance is discussed. Not only its importance in aesthetic relations and to aesthetics as a discipline, but also in a broader sense, through the contribution to the overall social cohesion of society, offered by aesthetic judgments. All judgments are pronounced as-if a shared scale of aesthetic preferences did exist (which it does not). Judgments are addressed to communities, to the notion of a joint “we”, and thus they do participate in the creation and the maintenance of the social as such. Also professional aesthetic critique, including art critique, should be aware of that, since even historically achieved differentiations and divisions of labour may be lost again if not being developed and kept up to date.

Ring-closing enyne metathesis reaction has emerged as an elegant tool in organic synthesis for the creation of molecular complexity and used to prepare diverse heterocycles. In this mini review, I discuss that various linearly and angularly architecture heterocyclic compounds may be prepared using RCEM as key steps.
