Revised tectonostratigraphy and structural evolution of the Köli Nappe Complex, Central Caledonides in Nordland, Norway

The nappe stack in the Røssvatnet-Hattfjelldal region in the Central Norwegian Caledonides consists of seven nappes formed at the boundary between tectonostratigraphically upper and uppermost Caledonian levels. The rocks of all nappes share a polyphase tectono-metamorphic evolution that is younger than the 491±10 Ma depositional (volcanic) age of parts of the succession. Early deformation stages characterized by centimetre- to kilometre-scale folding and intense shearing accompanied by greenschist- to amphibolite-facies peak metamorphism are correlated with the Early Ordovician Taconian accretionary orogeny along the Laurentian margin. The Taconian structures are cut by the Krutfjellet gabbro and diorite, which yield U-Pb zircon ages of 446±5 and 444±4 Ma, respectively. Large-scale nappe stacking and folding postdating emplacement of the gabbro was related to collision of Laurentia with Baltica (Scandian orogeny) and followed by late-/postorogenic extension. The revised tectonostratigraphy assigns the structurally higher nappes to the Uppermost Allochthon while the lower nappes are correlated with the Middle Köli Nappe Complex (Upper Allochthon). The boundary between them is marked by an imbricate zone. Taconian deformation was probably much more penetrative and widespread than hitherto thought; thus, parts of the nappe stack were likely assembled prior to Scandian collision.Supplementary material:https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.c.5357255

AbstractThe organic-rich upper Lower Jurassic Da'anzhai Member (Ziliujing Formation) of the Sichuan Basin, China is the first stratigraphically well-constrained lacustrine succession associated with the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE; ∼183 Ma). The formation and/or expansion of the Sichuan mega-lake, likely one of the most extensive fresh-water systems to have existed on the planet, is marked by large-scale lacustrine organic productivity and carbon burial during the T-OAE, possibly due to intensified hydrological cycling and nutrient supply. New molecular biomarker and organic petrographical analyses, combined with bulk organic and inorganic geochemical and palynological data, are presented here, providing insight into aquatic productivity, land-plant biodiversity, and terrestrial ecosystem evolution in continental interiors during the T-OAE. We show that lacustrine algal growth during the T-OAE accounted for a significant organic-matter flux to the lakebed in the palaeo-Sichuan mega-lake. Lacustrine water-column stratification during the T-OAE facilitated the formation of dysoxic-anoxic conditions at the lake bottom, favouring organic-matter preservation and carbon sequestration into organic-rich black shales in the Sichuan Basin. We attribute the palaeo-Sichuan mega-lake expansion to enhanced hydrological cycling in a more vigorous monsoonal climate in the hinterland during the T-OAE greenhouse.Supplementary material at https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.c.5433544

AbstractThe Welton oil field has produced nearly 20 MMBO (million barrels of oil) since discovery in 1981. Now in post-plateau decline, there is increasing reliance on a series of secondary reservoirs. Production has been from a suite of stacked reservoirs deposited by large-scale prograding delta-plain systems of early Westphalian age. Whilst the bulk of production has been from the Basal Succession, a considerable upside is considered to exist in the less well-studied Upper Succession that comprises predominantly distributary channel and crevasse splay deposits which have produced in excess of 3 MMBO. These accumulations occur within the Deep Soft Rock, Deep Hard Rock and Tupton reservoirs.This paper focuses on a sedimentological analysis of cored intervals, integrated with petrophysical logs and detailed production data to enable further recommendations to identify areas of undrained pay, along with identifying additional reservoir management activities that could optimize future offtake from the field. These reservoirs consist predominantly of very fine-grained sandstone, with permeability values rarely attaining 100 mD and average porosity values of 10–12%.Recommendations include executing tracer communication tests and building a detailed field model, as well as a pilot water-injection scheme to increase production from some of Welton's secondary reservoirs.Supplementary material: A full set of detailed sedimentological logs for each of the cored wells in this study is available at https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.c.3593984

The high-grade complexes along the northern Moldanubian periphery of the central Bohemian Massif provide an outstanding structural record of all episodes of the Variscan collisional evolution. Kinematics and timing of orogenic processes have been examined by structural and microstructural study of middle and lower crustal rocks combined with xenotime and monazite geochronology. Four distinct tectonic events have been identified in the studied units. A first relict sub-horizontal fabric S1 associated with the HP/HT metamorphism is developed only in the lower crustal rocks and was related to back-arc extension or lower crustal flow in a supra-subduction domain. This fabric was at c. 340 Ma completely reworked to the sub-vertical foliation S2 by the major collisional thickening leading to the lower and middle crust juxtaposition. Thereafter, the extensional collapse of thickened orogenic system caused strong refolding to the HT sub-horizontal fabric at c. 325 Ma. The region was subsequently affected by the NNE–SSW oriented horizontal shortening related to the dextral shearing and clockwise rotation of crustal blocks adjacent to the large scale dextral shear zone, the Elbe Zone. AbstractHuman emissions of greenhouse gases have caused a predictable rise of 1.2°C in global temperatures. Over the last 70 years, the rise has occurred at a geologically unprecedented speed and scale. To avoid a worsening situation, most developed nations are turning to renewable sources of power to meet their climate commitments, including UK, Norway, Denmark and The Netherlands. The North Sea basin offers many advantages in the transition from fossil fuels by virtue of its natural resources, physical setting, offshore infrastructure and skilled workforce. Nonetheless, the magnitude of the up-front costs and the areas required to achieve net zero emissions are rarely acknowledged. In addition, some of the technologies being planned are commercially immature. In particular, the current cost of capture, transport and disposal of carbon dioxide is problematic, if it is to be applied as a large-scale solution to industrial emissions. To repurpose the North Sea to meet a low-carbon future will require substantial collaboration between governments and industrial sectors. The tectonic significance of the Muness Phyllite, which overlies the Unst–Fetlar ophiolite in Shetland, Scottish Caledonides, is poorly understood. U–Pb analyses of detrital zircons show that it was deposited after c. 469 Ma. Early Paleozoic grains have εHf values of −0.3 to +12.3 and were probably derived from the extension of the Midland Valley arc. Psammite clasts and the matrix of the Muness Phyllite contain Proterozoic and Archean detrital zircons with age peaks of c. 1, 1.4–1.5, 1.6–1.7, 1.8–1.9 and 2.7 Ga. These are consistent with ultimate derivation from NE Laurentia sources and were probably recycled from the Neoproterozoic East Mainland Succession that underlies the Mesozoic East Shetland Basin. The Muness Phyllite is interpreted to have been deposited soon after the Grampian I orogeny in a successor basin that overstepped and received detritus from the Midland Valley arc, the East Mainland Succession and the Unst–Fetlar ophiolite. It was then deformed and metamorphosed, probably at c. 450 Ma during the Grampian II orogenic event. The Caledonian Orogen preserves the record of a complete Wilson cycle from rifting to continent-continent collision and orogenic collapse. The Revsegg Allochthon, the uppermost tectonostratigraphic unit of the Hardangervidda-Ryfylke Nappe Complex of the southern Scandinavian Caledonides, is an understudied example illustrating key temporal and tectonic stages in a Wilson cycle. It overlies 1600-1500 Ma gneisses of the Kvitenut Allochthon that were deformed, metamorphosed and juxtaposed onto the Dyrskard Allochthon at 1000 Ma. The Revsegg Allochthon consists of leucosome-bearing mica-schists with meta-sandstone, and amphibolite and granitoids lenses. The timing of sedimentation of metasedimentary rocks is constrained to the period 780 - 495 Ma, but its association with a 495 Ma bimodal mafic and felsic intrusive suite suggests concurrent sedimentation in a Cambrian extensional setting. The Revsegg Allochthon underwent peak metamorphism at 480-470 Ma, followed by several metamorphic stages from 460 to 440 Ma, probably at an active margin outboard of Baltica, as postulated for the eclogite-bearing Jæren Nappe to the southeast. The Revsegg Allochthon was thrust onto the Kvitenut-Dyrskard duplex from 437 Ma to 434 Ma during an early Scandian phase also recognized in the Seve Nappe. Segmentation of the Guyanas continental margin of South America is inherited from the dual-phase Mesozoic rifting history controlling the first-order post-rift sedimentary architecture. The margin is divided into two segments by a transform marginal plateau (TMP), the Demerara Rise, into the Central and Equatorial Atlantic domains. This paper investigates the heterogeneities in the post-rift sedimentary systems at a mega-regional scale (>1000 km). Re-sampling seven key exploration wells and scientific boreholes provides new data (189 analysed samples) that have been used to build a high-resolution stratigraphic framework using multiple biostratigraphic techniques integrated with organic geochemistry to refine the timing of 10 key stratigraphic surfaces and three megasequences. The results have been used to calibrate the interpretation of a margin-scale two-dimensional seismic reflection dataset and build megasequence isochore maps, structural restorations and gross depositional environment maps at key time intervals of the margin evolution.Our findings revise the dating of the basal succession drilled by the A2-1 well, indicating that the oldest post-rift sequence penetrated along the margin is late Tithonian age (previously Callovian). Early Central Atlantic carbonate platform sediments passively infilled subcircular-shaped basement topography controlled by underlying basement structure of thinned continental crust. Barremian-Aptian rifting in the Equatorial Atlantic folding and thrusting the Demerara Rise resulting in major uplift, gravitational margin collapse, transpressional structures, and peneplanation of up to 1 km of sediment capped by the regional angular base Albian unconformity. Equatorial Atlantic rifting led to margin segmentation and the formation of the TMP, where two major unconformities developed during the intra Late Albian and base Cenomanian. These two unconformities are time synchronous with oceanic crust accretion offshore French Guiana and in the Demerara-Guinea transform, respectively. A marine connection between the Central and Equatorial Atlantic is demonstrated by middle Late Albian times, coinciding with deposition of the organic-rich source rock of the Canje Formation) (average TOC 4.21 %). The succession is variably truncated by the middle Campanian unconformity. PurposeThe purpose of this study is to empirically investigate determinants of financial distress among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) during the global financial crisis and post-crisis periods.Design/methodology/approachSeveral statistical methods, including multiple binary logistic regression, were used to analyse a longitudinal cross-sectional panel data set of 3,865 Swedish SMEs operating in five industries over the 2008–2015 period.FindingsThe results suggest that financial distress is influenced by macroeconomic conditions (i.e. the global financial crisis) and, in particular, by various firm-specific characteristics (i.e. performance, financial leverage and financial distress in previous year). However, firm size and industry affiliation have no significant relationship with financial distress.Research limitationsDue to data availability, this study is limited to a sample of Swedish SMEs in five industries covering eight years. Further research could examine the generalizability of these findings by investigating other firms operating in other industries and other countries.Originality/valueThis study is the first to examine determinants of financial distress among SMEs operating in Sweden using data from a large-scale longitudinal cross-sectional database.

Purpose The paper aims to examine organizational authoring understood as a longitudinal, material and dialectical process of transformation efforts. The following questions are asked: To which extent can a Change Laboratory intervention help practitioners author their own learning? Are the authored outcomes of a Change Laboratory intervention futile if a workplace subsequently undergoes large-scale organizational transformations? Does the expansive learning authored in a Change Laboratory intervention survive large-scale organizational transformations, and if so, why does it survive and how? Design/methodology/approach The paper develops a conceptual argument based on cultural–historical activity theory. The conceptual argument is grounded in the examination of a case of eight years of change efforts in a university library, including a Change Laboratory (CL) intervention. Follow-up interview data are used to discuss and illuminate our argument in relation to the three research questions. Findings The idea of knotworking constructed in the CL process became a “germ cell” that generates novel solutions in the library activity. A large-scale transformation from the local organization model developed in the CL process to the organization model of the entire university library was not experienced as a loss. The dialectical tension between the local and global models became a source of movement driven by the emerging expansive object. Practitioners are modeling their own collective future competences, expanding them both in socio-spatial scope and interactive depth. Originality/value The article offers an expanded view of authorship, calling attention to material changes and practical change actions. The dialectical tensions identified serve as heuristic guidelines for future studies and interventions.

Purpose This paper aims to focus on the design of a decentralized observation and control method for a class of large-scale systems characterized by nonlinear interconnected functions that are assumed to be uncertain but quadratically bounded. Design/methodology/approach Sufficient conditions, under which the designed control scheme can achieve the asymptotic stabilization of the augmented system, are developed within the Lyapunov theory in the framework of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Findings The derived LMIs are formulated under the form of an optimization problem whose resolution allows the concurrent computation of the decentralized control and observation gains and the maximization of the nonlinearity coverage tolerated by the system without becoming unstable. The reliable performances of the designed control scheme, compared to a distinguished decentralized guaranteed cost control strategy issued from the literature, are demonstrated by numerical simulations on an extensive application of a three-generator infinite bus power system. Originality/value The developed optimization problem subject to LMI constraints is efficiently solved by a one-step procedure to analyze the asymptotic stability and to synthesize all the control and observation parameters. Therefore, such a procedure enables to cope with the conservatism and suboptimal solutions procreated by optimization problems based on iterative algorithms with multi-step procedures usually used in the problem of dynamic output feedback decentralized control of nonlinear interconnected systems.
