AbstractThe Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE) 1b is well documented in western Tethys, however, records in Eurasia are still lacking. Here, we carried out high-resolution organic carbon isotope (δ13Corg), total organic carbon (TOC) contents and mercury (Hg) concentrations analysis of the lacustrine sediments from the Xiagou and Zhonggou formations in the Hanxiagou section, Jiuquan Basin, northwestern China. The lacustrine δ13Corg curve presents three stages of negative excursions above the basalt layer dated at 112.4 ± 0.3 Ma in the lowermost Zhonggou Formation. The three negative δ13Corg excursions, well corresponded with the three subevents (Kilian, Paquier, and Leenhardt) of the OAE1b in Poggio le Guaine (central Italy), Vocontian Basin (SE France) and St Rosa Canyon (NE Mexico) sections, supporting the record of the terrestrial OAE 1b in the Jiuquan Basin. Five mercury enrichment (ME) intervals in Hg/TOC ratios were recognized, indicating that the pulsed volcanism from the southern Kerguelen Plateau likely triggered the OAE 1b. However, the decoupling between NIE shifts and mercury enrichments signifying other carbon reservoir (with no link to mercury) probably contributed to the global carbon cycle perturbation during the OAE 1b period. Our results provide direct evidence to link the OAE 1b and terrestrial ecosystem in the Eurasia.

AbstractThe second-order Pliensbachian–Toarcian crisis affected major groups of marine organisms. While its impact has been intensively studied for ammonites, the response of belemnites is only currently emerging through quantitative studies. Novel overall and regional diversity analyses suggest that belemnite richness in the NW-Tethys drops at the Pliensbachian–Toarcian boundary, while overall diversity slightly increases in NW-Tethys assemblages during the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic event (T-OAE), mostly driven by NW European assemblages (e.g., Yorkshire). The T-OAE coincides with marked taxonomic turnover within individual basins, which is associated with an increase in median rostrum size of specimens in taxa at most localities. The changes in median body size across the Pliensbachian–Toarcian boundary are less consistent and driven by changes in body size within individual lineages crossing the boundary. However, our analyses also illustrate differences in sampling across the Pliensbachian–Toarcian crisis, which needs to be considered in further studies.

Abstract The Tarfaya-Laayoune coastal basin developed in a stable passive margin, where sedimentation occurred in shallow bays. During the Late Cretaceous, bituminous and phosphatic series were deposited in the shallow depression such as Sebkha Oum Debaa. In this work, the age of these Cretaceous layers are refined using a palynological approach and their paleoenvironments are described using organic geochemistry. Based on quantitative and qualitative palynological analyses, the sediments revealed a rich and diverse dinoflagellate cyst assemblage (65 taxa); among them 9 important biostratigraphic markers: Andalusiella inflata, Andalusiella ivoirensis, Andalusiella mauthei, Cerodinium diebelii, Cerodinium speciosum, Dinogymnium acuminatum, Odontochitina porifera, Trichodinium castanea, and Trithyrodinium evittii. According to the reported stratigraphic dinoflagellate taxa distribution, an age range of late Campanian to early Maastrichtian is herein proposed for the Oum Debaa Formation. This biostratigraphy update has been correlated to the Tethyan and Sub-Boreal domains. On the paleoenvironmental level, geochemical proxies have displayed an anoxic lagoon depositional which is dominated by an intermediate climate between hot / humid and arid with an often low paleoproductivity regime which induces redox conditions.
