The paper describes the use of computer assistance in teaching communications engineering. Today, the fast evolution of network communications makes teaching and learning a huge task. Commercial packages such as COMNET III greatly ease this aspect of learning and allow the student to experiment with ‘change and play’ scenarios.

Medical applications are increasingly using computing resources such as IoT sensors and network communications paradigms. An e-Health application requires a basic set of elements such as sensors, a communication framework, and a network structure adapted to the application's specific requirements. This work expands and develops a framework based on the Publish / Subscribe paradigm to develop PSIoT-Health. The PSIoT-Health framework focuses on medical applications that collect data produced in a distributed manner. The PSIoT-Health adapts the Pub/Sub model to the requirements of medical applications and proposes a solution for the production and consumption of data between producers and consumers of medical data in a distributed environment such as the one existing in a smart city.


The concept of smart grid to transform the old power grid into a smart and intelligent electric power distribution system is, currently, a hot research topic. Smart grid offers the merging of electrical power engineering technologies with network communications. Game theory has featured as an interesting technique, adopted by many researchers, to establish effective smart grid communications. The use of game theory has offered solutions to various decision-making problems, ranging from distributed load management to micro storage management in smart grid. Interestingly, different researchers have different objectives or problem scopes for adopting game theory in smart grid. This chapter explores the game-based approach.
