Photophobia (fear of light) occurs in a wide range of ophthalmic, neurological and behavioural conditions, the most common of which is migraine. The visual discomfort associated with migraine can occur not only in response to bright light but also flicker, spatial pattern and colour. The principles that underlie the discomfort are explored and methods to reduce it are proposed.

3D mesh denoising plays an important role in 3D model pre-processing and repair. A fundamental challenge in the mesh denoising process is to accurately extract features from the noise and to preserve and restore the scene structure features of the model. In this paper, we propose a novel feature-preserving mesh denoising method, which was based on robust guidance normal estimation, accurate feature point extraction and an anisotropic vertex denoising strategy. The methodology of the proposed approach is as follows: (1) The dual weight function that takes into account the angle characteristics is used to estimate the guidance normals of the surface, which improved the reliability of the joint bilateral filtering algorithm and avoids losing the corner structures; (2) The filtered facet normal is used to classify the feature points based on the normal voting tensor (NVT) method, which raised the accuracy and integrity of feature classification for the noisy model; (3) The anisotropic vertex update strategy is used in triangular mesh denoising: updating the non-feature points with isotropic neighborhood normals, which effectively suppressed the sharp edges from being smoothed; updating the feature points based on local geometric constraints, which preserved and restored the features while avoided sharp pseudo features. The detailed quantitative and qualitative analyses conducted on synthetic and real data show that our method can remove the noise of various mesh models and retain or restore the edge and corner features of the model without generating pseudo features.

Abstract Background To date there have been few systematic attempts to establish the general prevalence of asthenopia in unselected populations of school-aged children. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine whether the incorporation of Borsting et al’s 2003 Revised Convergence-Insufficiency Symptom Survey (CISS) into a general school vision screening could aid in the identification of children with visual discomfort and indicate the need for further investigation. Methods Vision screening of an unselected middle school population investigated and analysed the incidence of self-reported nearwork-related visual discomfort via the CISS along with distance and near visual acuities plus non-cycloplegic autorefraction using a Shin-Nippon NVision-K 5001. Results Of the 384 unselected students approached in Grades 6–9, 353 participated (92.2%, mean 13.2 ± 1.4 years). The mean CISS score for the population without amblyopia and/or strabismus (96.0% of all students) was 16.8 ± 0.6, i.e., 45% of students in this cohort had CISS scores greater than one standard deviation above the mean found by Borsting et al. in 2003 during their validation study of the CISS on 9 to 18 year old children without binocular anomalies. Regression analyses indicated significantly higher (p < 0.001) mean CISS scores for the 3.2% who were hyperopes ≥ + 2.00D by non-cycloplegic autorefraction (27.7 ± 14.7) and for those who were amblyopic (24.3 ± 6.6) or strabismic (34.0 ± 9.8). The mean CISS score of 31.6 ± 9.0 for non-amblyopic/strabismic students having near vision poorer than 0.1 LogMAR was significantly higher (p < 0.001) than for those with good acuity. Conclusion The most important finding of this study was the high incidence of asthenopia in an unselected population and that refractive status per se was not a major contributor to CISS scores. The results highlight the usefulness of the CISS questionnaire for assessment of visual discomfort in school vision screenings and the need for future exploration of near binocular vision status as a potential driver of asthenopia in school students, especially given current trends for frequent daily use of computers and handheld devices and necessarily prolonged accommodative-convergence effort at near, both at school and at home.

Exposure to daylight has much to offer and should be optimised to maximise its potential. In order to harvest its benefits, any visual discomfort from daylight should be anticipated and minimised. Hence, there is the need to predict discomfort from daylight glare. While more than 20 models for predicting discomfort from daylight glare have been developed, none accurately predict it. The inclusion of additional factors in the models may improve the predictions. One such factor is the socio-environmental context of the observer. This study compares the evaluations of discomfort glare from daylight for office buildings in four socio-environmental contexts: Chile, Belgium, Japan and Switzerland. The evaluations of discomfort glare, each consisting of subjective assessments and physical measurements of a view condition, were collected at the office desks of 401 participants, although only 211 responses were used in the analyses due to exclusion rules. The results do not suggest evidence of an influence of socio-environmental context on discomfort from daylight glare. In other words, the participants in this study perceived discomfort glare similarly, regardless of their socio-environmental context.
