Abstract Background Bariatric surgery is an effective weight loss method for patients with obesity. One side effect of bariatric surgery is uncomfortable excess skin. Much remains to be learned about physical measurements and patients’ subjective perceptions of it. Here, we investigated the pre- to post-bariatric changes in patients’ perception and physical measurements of the skin on the arms and thighs, in order to find possible subgroups especially affected by post-operative excess skin and to identify predicting factors. Methods One hundred forty-seven patients eligible for bariatric surgery completed the Sahlgrenska Excess Skin Questionnaire (SESQ) and underwent measurements of their skin before and 18 months after the procedure. Results Although most physical measurements decreased post-operatively, many patients reported increased discomfort. We identified one subgroup particularly prone to report excess skin on the arms post-operatively: women with high discomfort from excess skin on the arms and high body mass index (BMI), pre-operatively. Ptosis of the excess skin seems to be a feasible measurement for predicting post-operative discomfort. For every centimetre of ptosis pre-operatively, patients had 1.37- and 1.31-fold higher odds of achieving a score for post-operative discomfort from excess skin on the upper arms and thighs, respectively, of ≥ 6 (on a 0–10 scale). Conclusions We identified a subgroup especially affected by discomforting excess skin on arms and thighs after weight loss. Furthermore, we suggest a pre-operative pro-operative ptosis measuring to predict post-operative discomfort level. The result of this study further increases the knowledge of excess skin and should be useful in further improving patient education. Level of Evidence: Level III, risk / prognostic study.

Objectives: We aimed to investigate the efficacy of locally delivered apocynin on fat graft survival in an experimental autologous fat grafting (AFG) model created in rats. Methods: Twenty-one Wistar albino male rats were included in this study. The 0.647 g mean weight grafts were harvested from the inguinal region and transferred to the nape of every rat. The subjects were randomly separated into three groups. Saline, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and apocynin, a dose of 20 mg/kg, solutions were applied once a day for 2 weeks. After 3 months, the rats were sacrificed. The evaluation of physical measurements (weight and volume) and survival rates of the grafts for volume (SRV) and weight (SRW), the viable cell count (VC) with the MTT assay, and histopathological parameters were done. Results: All biophysical parameters were found to be significantly higher in the apocynin group compared to other groups (p < .05). In the MTT test, the saline group was normalized to 100%. According to this, DMSO and apocynin groups’ means were 106% and 163%, respectively. The VC was significantly higher in the apocynin group than the other groups (p < .05). The VC was significantly higher in the DMSO group than in the saline group (p < .05). No significant difference was found in other comparisons performed according to biophysical and histopathological parameters (p > .05). Conclusion: The locally delivered apocynin decreases fat graft volume loss in an experimental AFG model. Consequently, apocynin can be used as an effective substance to increase graft survival.

Abstract Tactile sensing has attracted significant attention as a tactile quantitative evaluation method because the tactile sensation is an important factor while evaluating consumer products. While the human tactile perception mechanism has nonlinearity, previous studies have often developed linear regression models. In contrast, this study proposes a nonlinear tactile estimation model that can estimate sensory evaluation scores from physical measurements. We extracted features from the vibration data obtained by a tactile sensor based on the perceptibility of mechanoreceptors. In parallel, a sensory evaluation test was conducted using 10 evaluation words. Then, the relationship between the extracted features and the tactile evaluation results was modeled using linear/nonlinear regressions. The best model was concluded by comparing the mean squared error between the model predictions and the actual values. The result implies that there are multiple evaluation words suitable for adopting nonlinear regression models, and the average error was 43.8% smaller than that of building only linear regression models.

A garment sizing system is essential for effective clothing design and production. A sizing system classifies a specific population into homogeneous subgroups based on some key dimensions. Persons of the same subgroup have the same body shape characteristics, and share the same garment size. Anthropometric data plays important role in creating clothing sizing system. The current work represents the sixth step towards the overall goal of developing the Libyan children’s clothing standards system based on physical measurements of the human body of Libyan schoolchildren. The objective of the current work is to study the physical measurements of students aged 6 to 17 years in the stages of primary, secondary. The body measurements of school children in Benghazi were collected and analyzed using simple statistics methods to understand the body ranges and current of student in all stages to develop the system sizing. The measurements were collected from previous projects. Some measurements were collected to complement a work of 90 (male and female) students between 6, 7 and 8 years old from a school in Benghazi. ANOVA test was used to determine differences between age groups.

Introduction: ECG interpretation plays a vital role in the initial evaluation of patients presenting with cardiac complaints. Assessment of degree of cardiac vector is one of the important parameters to be studied in ECG. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was carried out among 84 female subjects, aged 18- 40 years of age, including students and staff of Gandaki Medical College Teaching hospital and Research Center, Pokhara, Nepal over a period of one month from 1st Oct to 1st Nov 2021. A Standard ECG machine was used and the ECG was recorded using the conventional limb leads. The individual mean electrical axis of the heart was plotted using the net voltage of QRS complex of Lead-I and Lead-III. The possible correlation between cardiac vector and physical measurements like height weight BSA and BMI were analyzed. The data were analyzed in SPSS version 27. Results: The normal mean electrical axis of the healthy female subjects was observed as 61.7±23.51°. There was a significant positive correlation of cardiac vector with height (p< 0.05), whereas a negative correlation was observed with weight and BMI (p< 0.01). However, there was no significant correlation with BSA. In our study, we observed the maximum left axis cardiac vector as -2° and right axis as 98° among 84 female subjects. Conclusion: Documentation of cardiac vector was made using standard bipolar limb leads in normal healthy female subjects.  BMI is involved in the deviation of cardiac vector with a negative correlation. This observation could make it quite attractive for use in clinical practice.

Smartphones are used for many daily activities like tele-communication, gaming, web browsing, fitness and health monitoring and traditional office working. Smartphones are equipped with built-in sensors to be able to perform these activities. It is well known that the sensors affect the resolution of the smartphone applications which is very vital in life critical applications (LCA). In this paper, two main sensors, the gyroscope and accelerometer have been studied. All commercial smartphones contain these two sensors and support functions related to them. These two sensors have direct link with the physical measurements which feed the fitness and health applications. A fitness application has been selected and ran under Android and iOS operating systems in two different popular smartphones: Samsung Note5 and iPhone7s smartphones. Statistical methodology has been applied to analysis the data and evaluate the performance of the sensors. The results show that commercial smartphones are not reliable devices for motion-related measurements and they can only be used for general purpose monitoring but not in life critical applications.

The Taiwan Biobank (TWB) is an ongoing prospective study of over 150,000 individuals aged 30-70 recruited from across Taiwan beginning in 2012. A comprehensive list of phenotypes was collected for each consented participant at recruitment and follow-up visits through structured interviews and physical measurements. Biomarkers and genetic data were also generated for all participants from blood and urine samples. We present here an overview of the genetic data quality, population structure, and familial relationship within TWB, which consists of predominantly Han Chinese-ancestry individuals, and highlight important attributes and genetic findings thus far from the biobank. A linkage to Taiwan's National Health Insurance database of >25 years and other health-related registries is underway that will enrich the phenotypic spectrum of TWB and enable deep and longitudinal genetic investigations. TWB provides one of the largest biobank resources for biomedical and public health research in East Asia that will contribute to our understanding of the genetic basis of human health and disease in global populations through collaborative studies with other biobanks.

Maternal depression affects parenting and children’s early development, but its effect on dietary intake is unknown. While husbands’ involvement in parenting and having friends to talk to may reduce childcare stress, this has not been thoroughly studied. In this study, mothers were stratified by the presence or absence of mood disorders, and the effects of support from their husbands and friends on the dietary intake of their 3-year-old children were examined. This cross-sectional analysis included 920 mother-child pairs examined at the National Center for Child Health and Development in Japan. Dietary intake was assessed using a brief dietary history questionnaire, and physical measurements were taken when the children were 3 years old. The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale was used to screen for maternal mood disorders, 3 years after delivery. The presence or absence of the husband’s assistance with housework and childcare, mental support, and friends was obtained from a self-administered questionnaire when the child was 3 years old. Differences in the children’s physical measurements, energy, and food intake with the presence or absence of support for subjects with or without mood disorders were compared. Mothers with support from husbands or friends had significantly fewer mood disorders. Support from friends and family did not affect the children’s physical development and whether or not mothers had mood disorder symptoms. However, children’s vegetable intake was higher if mothers were supported. Children of mothers with mood disorders had a significantly higher vegetable intake and fruit intake, depending on the support from friends ( P = 0.046 ,   P = 0.037 ); thus, such support may increase children’s vegetable and fruit intake. The results of this study revealed the importance of supportive friends and family regarding childcare.
