The reflex tachycardia elicited by rapid intravenous infusions of a blood substitute was studied in 21 chronic cats with spinal sections at C8. All animals could breath spontaneously. The day after section the average resting heart rate (HR) and arterial pressure (AP) were 109 beats/min and 98/67 mmHg, respectively. Vagal blockade with atropine (0.5-0.7 mg/kg iv) was performed prior to each infusion, increasing the average HR To 127 beats/min. In 39 infusions in 21 cats the average increase in HR was 10 beats/min (range from -6 to +22 beats/min). A tachycardia was observed in all but five trials, four of which were obtained in two cats that subsequently responded with a tachycardia. In seven animals the neural circuit mediating the response was partially or totally interrupted by section of several thoracic dorsal roots (T1-T4 or T1-T6) and of the spinal cord at the inferior level of these sections (between T6 and T7). The tachycardia response was progressively reduced and finally abolished by these procedures. These experiments indicate that spinal neural mechanisms are likely to contribute to the phenomenon first described by Bainbridge.

Abstract. We hypothesized that in healthy subjects differences in resting heart rate variability (rHRV) would be associated with differences in emotional reactivity within the medial visceromotor network (MVN). We also probed whether this MVN-rHRV relationship was diminished in depression. Eleven healthy adults and nine depressed subjects performed the emotional counting stroop task in alternating blocks of emotion and neutral words during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The correlation between rHRV outside the scanner and BOLD signal reactivity (absolute value of change between adjacent blocks in the BOLD signal) was examined in specific MVN regions. Significant negative correlations were observed between rHRV and average BOLD shift magnitude (BSM) in several MVN regions in healthy subjects but not depressed subjects. This preliminary report provides novel evidence relating emotional reactivity in MVN regions to rHRV. It also provides preliminary suggestive evidence that depression may involve reduced interaction between the MVN and cardiac vagal control.

Abstract:Electrical stimulation-induced leg muscle contractions provide a useful model for examining the role of leg muscle neural afferents during low-intensity exercise in persons with spinal cord-injury and their able-bodied cohorts. Eight persons with paraplegia (SCI) and 8 non-disabled subjects (CONTROL) performed passive knee flexion/extension (PAS), electrical stimulation-induced knee flexion/extension (ES) and voluntary knee flexion/extension (VOL) on an isokinetic dynamometer. In CONTROLS, exercise heart rate was significantly increased during ES (94 ± 6 bpm) and VOL (85 ± 4 bpm) over PAS (69 ± 4 bpm), but no changes were observed in SCI individuals. Stroke volume was significantly augmented in SCI during ES (59 ± 5 ml) compared to PAS (46 ± 4 ml). The results of this study suggest that, in able-bodied humans, Group III and IV leg muscle afferents contribute to increased cardiac output during exercise primarily via augmented heart rate. In contrast, SCI achieve raised cardiac output during ES leg exercise via increased venous return in the absence of any change in heart rate.
