This paper describes the design of a nonlinear robust adaptive controller for a flexible hypersonic vehicle model which is nonlinear, multivariable, and unstable, and includes uncertain parameters. Firstly, a control-oriented model is derived for controller design. Then, the model analysis is conducted for this model via input-output (I/O) linearized technique. Secondly, the sliding mode manifold is designed based on the homogeneity theory. Then, the adaptive high order sliding mode controller is designed to achieve the tracking for hypersonic vehicle where the upper bounds of the uncertainties are not known in advance. Furthermore, the stability of the system is proved via the Lyapunov theory. Finally, the Monte-Carlo simulation results on the full-order nonlinear model with aerodynamic uncertainties are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

The sliding mode controller is one of the interesting classical nonlinear controllers in structural vibration control. From its apparition, in the middle of the twentieth century, this controller was a subject of several studies and investigations. This controller was widely used in the control of various semi-active or active devices in the civil engineering area. Nevertheless, the sliding mode controller offered a low sensitivity to the uncertainties or the system condition variations despite the presence of the Chattering defect. However, the adaptation law is one of the frequently used solutions to overcome this phenomenon offering the possibility to adapt the controller parameters according to the system variations and keeping the stability of the whole system assured. The chapter provides a sliding mode controller design reinforced by an adaptive law to control the desired state of an excited system. The performance of the adaptive controller is proved by numerical simulation results of a three-story excited structure.

A multivariable super-twisting sliding mode controller and disturbance observer with gain adaptation, chattering reduction, and finite time convergence are proposed for a generic hypersonic vehicle where the boundary of aerodynamic uncertainties exists but is unknown. Firstly, an input-output linearization model is constructed for the purpose of controller design. Then, the sliding manifold is designed based on the homogeneity theory. Furthermore, an integrated adaptive multivariable super-twisting sliding mode controller and disturbance observer are designed in order to achieve the tracking for step changes in velocity and altitude. Finally, some simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper deals with the design of a novel modified supertwisting fast nonlinear sliding mode controller (MSTFNSMC) to stabilize a quadrotor system under time-varying disturbances. The suggested control strategy is based on a modified supertwisting controller with a fast nonlinear sliding surface to improve the tracking performance. The paper suggests a simple optimization tool built-in MATLAB/Simulink to tune the proposed controller parameters. Fast convergence of state variables is established by using a nonlinear sliding surface for rotational and translational subsystems. The modified supertwisting controller is developed to suppress the effect of chattering, reject disturbances, and ensure robustness against external disturbance effect. The stability of the proposed controller (MSTFNSMC) is proved using the Lyapunov theory. The performance of the proposed MSTFNSMC approach is compared with the supertwisting sliding mode controller (STSMC) by numerical simulations to verify its effectiveness.

This article presents the sliding control method combined with the selfadjusting neural network to compensate for noise to improve the control system's quality for the two-wheel self-balancing robot. Firstly, the dynamic equations of the two-wheel self-balancing robot built by Euler–Lagrange is the basis for offering control laws with a neural network of noise compensation. After disturbance-compensating, the sliding mode controller is applied to control quickly the two-wheel self-balancing robot reached the desired position. The stability of the proposed system is proved based on the Lyapunov theory. Finally, the simulation results will confirm the effectiveness and correctness of the control method suggested by the authors.

This paper investigates the problem of synchronization for two different stochastic chaotic systems with unknown parameters and uncertain terms. The main work of this paper consists of the following aspects. Firstly, based on the Lyapunov theory in stochastic differential equations and the theory of sliding mode control, we propose a simple sliding surface and discuss the occurrence of the sliding motion. Secondly, we design an adaptive sliding mode controller to realize the asymptotical synchronization in mean squares. Thirdly, we design an adaptive sliding mode controller to realize the almost surely synchronization. Finally, the designed adaptive sliding mode controllers are used to achieve synchronization between two pairs of different stochastic chaos systems (Lorenz-Chen and Chen-Lu) in the presence of the uncertainties and unknown parameters. Numerical simulations are given to demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of the proposed robust adaptive sliding mode controller.

This paper presents a robust adaptive controller that does not depend on the system parameters for an excavator arm. Firstly, the model of the excavator arm is demonstrated in the Euler-Lagrange form considering with overall excavator system. Next, a robust adaptive controller has been constructed from information of state error. In this paper, the stability of overall system is mathematically proven by using Lyapunov stability theory. Also, the proposed controller is model free then the closed loop system is not affected by disturbances and uncertainties. Finally, the simulation is executed in Matlab/Simulink for both presented scheme and the PD controller under some conditions to ensure that the proposed algorithm given the good performances for all cases.
