A modified electromagnetic-bandgap (M-EBG) structure and its application to planar monopole ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna are presented. The proposed M-EBG which comprises two strip patch and an edge-located via can perform dual notched bands. By properly designing and placing strip patch near the feedline, the proposed M-EBG not only possesses a simple structure and compact size but also exhibits good band rejection. Moreover, it is easy to tune the dual notched bands by altering the dimensions of the M-EBG. A demonstration antenna with dual band-notched characteristics is designed and fabricated to validate the proposed method. The results show that the proposed antenna can satisfy the requirements of VSWR < 2 over UWB 3.1–10.6 GHz, except for the rejected bands of the world interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) and the wireless local area network (WLAN) at 3.5 GHz and 5.5 GHz, respectively.

AbstractIn this paper, a compact, low-profile, coplanar waveguide-fed metamaterial inspired dual-band microstrip antenna is presented for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) application. To achieve the goal a triangular split ring resonator is used along with an open-ended stub. The proposed antenna has a compact size of 20 × 24 mm2 fabricated on an FR-4 epoxy substrate with dielectric constant (εr) 4.4. The antenna provides two distinct bands I from 2.40 to 2.48 GHz and II from 4.7 to 6.04 GHz with reflection coefficient better than −10 dB, covering the entire WLAN (2.4/5.2/5.8 GHz) band spectrum. The performance of the proposed metamaterial inspired antenna is also studied in terms of the radiation pattern, efficiency, and the realized gain. A comparative study is also presented to show the performance of the proposed metamaterial inspired antenna with respect to other conventional antenna structures in terms of overall size, bandwidth, gain, and reflection coefficient. Finally, the antenna is fabricated and tested. The simulated results show good agreement with the measured results.

A novel reconfigurable filter antenna with three ports for three dependent switchable states for impulse radio-ultrawideband (IR-UWB)/wireless local area network (WLAN)/worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) applications is presented in this paper. Three positive-intrinsic-negative diodes, controlled by direct current, are employed to realize frequency reconfiguration of one ultra-wideband state and two narrowband states (2.4 GHz and 3.5 GHz). The time domain characteristic of the proposed antenna in the ultra-wideband state is studied, because of the features of the IR-UWB system. The time domain analysis shows that the reconfigurable filtering antenna in the wideband state performs similarly to the original UWB antenna. The compact size, low cost, and expanded reconfigurable filtering features make it suitable for IR-UWB systems that are integrated with WLAN/WiMAX communications.

This paper presents the design, testing, and analysis of a clover structured monopole antenna for super wideband applications. The proposed antenna has a wide impedance bandwidth (−10 dB bandwidth) from 1.9 GHz to frequency over 30 GHz. The clover shaped antenna with a compact size of 50 mm × 45 mm is designed and fabricated on an FR4 substrate with a thickness of 1.6 mm. Parametric study has been performed by varying the parameters of the clover to obtain an optimum wide band characteristics. Furthermore, the prototype introduces a method of achieving super wide bandwidth by deploying fusion of elliptical patch geometries (clover shaped) with a semi elliptical ground plane, loaded with a V-cut at the ground. The proposed antenna has a 14 dB bandwidth from 5.9 to 13.1 GHz, which is suitable for ultra wideband (UWB) outdoor propagation. The prototype is experimentally validated for frequencies within and greater than UWB. Transfer function, impulse response, and group delay has been plotted in order to address the time domain characteristics of the proposed antenna with fidelity factor values. The possible applications cover wireless local area network, C-band, Ku-band, K-band operations, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, and Wireless USB.

We present a simple coplanar waveguide- (CPW-) fed rectangular ring monopole antenna designed for dual-band wireless local area network (WLAN) applications. The antenna is based on a simple structure composed of a CPW feed line and a rectangular ring. Dual-band WLAN operation can be achieved by controlling the distance between the rectangular ring and the ground plane of the CPW feed line, as well as the horizontal vertical lengths of the rectangular ring. Simulated and measured data show that the antenna has a compact size of21.4×59.4 mm2, an impedance bandwidths of 2.21–2.70 GHz and 5.04–6.03 GHz, and a reflection coefficient of less than −10 dB. The antenna also exhibits an almost omnidirectional radiation pattern. This simple compact antenna with favorable frequency characteristics therefore is attractive for applications in dual-band WLAN.

In the present study, an ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna has been proposed using coplanar waveguide (CPW) feed with dual-band-notch characteristics. Slot-loaded radiator and U-shaped CPW resonator are used for band rejection at 3.5 and 5–6 GHz respectively to reduce interference with existing World interoperability for microwave access and wireless local area network systems. With an extended operating band (measured at 10 dB return loss) the antenna operates successfully over the entire UWB range (3.1–10.6 GHz) with a form factor of 30 × 20 × 1.524 mm3 on a commercially low-cost FR-4 substrate. Experimental measurement results are presented in support of the simulated results for the proposed antenna for practical application. The antenna has been successfully fabricated and measured, showing broadband matched impedance and good omnidirectional radiation pattern throughout the operating bandwidth. Measured time-domain analysis for both the orientations, i.e. face-to-face and side-by-side, yields excellent performance in the open environment scenario. With fairly good and consistent monopole such as omnidirectional radiation patterns in H-plane and linear transmission responses, the proposed antenna is well suited to be integrated within portable devices.

A  novel  dual-band  electromagnetic  bandgap (EBG)  for  wireless  local  area  network  (WLAN) applications  is  designed  in  this  paper.  The  EBG structure is based  on  hexagonal geometry and does not use  via  or  multilayer.  The  bandgap  characteristics  are investigated  by  determining  the  scatter  parameters.  By adjusting  the  parameters  in  the  dimension  of  the structure, the dual bandgaps can be controlled easily to achieve  the  WLAN  frequencies.  Comparisons  between the proposed structure with another one, which have the same  dielectric  permittivity  and  thickness  of  the dielectric  substrate,  have  been  done.  The  structure  is then  also  optimized  to  obtain  the  high  impedance  in surface  at  the  frequencies  of  the  WLAN  bands,  which are  centered  at  2.45  GHz  and  5.5  GHz.  Simulated  and measured  results  are  shown  to  demonstrate  the performance of the proposed structure.

A compact triple band notched tapered microstrip fed Ultrawideband (UWB) antenna for wireless communication applications in C, X and Ku bands is proposed. The antenna having a compact size of 16×26 mm2, consisting of an elliptical patch and a truncated ground structure to achieve impedance of -10 dB bandwidth of 3.1 GHz to 18.8 GHz. Triple band notched characteristics are obtained from 3.7 GHz to 4.2 GHz for C band, 5.18 GHz to 5.85 GHz for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and 8 GHz to 8.4 GHz for X band applications associated with the satellite communication, fabricating three inverted slots that are U-shaped in the patch of elliptical form. Good agreement between theoretical and the practical results achieved through simulation of the antenna proposed is a compatible candidate for portable ultra-wide band applications.

In this paper, a new way of obtaining a band rejection in a ultra wideband (UWB) filter using a uniplanar Electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure is reported. The EBG structure has a bandgap centered at 6.69 GHz which is almost 38% lower compared with the conventional uniplanar EBG of same dimensions. A one-dimensional EBG structure coupled with a microstrip line provides a narrow bandgap, which is used in obtaining a notch in the UWB filter. Single notch UWB filters with variations in the placement of EBG are fabricated producing a notch centered at 5.19 GHz (wireless local area network (WLAN)). A dual notch (5.16 and 8.24 GHz (satellite communication)) UWB filter is also fabricated with two different unit cell EBGs'. Switchable and tunable notch band UWB filters are proposed.

This paper presents the dual band notch characteristics of Ultra wideband (UWB) monopole antenna. Proposed antenna (30 × 30 mm2) consists of arrow shaped patch and truncated ground plane. Operating range of the proposed antenna (voltage standing wave ratio < 2) is 2.2–11 GHz. In order to achieve dual band stop characteristics, λ/2 open ended angularly separated slit pair has been inserted on the radiator for world interoperability for microwave access (WIMAX) (3.3–3.9 GHz) band rejection performance and wireless local area network (WLAN) (5.1–5.9 GHz) band rejection has been realized by introducing a pair of angularly separated λ/2 conductor backed plane (CBP). Using proper adjustment of angular separation for both slit pair and CBP pair, enhanced band rejection can be achieved for the WIMAX and WLAN band, respectively. The performance of antenna has been investigated in terms of frequency domain and time domain to assess its suitability in UWB communication.

Abstract This communication reports significant isolation improvement utilizing planar suspended line (PSL) technique in ultra wideband (UWB) antenna for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) application. The antenna exhibits dual-band notched characteristic in Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) band covering 5.45–5.85 GHz range; and in 7.15–7.95 GHz range for X-band downlink operations in satellite communication. Band-notching characteristics have been obtained by employing a single Elliptical Split Ring Resonator (ESSR) placed adjacent to each microstrip feed line of the radiating element and duo of “Y”-shaped strips employed within the circular ring of individual radiating elements. Two elements antenna occupy a compact space of 20 × 36 × 1.6 mm3 exhibiting huge measured impedance bandwidth (S11/S22 < −10 dB) covering 3.1–11.5 GHz and significant isolation of >21 dB in the almost entire band of operation. The electrical performance of antennas has been analyzed in terms of various MIMO parameters. Measured results demonstrate good accord with simulated results proving the competency of proposed antenna in high-density package systems and massive MIMO applications.
