Personal rapid transit (PRT) is a public and automated transport system in which a fleet of small driverless vehicles operate in order to transport passengers between a set of stations through a network of guided ways. Each customer is carried from one station to another directly with no stop in intermediate stations. This mode of transport can result in a high level of unused capacity due to the empty moves of the vehicles. In this paper, we model the problem of minimizing the energy consumed by the PRT system while assuming predeterministic list of orders; then we solve it using some constructive heuristics. Experiments are run on 1320 randomly generated test problems with various sizes. Our algorithms are shown to give good results over large trip instances.

Purpose – Hyper-heuristics are a class of high-level search techniques which operate on a search space of heuristics rather than directly on a search space of solutions. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the suitability of using genetic programming as a hyper-heuristic methodology to generate constructive heuristics to solve the multidimensional 0-1 knapsack problem Design/methodology/approach – Early hyper-heuristics focused on selecting and applying a low-level heuristic at each stage of a search. Recent trends in hyper-heuristic research have led to a number of approaches being developed to automatically generate new heuristics from a set of heuristic components. A population of heuristics to rank knapsack items are trained on a subset of test problems and then applied to unseen instances. Findings – The results over a set of standard benchmarks show that genetic programming can be used to generate constructive heuristics which yield human-competitive results. Originality/value – In this work the authors show that genetic programming is suitable as a method to generate reusable constructive heuristics for the multidimensional 0-1 knapsack problem. This is classified as a hyper-heuristic approach as it operates on a search space of heuristics rather than a search space of solutions. To our knowledge, this is the first time in the literature a GP hyper-heuristic has been used to solve the multidimensional 0-1 knapsack problem. The results suggest that using GP to evolve ranking mechanisms merits further future research effort.

The Personal Rapid Transit is a new emergent transportation tool. It relies on using a set of small driverless electric vehicles to transport people on demand. Because of the specific on-demand characteristic of the Personal Rapid Transit system, many Personal Rapid Transit vehicles would move empty which results in a high level of wasted transportation capacity. This is enhanced while using Personal Rapid Transit vehicles with limited electric battery capacity. This paper deals with this problem in a real time context while minimizing the set of empty vehicle movements. First, a mathematical formulation to benchmark waiting time of passengers in Personal Rapid Transit systems is proposed. Then, a simulation model that captures the main features of the Personal Rapid Transit system is developed. A decision support system which integrates several real time solution strategies as well as a simulation module is proposed. Our dispatching strategies are evaluated and compared based on our simulation model. The efficiency of our method is tested through extensive test studies.

In pursuit of this exploration, infrastructure built to cater the existing transportation modes &amp; network should be utilised to provide a sustainable solution. Accordingly, it has been discussed a new ideology of utilizing the emergency walkway of the existing metro rail elevated viaduct for providing services named Emergency Rapid Transit (ERT) and Personal Rapid transit (PRT). This paper describes about the requirements, pros and cons of implementing this ideology.</p>

The increase in air transportation demand implies challenges on airport ground access. Using private transportation mode to reach the airport is a typical practice which results in the vast demand for parking facilities. These facilities are located farther from the terminal, increasing the access time. This research aimed to develop the concept of an advance airport Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) that connects parking facilities to the terminal as a shuttle service, and provides on-board integrated flight-related services, such as check-in and baggage handling. The system architecture and operational models were developed, thus all relevant components and functions were identified, especially focusing on information management tasks. A questionnaire survey was performed and conducted at Budapest Airport to reveal the user expectations towards an advanced PRT service at the airport. Moreover, a layout selection method was developed which was applied to Budapest Airport as a case study. The proposed PRT service provides a seamless transit by access to airport terminals from remote parking facilities conveniently and the time consumption of flight-related activities is significantly reduced too.
