Comparative work of with/without erbium- (Er-) doped vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films were carried out via sol-gel technique by dissolving erbium (III) nitrate pentahydrate (Er(NO3)3·5H2O) in vanadium (V) oxoisopropoxide (OV[OCH(CH3)2]3) and titanium (IV) isopropoxide (Ti[OCH(CH3)2]4). Effect of Er doping was traced by Fourier transform IR (FTIR), thermogravimetric/differential thermal (TG/DTA), and photoluminescence measurements. UV-Vis transmission/absorption measurement indicated a blue shift upon Er doping in V2O5film due to the softening of V=O bond while appearance of typical absorption peaks in Er-doped TiO2film. Granule size of the films increased (reduced) upon Er substitution on host material compared to undoped V2O5and TiO2films, respectively.

Chromium-activated ZnGa2O4 nano-sized phosphor powder was prepared by the Sol-Gel technique using citric acid as chelator, and the microstructure and luminescent property were studied. The host ZnGa2O4 belongs to the spinel structure and the ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ phosphor powder exhibited bright red emission band. The excitation bands with peak of maximum height at about 250 nm, 410 nm and 560 nm were related to the charge transfer (CT) of Ga-O, 4A2-4T1 and 4A2-4T2 transitions of Cr3+, respectively. Different quenching concentrations of the CT state and intrinsic excitation were discovered originating from different energy transfer schemes. Meanwhile, with the increasing of the calcining temperature the PLE spectrum exhibited an obvious blue-shift which is attributed to the enhancement of the crystal field.

Rare earth erbium-doped ZnO samples were synthesized via a facile sol–gel method. The influences of Er-doping on structural properties, morphological features and optical properties were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM and UV–Vis DRS techniques. The results showed that the as-synthesized products were well crystallined in the absence of impurity phases and Er-doping resulted in the reduction of bandgap energy deducted from the UV–Vis DRS results. Amongst the samples, layer-like 0.5% Er-doped ZnO with nest structure achieved the highest photodegradation (90.7%) of methylene blue (MB) after UV light irradiation for 2[Formula: see text]h. The kinetic studies of MB degradation over different Er-doped ZnO were also conducted and proved to obey the pseudo-first-order kinetics.

ZnO:In films with different concentrations (0–5 at.%) are successfully synthesized on quartz substrates using sol-gel technique. The structure, morphology, and optical properties of ZnO:In films are investigated by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and UV-visible spectrophotometer. It is found that all the films with columnar structural morphology grow along the preferred [001] orientation and the incorporation of indium can improve the crystallinity of ZnO films. The transmittance of the films is about 80% in the visible range. A change of the optical absorption edge from blue shift to red shift is observed for ZnO:In films as the doping concentration increases, which means that the optical band gap first increases and then decreases. The blue shift is due to the Burstein-Moss effect. The sharp jump of the absorption edge from blue-shift to red shift is ascribe to the band gap narrowing caused by the merging of the donor and conduction bands of ZnO:In at high doping concentration.

(Bi1-xSmx)(Fe0.95Mn0.05)O3(x=0.00, 0.03 and 0.06) thin films were deposited on the quartz substrates by sol-gel technique. The results of X-ray diffraction patterns indicated all thin films had rhombohedral perovskite structure. Moreover, the Sm and Mn co-doping at A-and B-site of BiFeO3resulted in the structural distortion. Scanning electron microscope measurements exhibited that the uniform surface morphology could be obtained by co-doping and the average grain size of the films decreased with increasing Sm content. Furthermore, the fundamental absorption edges ofxBSFMO films showed a blue shift with the increase of Sm content which can be observed in transmittance spectra. The optical band gap of the thin films forx= 0.00, 0.03 and 0.06 can be expressed by (0.84x+2.62) eV, which is due to the Burstein-Moss effect.

Comparative work of erbium doped vanadium pentoxide and titanium dioxide thin films were carried out via sol gel technique by dissolving erbium (III) nitrate pentahydrate in vanadium (V) oxoisopropoxide and titanium (IV) isopropoxide. Fourier Transform IR and thermogravimetric/differential thermal measurements were performed to find out erbium substitution. UV-Vis. spectroscopy indicated a blue shift upon Er doping in V2O5film due to the softening of V=O bond. The similar behavior was expected in TiO2film and the prediction shall be shown only if annealing of the film above 600°C, resulting oxygen deficiency in anatase TiO2while Ti deficiency in rutile TiO2film. Due to such impact of erbium on structure, granule size of the films, determined by AFM, increased yielding more space for intercalation of ion in host materials and monitored through cyclic voltammetry measurements.
