In this study, articles in English and Chinese were selected from available electronic databases prior to September 2014. The metabolic concentrations and patterns of N-acetylaspartic acid (NAA), Choline (Cho), Creatine (Cr), NAA/Cr, NAA/Cho, and Cho/Cr ratios in radiotherapy-induced radiation encephalopathy by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy were extracted. A meta-analysis was performed to quantitatively synthesize findings of these studies. Weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were calculated using random or fixed effective models. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed using the CochraneQtest andI2statistics. The results indicated that a total of 4 researches involving 214 patients met inclusion criteria. Depending on methodologies of selected studies, control groups were referred to as healthy subjects. The combined analysis revealed that there was no significant difference in value of Cr between radiotherapy group and healthy control group (WMD = −1.483, 95% CI: −67.185–64.219,p=0.965). However, there were significant difference in values of NAA (WMD = −18.227, 95%CI: −36.317–−0.137,p=0.048), Cho (WMD = 38.003, 95%CI: 5.155–70.851,p=0.023), NAA/Cr (WMD = −1.175, 95%CI: −1.563–−0.787,p=0.000), NAA/Cho (WMD = −1.108, 95%CI: −2.003–0.213,p=0.015), and Cho/Cr (WMD = −0.773, 95%CI: 0.239–1.307,p=0.005). In conclusion, MRS can be regarded as an effective and feasible imaging test for radiotherapy-induced radiation encephalopathy in NPC patients.

Preoperative differentiation between dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) and low-grade glioma is often not possible. Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor is a recently described entity of uncertain origin; however, the diagnosis has important clinical implications. Clinical and radiological findings of DNT and low-grade glioma, especially oligodendroglioma, may be similar. Treatment options and prognosis differ significantly between these two lesions; consequently, accurate diagnosis is imperative. The authors describe two individuals who presented simultaneously at their institution: one patient with an oligodendroglioma and a second patient with DNT. The natural history, neurodiagnostic, and pathological features of each are reviewed with special emphasis on the potential utility of magnetic resonance spectroscopy in differentiating these lesions.

Abstract Background: Energetics alteration plays a key role in the process of myocardial injury in chronic hypoxic diseases (CHD). 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) can investigate alterations in cardiac energetics in vivo. This study was aimed to characterize the potential value of 31P MRS in evaluating cardiac energetics alteration of chronic hypoxia rats (CHR).Methods: Twenty-four CHRs were induced by SU5416 combined with hypoxia, and six rats were raised as control group. 31P MRS was performed weekly and the ratio of concentrations of phosphocreatine (PCr) to adenosine triphosphate (ATP) (PCr/ATP) was obtained. The index of cardiac structure and systolic function parameters, including the right ventricular function (RVEF), right ventricular end-diastolic volume index (RVEDVi), right ventricular end-systolic volume index (RVESVi), the left ventricular function parameters were also measured. Results: The declension of resting cardiac PCr/ATP ratio in CHR was observed at the 1st week, compared to control group (2.90±0.35 vs. 3.31±0.45, p =0.045), while the RVEF,RVEDVi and RVESVi decreased at the 2nd week (p<0.05). The PCr/ATP ratio displayed a significant correlation with RVEF(r = 0.605, p = 0.001),RVEDVi and RVESVi (r = -0.661, r = -0.703; p<0.001).Conclusions: 31P MRS can early detect the cardiac energetics alteration in CHR model before the onset of ventricular dysfunction. The decrease of PCr/ATP ratio likely revealed myocardial injury and cardiac dysfunction.
