During the processing of mango, a huge amount of peel is generated, which is environmentally problematic. In the present study, a compressional-puffing process was adopted to pretreat the peels of various mango cultivars, and then the bioactive compounds of mango peels were extracted by water or ethanol. The phenolic compound compositions as well as the free radical-scavenging, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial activities of water extract (WE) and ethanol extract (EE) from nonpuffed (NP) and compressional-puffed (CP) mango peels were further evaluated. It was found that compressional-puffing could increase the yield of extracts obtained from most mango varieties and could augment the polyphenol content of extracts from Jinhwang and Tainoung number 1 (TN1) cultivars. The WE and EE from TN1 exhibited the highest polyphenol content and the greatest free radical-scavenging activities among the mango cultivars tested. Seven phenolic compounds (gallic acid, pyrogallol, chlorogenic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ECG, and CG) were detected in CPWE (compressional-puffed water extract) and CPEE (compressional-puffed ethanol extract) from TN1, and antioxidant stability of both CPWE and CPEE was higher than that of vitamin C. Further biological experiments revealed that CPEE from TN1 possessed the strongest anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities, and thus it is recommended as a multibioactive agent, which may have applications in the food, cosmetic, and nutraceutical industries.

AbstractBackground:Inflammation is involved in various diseases; search for safe treatments is warranted. Anti-inflammatory effects of ethanol extract ofMethods:In the carrageenan model EEMa (125, 250, or 500 mg/kg), indomethacin (5 mg/kg), or vehicle 3 mL/kg was administered orally in rats (Results:EEMa (250, 500 mg/kg) produced significant (p<0.001; p<0.05) inhibition of inflammation when compared with vehicle. Also, EEMa (250, 500, or 1000 μg/mL) significantly stabilized membrane and produced free radical scavenging activities.Conclusions:possesses anti-inflammatory and the anti-oxidant properties that might benefit translational medicine.

Excessive of ultraviolet light causes abnormality of melanin production. Antioxidants and antityrosinase agents are able to reduce hyperpigmentation by interrupting the process of melanin production. The purpose of this study is to examine the antioxidant and antityrosinase activities as well as toxicity of both 80% ethanol and aqueous extracts of Alpinia nigra by DPPH free radical scavenging assay, mushroom tyrosinase assay and brine shrimp lethality bioassay. Alpinia nigra extracts showed positive result on antioxidant and antityrosinase activities. We found that extract of A. nigra’s leaf has the most effective activity of antioxidant and antityrosinase among other parts of this plant. The ethanol and aqueous extracts from the leaf of A. nigra at the concentration of 125 μg/mL showed % inhibition for free radical scavenging as 94.97% and 93.35%, respectively. The IC50 values of antioxidant were 39.83±16.21 and 46.33±15.22 μg/mL, respectively. In addition, ethanol extract of the leaf from A. nigra at the concentration of 1,000 μg/mL produced 92.61% inhibition of mushroom tyrosinase activity, whereas aqueous extract of A. nigra’s leaf at the same concentration produced 74.47% inhibition. The IC50 of antityrosinase activities were 142.81±13.32 and 406.88±66.43 μg/mL for ethanol and aqueous extracts, respectively. Moreover, the brine shrimp lethality bioassay showed that all extracts were non-toxic (LC50 >1,000 μg/mL). In conclusion, the ethanol extract of A. nigra’s leaf may be beneficial and provide the novel and safe source for antioxidant and whitening agent.

Orthosiphon stamineus (OS), Benth. (Lamiaceae) is widely used in Malaysia for treatments of various kidney and liver ailments. In the experiment, DPPH• radicals scavenging, Fe 3+-induced lipid peroxidation inhibiting activities and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) of methanol/water extract of Orthosiphon stamineus (SEOS) were determined. The results indicated that SEOS exhibited antioxidant, lipid peroxidation inhibition and free radical scavenging activities. The hepatoprotective activity of the SEOS was studied using CCl 4-induced liver toxicity in rats. The activity was assessed by monitoring liver function tests through the measurement of alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST). Furthermore, hepatic tissues were also subjected to histopathological studies. Pretreatment of SEOS (125, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg p.o.) dose-dependently reduced the necrotic changes in rat liver and inhibited the increase of serum ALT and AST activities. The results of the present study indicated that the hepatoprotective effect of Orthosiphon stamineus might be ascribable to its antioxidant and free radical scavenging property.

Abstract We evaluated free radical scavenging activity of the water, methanol and chloroform ex­tracts of propolis in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical and xanthine-xanthine oxidase (XOD) generated superoxide anion assay systems. The free radical scavenging activity guided fractionation and chemical analysis led to the isolation of a new compound, propol {3-[4-hydroxy-3-(3-oxo-but-1-enyl)-phenyl]-acrylic acid) from the water extract, which was more potent than most common antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E (α-tocopherol) in these assay systems.
