The special topic of this paper is to build a nonlinear measuring model between PPP project risk and multiple variables and test it through case analysis. Nonlinear regression method was used in this research to study the risk mutation of public-private partnership (PPP) projects without any significant events. Risk evolution is influenced by three factors which include (1) macroscopic environment, (2) micro environment, and (3) subject’s capacity and their cooperative relationship. First, it reveals three main drive variables of project risk evolution through case analysis. Second, it builds a nonlinear time-varying measurement model which is then transformed to a classical regression model. Lastly, it estimates and tests the model parameter by an example. The study shows that there is an integral negative correlation among the three independent variables within a certain threshold range, revealing macro environment as the most significant factor of project risk. Analyzing the complex relationship between multiple impact variables and risk evolution of PPP projects can provide a basic tool for forecasting and control of risk.

Ethiopia has undertaken important political reforms after the fall of authoritarianism in 2018. This article examines the performance of Ethiopia’s constitutional review mechanism amid the ongoing political and institutional reforms in the country. The study focuses on the process and merit of the constitutional ruling to delay the 2020 national and regional elections because of the coronavirus pandemic, thereby extending the government’s tenure. It further unravels the challenges posed by nondemocratic institutions of the past regime in navigating the transition. In doing so, this study draws on legal, documentary and case analysis, and a literature review. While the mandate extension comes as no surprise, the reasoning of the decision to do so was disappointing for many, dashing the hope and sense of a constitutional moment that accompanied the highly publicised constitutional hearing process in June 2020. The judgment reveals an endemic deficiency of the institutional system. Thus, it is imperative for Ethiopia to establish an independent constitutional umpire to check and control the exercise of government power and support the transition to multiparty democratic governance in the country.

Converging infrastructures illustrate the complexity of the processes involved in both operational sector coupling and socio-technical sector integration. What consequences of this development can technology impact research estimate today and what difficulties will arise in doing so? This article introduces the TATuP special topic as well as the individual contributions and also addresses socio-political aspects, beyond the usual questions of technical feasibility and efficiency: What strategies are developed to initiate and control comprehensive change? What are the mechanisms to maintain the ability to act despite great uncertainties for all those concerned with future converging infrastructures for energy, transport, and heating/cooling. The interdisciplinary approach to the topic focuses on three central “socio-technical problems” and gives a first insight into the conditions under which converging infrastructures emerge and what consequences these processes might have.

Risk monitoring and control is often poorly implemented in construction projects because of a failure to monitor and manage identified risks. Construction companies experience significant losses due to project managers' lack of project risk monitoring and control in construction projects. Most studies have concentrated on risk identification, risk assessment, and risk analysis processes while neglecting crucial risk management processes of risk control, risk monitoring, and risk response. The lack of research on these three crucial processes highlights a gap in the literature concerning how these processes can increase the delivery of successful projects. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the utilization of project risk monitoring and control practices was related to project success in construction projects in the United States. An electronic survey instrument was used to collect data from a sample of 50 construction project managers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in the state of Texas, in the United States. Spearman rho correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between project risk monitoring and control practices and project success. The results of this study indicated that all project risk monitoring and control practices, including risk reassessment, risk audits, contingency reserves analysis, and risk status meetings, were significantly and positively related to project success in construction projects. One of the recommendations presented in this study was that future research should conduct the same study in developing countries to see if the study’s findings remain the same and generalizable. The study concluded that construction organizations should regularly consider the importance and usage of project risk monitoring and control practices and apply them to improve the success rate of a project.

This chapter examines a practical methodology for the assessment and control of market and liquidity risk exposures for financial trading portfolios that consist of certain equity assets. The applied technique is based on the contemporary concept of liquidity-adjusted value at risk (LVaR) along with the application of optimization risk-engine algorithms. This chapter proposes a broad market and liquidity risk management model that can concurrently perform LVaR estimation under regular and stressed market scenarios. It takes into account the effects of illiquidity of traded equity assets. In order to demonstrate the appropriate application of LVaR and stress-testing techniques, real-world case analysis of trading risk management are presented for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) stock markets. To this end, a number of optimization case studies are examined with the aim of developing a novel technique of trading risk measurement as well as the implementation of a risk optimization process for the computation of the maximum permitted LVaR limits.

An optimal locus concept is introduced as the basis for an optimization methodology for real-time control subject to time-varying constraints. The optimal locus in the control plane contains all possible optimum points, and the actual point is found at the intersection of the optimal locus with the most limiting constraint. The mathematical basis of the approach is a given set of equations which is less than the number of unknowns, and the addition of real-time measurements to compensate for the missing information. The control system generates the optimal parameters in real time, and uses them as references to the control loops. The optimization methodology and control architecture are structures in a generalized way for application to processes having multiple variables and subject to several constraints. The proposed controller architecture can effectively control many machining processes. The optimal locus approach was applied to a grinding system and the experimental results verify the proposed theory.

Background. There are documented associations between elevated maternal corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) levels and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, reports of these findings often lack sufficient detail and rationale regarding the bioassay methodology. This shortcoming can be problematic for researchers who do not possess in-depth laboratory sciences knowledge but who want to include bioassays in their investigations or to evaluate published reports. The quality and reliability of CRH measurement results can be significantly affected by variables encountered during sample collection, processing, storage, and bioassay. Thus, it is important to establish research laboratory protocols that are based on well-informed rationales and to carefully consider and control for relevant variables. Approach. A synthesis of laboratory sciences literature regarding variables affecting CRH measurement in pregnancy is presented. Additionally, consultation with experienced researchers provided an in-depth understanding of CRH measurement. From these sources, a laboratory protocol for clinical research was developed. Results. Multiple variables that are specific to the reliability of CRH measurement in pregnancy have been identified. These include sample collection methods, sample processing, sample integrity, sample storage, and the actual assay selected. Conclusion. The reliability of CRH measurements can be significantly improved by identifying and controlling for variables encountered during sample collection, processing, storage, and bioassay. Adequate methodological details are difficult to glean solely from the published literature, thus consultation with well-informed researchers is necessary. A protocol for CRH bioassay in clinical research is proposed.
