The pyridinedicarboxylate-Tb(III) complexes, TbPDC and Tb(PDC)3, as luminescent probes for ATP monitoring have been conveniently prepared and characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, ESI-MS, UV-Vis, excitation, and emission spectroscopy. Interestingly, these two Tb(III) complexes were quenched by ATP by a similar mechanism via π-π stacking interaction between the chelating ligand and adenine moiety. The ability of luminescent probes applied for the determination of ATP in aqueous solution has been investigated. The dynamic ranges for the quantification of ATP are within 10−90 μM and 10−100 μM with detection limits of 7.62 and 11.20 μM for TbPDC and Tb(PDC)3, respectively. The results demonstrated that these luminescent probes would be a potential candidate assay for ATP monitoring in hygiene assessment.

Laser-enhanced ionization (LEI) spectrometry using a water-cooled electrode immersed directly in a nitrous oxide-acetylene flame has been examined for the determination of refractory elements. LEI detection limits for refractory elements in aqueous solution are comparable to or better than detection limits obtained by flame atomic absorption, plasma emission, and atomic fluorescence techniques. Only graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry exhibits superior detectability for certain refractory elements in aqueous solution over LEI spectrometry using a nitrous oxide-acetylene flame. The successful application of the nitrous oxide-acetylene flame now extends the applicability of LEI spectrometry to include most of the elements in the periodic table which can be determined by other common atomic spectrochemical techniques.

The azo reagent 3- (4-N-Pyridine -2-yl benzene sulfonamide azo)-1-nitroso naphthol was synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR and 13CNMR spectral techniques. The solvatochromism of the azo compound was studied by using different solvents. Spectrophotometric determination of cobalt (II) is based on the formation of a 2:1 complex with above reagent. The complex has λmax at (452) nm and Ԑmax of (2. 0567*104) L. mol-1. cm-1.A linear correlation (0.1- 3.5μg. ml-1) was found between absorbance at λmax and concentration. The effect of diverse ions on the determination of cobalt (II) to investigate the selectivity of the method were also studied. The stability constant of the product was (2. 68*108). The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of honey sample.
