A car-sharing system has been playing an important role as an alternative transport mode in order to avoid traffic congestion and pollution due to a quick growth of usage of private cars. In this paper, we propose a novel vehicle relocation system with a major improvement in threefolds: (i) data preprocessing, (ii) demand forecasting, and (iii) relocation optimization. The data preprocessing is presented in order to automatically remove fake demands caused by search failures and application errors. Then, the real demand is forecasted using a deep learning approach, Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit. Finally, the Minimum Cost Maximum Flow algorithm is deployed to maximize forecasted demands, while minimizing the amount of relocations. Furthermore, the system is deployed in the real use case, entitled “CU Toyota Ha:mo,” which is a car-sharing system in Chulalongkorn University. It is based on a web application along with rule-based notification via Line. The experiment was conducted based on the real vehicle usage data in 2019. By comparing in real environment in November of 2019, the results show that our model even outperforms the manual relocation by experienced staff. It achieved a 3% opportunity loss reduction and 3% less relocation trips, reducing human effort by 17 man-hours/week.

Algorithms for network flow problems, such as maximum flow, minimum cost flow, and multi-commodity flow problems, are continuously developed and improved, and so, random network generators become indispensable to simulate the functionality and to test the correctness and the execution speed of these algorithms. For this purpose, in this paper, the well-known Erdős–Rényi model is adapted to generate random flow (transportation) networks. The developed algorithm is fast and based on the natural property of the flow that can be decomposed into directed elementary s-t paths and cycles. So, the proposed algorithm can be used to quickly build a vast number of networks as well as large-scale networks especially designed for s-t flows.

Connected automated vehicle (CAV) technology is the core for the new age vehicles in research phase to communicate with one another and assimilation of vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) for the transference of data between vehicles at a quantified place and time. This manuscript is an enactment of the algorithms associated to the maintenance of secure distance amongst vehicles, lane shifting, and overtaking, which will diminish the occurrence of collisions and congestions especially phantom jams. Those implementations are centered over CAV and VANET technology for the interconnection of the vehicles and the data transmission. The data is associated to the aspects of a vehicle such as speed, position, acceleration, and acknowledgements, which acts as the fundamentals for the computation of variables. In accordance with the environment of a particular vehicle (i.e., its surrounding vehicles), real-time decisions are taken based on the real-time computation of the variables in a discrete system.

Solid waste receiving facilities such as recycling centres, transfer stations, incinerators, and landfills may experience significant traffic congestion and waste storage buildup problems due to the random arrival patterns of waste delivery vehicles. The provision of an increased number of service channels and increased waste storage area will reduce the congestion and buildup problems and the associated costs, but will also incur increased capital and operating costs. A simulation modelling approach for evaluating system performance is described in this paper, and the modelling approach is applied to representative Canadian waste receiving facilities. A minimum cost approach is implemented to determine the preferred number of service channels for one application example. The sizing methodology developed should be useful to waste management engineers and planners for both the design of planned solid waste receiving facilities and the operational analysis of existing facilities for a range of projected conditions. An accurate demand forecasting is essential for planning the electric dispatch in power system, contributing financially to electricity companies and helping in the security and continuity of electricity supply. In addition, it is evident that the distributed energy resource integration in the electric power system has been increasing recently, mostly from the photovoltaic generation, resulting in a gradual change of the load curve profile. Therefore, the 24 hours ahead prediction of the electrical demand of Campina Grande, Brazil, was realized from artificial neural network with a focus on the data preprocessing. Thus, the time series variations, such as hourly, diary and seasonal, were reduced in order to obtain a better demand prediction. Finally, it was compared the results between the forecasting with the preprocessing application and the prediction without the  preprocessing stage. Based on the results, the first methodology presented lower mean absolute percentage error with 7.95% against 10.33% of the second one.

Rapid growth of sharing economy in the last two decades is the outcome of a paradigm shift in global capitalism and societal values. Based on digital identity and the Trust and Reputation Index, IT platforms have brought together strangers who under new social construct, share under-utilized capacities and assets with those who need them. Radius of trust which was initially confined to family and friends; now encompasses strangers who speak no common language and who live oceans apart. Hungary is no exception to this global shift. Sharing economy in Hungary has registered healthy growth specially in the areas of transportation and accommodation. Oszkár, a long-distance car-sharing company presents a good example of this paradigm shift in societal values and sharing with strangers. This platform has recorded impressive growth of over 67% between 2015-2018 with very positive customer reviews. Moreover, this represents an environmentally-friendly sustainable practice which successfully reduces carbon foot-print and traffic congestion.

Cloud storage systems can be considered to be a network of distributed datacenters that typically use cloud computing technology like virtualization and offer some kind of interface for storing data. To increase the availability of the data, it may be redundantly stored at different locations. Basic cloud storage is generally not designed to be accessed directly by users but rather incorporated into custom software using API. Cloud computing involves other processes besides storage. In this chapter, the authors discuss different viewpoints for cloud computing from the user, legal, security, and service provider perspectives. From the user viewpoint, the stored data creates a mirror of currently available local data. The backup feature allows users to recover any version of a previously stored data. Synchronization is the process of establishing consistency among the stored data. From the legal viewpoint, provisions regulating the user processing and storage of the data must have to be constant from when the data is stored in the cloud. The security viewpoint requires interaction with the Web application, data storage, and transmission. The service provider viewpoint requires the maximum level of cloud storage service at the minimum cost.
